Goodbye

Kimmie followed Officer Baker out of the station, and to his squad car. She walked up to the back driver side, and opened the door. She was about to climb in when she caught sight of the smirking cop on the other side of the car. "You can ride up front," Zack said, opening the passenger side door, "Those don't open from the inside." he pointed slightly over the roof at the backdoor she was holding open. "Oh." Kimmie said, stepping back, and closing the door. It wasn't like she's spent a lot of time in cop cars. Today was actually the first time. They rode in the back on the way here, and she just thought he opened the door for them cause he was polite, not cause he had to.

Kimmie walked around the back of the car, and climbed in the passenger. She smiled a little when he closed the door behind her, and jogged around to his side. It was nice to know he was still polite. Zacky opened his door, starting the car when he got in. "You can roll your window down too." he told her as he rolled down his own. Kimmie rolled her window down as Officer Baker pulled out of the station. The ride started out quiet except for the random voices coming through the police radio. "Do you have to listen to that all day?" Kimmie asked curiously. That would drive her crazy having to sit there, and listen to nothing but random voices and static all day.

Zacky chuckled a little. "We're suppose to, but sometimes I turn it down, so I can just barely hear it, and listen to my music." he told, and she grinned a little at his smile. "But no one can know about that, so....shh." he added putting his finger up to his lips, and earning a small giggle. "Your secret's safe with me." Kimmie smiled, enjoying the distracting conversation while it lasted. It wouldn't be long before they would be pulling into Tammy's driveway. She was a little surprised she didn't have to give him directions, but then again he is a cop. He was probably use to finding places on addresses alone. More than likely he knew this town like the back of his hand.

Kimmie felt her heart pick up when they pulled into the drive. There wasn't another car here, and she really hoped they didn't miss her. Maybe just not here yet. "Don't worry," Zack said sensing her slight panic, "The officer-" he started only to be cut off by the radio, "92 to 81, come in 81." a woman's voice floated through. Zacky let out a small chuckle, "Is radioing me now," he altered his sentence, "They're probably leaving the hospital." he told her, and Kimmie relaxed a little. "I'm going to wait outside." she said as he reached for the receiver for his radio.

Officer Baker gave her a nod, and Kimmie climbed out of the car. She really didn't feel like sitting there listening to him talk on the radio. She walked up to the door, and debated on if she should go inside. She had her key in her pocket, but maybe it was better to just wait for Officer Baker on the front steps. He probably had to search the place, and she didn't want to touch anything. Kimmie plopped down on the concrete steps, and rested her chin in her hands. Dread started to set with at the anticipation of Tammy's arrival. Kimmie always thought she could let her go as long as she knew she would be safe, but now that it was happening, she wasn't so sure.

A shadow formed over her, and Kimmie looked up in time to see Officer Baker sit down next to her. "They'll be here in a few minutes." he told, and she nodded slightly. Zacky felt his heart break a little when sadness washed over her face, and he rested an arm across her shoulders. "I'm sorry you're loosing your friend," he said pulling her into his side a little, and she rested her head on his shoulder, "After everything you guys told me, I wish I could stop it somehow, but I can't. Sometimes I really hate the system." he said the last part at a mumble. Kimmie let out a heavy sigh, "Me too." she whispered.

Zacky gave her a comforting squeeze, "Just try not to give up. Something tells me she's going to make her way back to you," he told her, and Kimmie looked up at him a little confused, "Just something she said about leaving you alone. She couldn't come back to you if she didn't know where you were." Kimmie forced out a small smile, but it was really doing nothing to restore the hope. She couldn't help but always go to the worst possible outcome. She learned along time ago, not to get her hopes up. Can't be disappointed in the end.

The sound of a car pulling in caused both of their heads to snap to the driveway. Kimmie jumped up, almost knocking Officer Baker over. Tammy didn't even wait for the car to come to a complete stop before she had the door open, and a foot on the ground. The two girls made a dead run for each other, colliding in a tight embrace on the walk way. Eyes squeezed shut, they tried to keep the tears from falling, but there was no stopping them from forcing their way out. "I miss you already." Tammy whispered causing Kimmie to let out the sob she was trying so hard to keep in as she squeezed her tighter.

