Playing With Fire

The quiet was beginning to make my mind go mad. I sat in the cold leather chair of my doctor’s office and crossed my legs to become more comfortable. It made me slightly sad that Brian couldn’t be here today, management forced the band into a last minute recording session. Val had wanted to come with today, but I refused because River was sick and he didn’t need to be with a babysitter when his mom could stay home with him. So now I am sitting on the cold leather chair, bored out of my mind, waiting for the nurse to call me back.

Over the last few days, Baby Haner had been kicking me quite obnoxiously and wouldn’t quit until late at night. Brian found it funny that I was in so much discomfort, that is until I smacked him in the arm for laughing and he shut up.

“Everleigh Glosen.” I heard my name and turned my head to see a nurse standing in the doorway. Slowly, I got up and walked over to her. She lead me to a scale, I hate this part of my doctors appointments. I stood on the scale and waited a second before looking down. One-Hundred Forty-Five pounds. Ouch. We walked into the small ultrasound room and I got situated on the table. The nurse wrapped the blood pressure cuff around my arm and we waited.

“Your blood pressure is a little high. Watch what you are doing.” She said kindly and then she lifted my shirt to above my stomach, my ever growing stomach, and squirted the wonderfully cold blue gel onto my stomach, that always made me wince. She placed the wand onto my stomach and began the ultrasound.

“Everything is looking to be fine. It’s face is facing us, have a look.” She turned the screen to me and I saw the baby’s face. It was small and I could see Brian’s nose. A tear came to my eye and I wiped it quickly before looking back at the screen.

“All of the levels are right where they are supposed to be and it is healthy. Would you like to know the sex?” She asked and I thought for a second. Brian really wanted to be here for that, but he was called to a last minute session and I couldn’t reschedule the appointment. I looked at the nurse and nodded.

“Yeah.” I spoke and she moved the wand slightly and pointed to the screen.

“This little one is a little girl.” She smirked and a round of tears pooled in my eyes. The nurse removed the wand and handed me a tissue to wipe off my stomach and I sat up and lowered my shirt. Oh my gosh, I’m having a girl. I walked out of the room and stopped at the desk to schedule another appointment. Once that was scheduled, I walked out of the building and got into my car and sat there for a second. I put the key into the ignition and took out my phone and immediately dialed Brian’s number. As I pulled out of my spot Brian answered.

“Hello Ever.” He was laughing.

“Hey Brian. So I just got done with my appointment.” I told him and he stopped laughing and I heard him walk somewhere.

“Did you find out?” He asked.

“Yes, promise not to tell anyone until out party thing tomorrow?” I asked.

“I promise.”

“Ok, it’s a girl.”

“Really?” He seemed really surprised and happy.

“Really. Everything is all good with her.” I was smiling like an idiot.

“Wow, we’re having a daughter.” He seemed to mutter to himself.

“Ok, well I am driving and you are supposed to be recording things, so I will see you later. I’m gonna go tell Val.” I said and he made a noise.

“What about not telling anyone?” He asked.

“Babe, it’s Val. I can’t keep it from her. You can tell Matt if you want.” I told him and he remained quiet.

“Fine. Go have fun.” He said and then hung up. I set my phone next to me and focused on driving. I’m just excited about this. Tomorrow is the Gender Reveal Party, and then my sister is doing a baby shower for me in a month.

I pulled into Matt and Val’s driveway and shut off the car and began to get my things together. Once I had my phone in hand and my ultrasounds in my purse, I climbed out of the car, my protruding belly getting partially in the way. As soon as I got to the door, I smacked the door a few times and waited. A few short seconds later, the door opened and Val stood there with River.

“Hey, come on in. I’m just getting River’s lunch together.” She began walking into the house and turned towards the kitchen. I rested my hand on my stomach and followed her into the kitchen.

“So me and Brian have decided that we are going to tell one person about what we are having and then the rest of the people can know tomorrow.” I smiled and Val stopped what she was doing and turned to me.

“Am I the one you are going to tell?” She asked.

“You and Matt.” I said and she got this big grin on her face as she turned to put the sandwich together and cut it up for River.

“Here ya go buddy.” She handed River his sandwich and sat down next to me. “So, what are you having?” She asked.

“I am having a girl.” I smiled and she just about jumped out of her seat. Her eyes got wide and her mouth dropped to the ground.

“Oh my god!! Congratulations!” She yelled and hugged me. I wrapped my arms around her and then felt a small flutter in my stomach.

“Did she just kick?” Val asked, amazement in her eyes.

“Yeah.” I smiled and she knelt down and put her face near my stomach and began muttering to it.

“Ok, that’s weird.” I pushed her away and she smiled.

“Maybe you should watch River for a few days, get used to having a child to watch over.” She suggested and I looked at her.

“I’ve got enough practice from Brian.” I told her and she laughed. Inside of me, I felt the familiar pang of excitement I get when something good happens to me.

So, I know what you're thinking; 'Finally she gives us a new chapter!' I am sorry for the long ass wait for an update. Lots of shit happened to me in the last few months and I kinda got a serious case of writer's block on this story, but I promise to write more!!!