Zack got up from the steps, and walked over to the girls, reaching them just as Ms. Avery did. His officer he sent back to the station to get the injury report ready and waiting for him. Their eyes met briefly, and he noticed the sadness in her face. She didn't look like the same callous woman he met at the station. "Tammy," Ms. Avery said softly as she placed a hand on her shoulder, "We should go inside." she told her when the girl looked up at her.

Tammy nodded, and wiped her eyes as she pulled apart from Kimmie. They're sad eyes locked as well as their hands before the started to walk up to the door. "Shit." Tammy let out when she realized she had nothing on her. "What?" Kimmie asked with a knowing look. "My keys are in my bag, in my car." she said, narrowing her eyes at her friends 'I told you so' look. "Which is at the impound lot, waiting to be searched." Officer Baker's mumble cut it. "Keep it." Tammy said already holding her hand out for Kimmie's key. She always kept hers in her pocket, so they were always on her. Tammy is always loosing hers because instead of just picking them up and putting them in her pocket, she carries them around while she looks for her bag, and ends up setting them somewhere, and forgetting. Kimmie was sure she would loose her head if it wasn't attached.

Tammy snatched the key out of her smirking friends hand only to feel a tap on her shoulder right after. She looked back at Officer Baker with his own smirk, holding out his hand. He was going to have to take them anyway. "Thank you." he said when she set them in his hand with a slight frown. She was kind of hoping Kimmie was going to get to keep it. Just in case she needed to come over for whatever. No one would be here, but she could get away if she needed.

Zack unlocked the door, and held it open for the women, closing it once everyone was inside. Tammy disabled the alarm, and paused for a moment. A small peaceful smile came out as she took the place. She was never going to have to step foot in here again. She lead them upstairs to her room, and opened the door. Tammy let out a sigh, and turned to face the cop and the social worker as she laced her fingers with Kimmie once again. "Can we have a minute?" she asked Ms. Avery, whom she has been very calm and cooperative with so far. "We really don't have time. We have to get on the road if we're going to make it back in time for dinner." she said, and Tammy took a deep breath. "Please just give us a minute." she tried to remain calm, but the was more demand in her voice. "I'm sorry, but-"

"I SAID GET OUT!" Ms. Avery started back a little with wide eyes at the sudden outburst. She felt a gentle hand grip her arm, and she tore her eyes away from the fuming girl. Zacky motioned with his head towards the door when she looked back at him. Everything in his face said she didn't want to be on the other side of this anger. Ms. Avery hesitated before letting Lt. Baker lead her out of the room, turning around just in time to have the door slammed in her face.

Tammy locked the door, and turned to Kimmie. "I have a plan." she said getting a confused look. She really hoped she wasn't thinking about running away now. Tammy hurried over to the closet, and threw the door open, "Grab any clothes you want to keep." she said as she walked into the back. Kimmie followed her in, but didn't even look at her clothes hanging there. She was to busy watching what her friend was doing. Tammy crouched down, and pulled up the floor boards that hid their future, and something else Kimmie didn't know was in there. She stood up, and turned holding the box and a duffel bag.

Kimmie followed her back out into the bedroom, and watched her dump the contents of the duffel bag out. There wasn't much. A phone, some prepaid cards, and a book that looked like a diary. "What are you doing?" she asked when Tammy started dumping the box of money and their notebooks into the bag. "You're going to take this, and you're going to get out of your mom's house," she started to explain as she grabbed the phone, and the cards off the bed.

"There is enough here for you to support yourself while you finish school," There was enough for Kimmie to support herself for two years if she lived cheap. Which Tammy knew she would. She just wasn't going to be gone for that long. "All of Nathan's stuff is going to get seized, so I got you a phone and some extra minutes. I already activated it, and I have the number. I'll try to call as often as I can. I'm going to come back to you. I promise," Tammy said, pausing to give Kimmie another tight hug, "I'll only be gone for a little while." she whispered. Kimmie let out a sad sigh, not wanting to let go. It was still too long. Tammy pulled away slightly, and tried to give her a reassuring smile. "We can still do this. It's not over yet." she said.

Kimmie gave her a nod, and tried to hold on to hope, but it was hard. Tammy gave her one more hug before turning to her nightstand, and opened a drawer. "Is this yours?" Kimmie asked picking up the diary off the bed. "No," Tammy said, turning to face her, "It's my mom's. I have to give it to Officer Baker." Kimmie looked at her confused again, "Why?" she asked watching her face sadden. "Because she talks about him in it. She knew, Kimmie. She was going to leave him," Tammy told her, pausing to take a breath to calm her racing heart before she continued, "I think he killed her," she said, watching Kimmie's eyes go wide, "I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I didn't want you to worry about me more then you did." Tammy tried to explain, not wanting her to be mad at her fore keeping this from her.

Much to her surprise Kimmie shook her head letting out a small chuckle. "What?" Tammy asked a little confused as to what was so funny. "Nothing. It's just I thought the same thing, and didn't want to tell you," she said, and Tammy understood, letting her own sad smile come out, "I didn't want to upset you like that. I knew you would blame yourself if you believed it." Tammy shook her head at the friend that knew her to well. "I promise, I'm coming back." Kimmie nodded again, but this time she could see some brightness on their future. They would only be apart for a little while. She could be strong. She could make it on her own.

Tammy smiled again, and took her mother's diary from Kimmie just to replace it with hers. She didn't use to keep a diary, but after she found her moms and read it, she got an idea. "Don't loose that." she said when Kimmie took it from her.

"Are you sure I'll need it? He's going to jail."

"I know, but that doesn't mean he can't get out on bail. I don't know if they can protect me if he decides to come after me. You remember what I told you?"

"Every seventh and thirty-second word." Kimmie whispered. "Every seventh, and thirty-second word," Tammy confirmed just before Kimmie tossed it in the bag, "Grab some clothes in case Officer Baker wants to search the bag," she said letting another smile come out, "Throw some underwear in there too, maybe he won't want to." she added getting a giggle out of Kimmie as she headed back to the closet.

Tammy took the time to pack her own bag with a weeks worth of clothes, and the only two other things she needed, a small photo album and her PSP. She had to keep herself entertained somehow while she avoided foster care. If she could stay in L.A. it would be a lot easier to get back. She could call Kimmie, and have her book a bus ticket for her, and be home in no time. The girls grabbed their separate bags, and hands before heading for the door. They couldn't keep their hearts from racing as they left the room. Things could still go wrong.

Tammy opened the door to see a slightly irritated social worker standing there with her arms crossed. "Sorry for slamming the door in your face." she said, not really sorry as she walked around her to Officer Baker, leaned against the wall. She asked nicely....twice. Zacky pushed himself off the wall when Tammy came up to him holding a book, "Here's her diary." she said as he took it from her with a nod. "Are we finished here?" Ms. Avery's still annoyed sounded behind her. Zack held up a finger and looked at Kimmie. He motioned her over with that finger, and looked down at the bag she was holding. "What's in here?" he asked when she joined them. "Just some clothes of mine." she said opening it so he could peek inside.

Zack started to move the clothes around wanting to make sure there wasn't anything they were trying to sneak out. "Um, there's some lady things the further down you go." Kimmie warned him, both girls chuckling when he yanked his hand out. "We're good here." he said quickly, turning away, and heading for the stairs. He didn't need to see some seventeen year old girl's underthingies. The girls shared another giggle as they followed him. Even Ms. Avery was having a hard time holding back a smile at the cops red face.

The girls reached the bottom of the stairs, grinning a little wider at Officer Baker already standing at the door, holding it open. Zacky shut the door once everyone was out, and locked it behind them. He stuck the key in his pocket, and jogged to catch up with the women headed to the cars. Tammy stopped once they reached the car, and turned to Kimmie, "I love you," she said as she pulled her in for one last hug, "Stay strong. We can still do this." she whispered, feeling her squeeze a little tighter. "I will. I love you too." Kimmie whispered back, feeling a tight squeeze of her own.

The girls pulled apart, not being able to hide the fear and sadness in their eyes. Things could still go wrong. "Goodbye." Tammy said softly. "Goodbye." Kimmie replied, her voice cracking. She watched her friend climb into the back of the car, and their sad gazes connected once again. Ms. Avery got in the driver seat, and Kimmie watched with tears in her eyes as she drove off with her only friend. A heavy sigh escaped her lips when she felt Officer Baker's arm across her shoulders once again. She looked up at him, and could see the sympathetic sadness in his eyes. "Come on. Lets get you home."

Notes

I hate goodbyes :(
Hopefully they won't be apart for too long....

Keep the awesome comments coming guys. I know I can be late to reply, but hey better late than never :D

Comments

@Kimmie
This totally made up for the wait :)

First Brian. He's just not use to having to hide something like this like Tammy has. She's had her crush for awhile and is use to hiding secrets and actions. Some of what he does is completely innocent, just trying to make her feel better, but the other he just doesn't know how to deal with or control it. But like I said in a previous comment...someone is about to gum up the works.

As for Tammy turning on the bitch switch with Kimmie, she knows she fucked up. First day back was an uncomfortable shock to her and she took it out on the wrong person. But I think the little pep talk she got from her favorite teacher will help.

And finally Matt. What can I say about this poor broken man? It's going to take some time for him to get over this. The love of his life is gone now and he just doesn't know how to deal. It's not something someone just gets over. Eventually he's going to see though that there's someone else out there that can love him just as much if not more :)

always love you long comments Hot Stuff <3

OK first, I'm sorry I'm "sooooo late" with my comment ;-) :P
Here goes! Get ready!

Brian, my friend, you are getting onto thin ice. Getting in between a funny back and forth between friends? Asking for a HotStuff (don't be jealous of the girl friends man, not cool), checking to hear if you are still hot? Putting your hand on her thigh? HOLDING HER FUCKING HAND?!!?! Brian, you are soooo deep in right now. And you fucking know it. If you really aren't ready to admit yet, you shouldn't even get in everything I mentioned before and try to pretend to be a grown up man who doesn't have a quickly developing crush on his fosterchild. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for him to fall of the wagon, but for the storysake and the "it's all wrong"-sake... you should at least pretend :P

Okay, I can skip the school stuff right? I mean, she doesn't want to move away from Brian anyway and everything else was just.. well.. maybe she'll make it anyway, but who cares... I have more important stuff to get to.

For the first time this story I kinda didn't like Tammy. She was selfish instead of supporting her friend. I don't really like Aaron, but for now he is nice to Kimmie and so are his friends. I get all the issues Tammy always had, but she had no right to go off on Kimmie like that. That's just mean. I know I know, she had her reasons. I know she's been through a lot, but I still didn't like it. Kimmie didn't deserve it.

Oh, one thing more about the school day... I do love all the sarcastic remarks. But you know... that's your writing. You make it seem so effortless and I know it's not, but just take the compliment, okay? You make it seem so so damn lifely, and I really feel like being there. Like standing there watching the scene. It's amazing.

Allright, let's get to my man Matt. My heart breaks everytime you write about him. I know it's too soon to get better, but I really want it to. I hate seeing him hurt like this. Trying his best over all his grief. I really can't stand seeing him like this. But I love how Kimmie knows this baby stuff. How she so easily gets the baby to be quiet and calm. And what I like most about it is that she isn't solving it for Matt, but teaching him how. But damn, just fix the man soon, I can't take it.
And here's a small peek of the fangirl.. I can't wait for Kimmie to spend more time with Matt and Aiden, taking care of the small guy.

I hope this comment makes up for me being not here on the first day. I'll just end with what I always do.. Please, Please, Please write! I'm begging you, this story makes my day, my week, my life. I want to read more now things are looking up!

Love you lekker ding! <3
