Where Have You Been All My Life?
Ch. 18- Vacay
I texted with Kamalei almost every day since she left, and talked on the phone with her once a week at Matt’s house when she would call. It had been over a month and I couldn’t stop thinking of her. I would look at our picture we took on the beach, when no one was looking, and wish we could go back to that day. I would look at the picture I secretly took of her sleeping every night before I went to sleep. We had tried to go back into the studio to see if we could get any ideas flowing, but I couldn’t get focused on anything but her. Jimmy and Brian knew how I felt, and tried to cheer me up constantly with their antics, but I just couldn’t get over her absence.
I never listened to our own music, as I thought it was weird to listen to myself, but Warmness on the Soul was constantly playing in my car, even becoming her ringtone.
Your hazel green tint eyes watching every move I make. And that feeling of doubt, it's erased. I'll never feel alone again with you by my side. You're the one, and in you I confide.
Kelly had left a little over a week ago, leaving Brian in a tizzy as well. They had ended up becoming a couple a week after Kamalei left, making me even more depressed about her not being here with me. I was happy for Brian and Kelly, but I missed Lei.
I pulled my car into Matt’s driveway and went into the house where everyone had been waiting for my arrival.
“Alright, so I wanted to get everyone together because I have an announcement.” Matt said happily grinning from ear to ear.
“Ok, what is it M?” Jimmy asked bouncing in his seat.
“We are going to visit my sister and Kelly for 2 weeks!” he cheered.
My face instantly lit up. I was going to see her again. I wanted to burst into tears then and there. I didn’t care if anyone made fun of me, but then I was reminded, I was in Matt’s house.
“I realized we need a vacation and no one is really able to focus these days so why not? We are starting another tour soon so I figured let’s have a real vacation before it’s too late.” He said looking over at Brian and me.
“MY LEI-LEI!!! I GET TO SEE MY LEI-LEI! MY KELLY BEANS! KELLY BEANS!!” Jimmy yelled as he ran in circles around the couches.
“So when do we leave?” Johnny asked.
“Tomorrow night. Go home pack your shit. It’s a long ass flight and we won’t get there until the next morning. Holy fuck I’m excited.” Matt said walking into the kitchen grabbing a beer.
Brian nudged me with a big smile, “We get to go see them Zee. Are you gonna stop pouting all the time now?”
“I don’t pout all the time…” I replied.
“Yes you do.” Jimmy chimed in.
“Do not.” I snapped.
“The only time you don’t is when she texts you…” Brian said quietly picking at his nails.
“Oh! I almost forgot. Kamalei doesn’t know. We are going to surprise her, Kelly is in on it. So no telling her!” Matt said nodding at Brian.
“Vacation in Hawaii… this is gonna be nice…” Johnny said putting his feet up on the coffee table.
“Get your feet off my table short shit.” Matt said knocking Johnny’s feet down. “Now you guys get the hell out so I can pack.”
I could barely contain my excitement to see her again. This would be the longest day of my life, I already knew. Jimmy followed me out of the house skipping joyfully.
“My Little Lei-Lei I’m coming to see you! And Zacky boy is too!” He sang passing me out to the driveway and to his car.
I pulled out my phone trying to figure out what to say to her without letting her know we were coming.
Kamalei, my clumsy girl, how are you today? ~Z
I figured it was a good start. Ask her about the weather etc., so I would know what to pack besides surf shorts.
Zacky boy! I’m good today. There’s a concert tomorrow and I’m helping out my friend’s band. It’s exciting. Probably not as exciting as one of yours tho. ~KLei
You have concerts there? ~Z
Yeah, that’s what we call them. They’re more like small local bands playing but on a small island it’s nice to see some good live music. Nothing like a real concert tho. ~KLei
That’s good tho. You seem excited and that’s good. I can picture you smiling. ~Z
You don’t have to picture it. I’ll send you a smile. ~KLei
She sent a picture with her text and I nearly melted. She was outside in what looked like a large courtyard with a large pavilion in the background. There were lots of plants and even a few palm trees blowing in the wind behind her. She had her sunglasses on her head with a big smile on her face. Her hazel green eyes lit up in the sunlight and I wished I was there now. She wore a black tank top shirt, and I was concerned when I saw a large bruise on her chest coming from the inside of the top of her shirt. It looked black and blue and painful.
What happened? Is that a bruise my clumsy girl?” ~Z
It took a good 5 minutes before she responded and I instantly knew it was a lie.
You know me. Clumsy. ~KLei
I knew better than to press the issue.
It looks nice out today? I take it it’s been good weather this week? ~Z
What’s with you today Zacky boy? Asking about the weather? ~KLei
Shit. She’s gonna catch on to me.
Just such a nice picture. It’s been gloomy here this week. ~Z
Smooth Zack. Smooth like a cliff.
Thank you. It’s been nice tho. It should be nice for a while too. Winter time is the only time it gets rainy really. ~KLei
Lucky you. I miss you. I wish I could be there to enjoy the nice day too. ~Z
I miss you and everyone too. Thanks for sending Kelly home. I started to think she was never coming back. I gotta run tho. The band is going to do a sound check and they need me. I’ll send you a video. Miss you and talk to you laters ~KLei
Alright. Have fun my clumsy girl. Can’t wait for my video. ~Z
I got in my car and drove out to the beach where we sat the night she ran from her father. It had been about 20 minutes, so I sat in the sand and checked my phone for her video. It wasn’t long but it was a different kind of music that I had never really been introduced to. It had a sound only Hawaii could produce. I could tell she had been dancing to the music as she took the video because it kept swaying back and forth. I played the video over again listening to the words again:
The sun is shining, the weather is right, A perfect day for us to unite, As I look at you today baby, I just wish I was your man, Girl, don't you know that?, Every night on my knees I pray, Askin that you will be mine someday, Dreamin bout you wearin my ring, Singin to you at our wedding, Can't you see it's you and me, Did you know I feel this way baby?, Did you know that girl?, Did you know that- babe, Tell me that you know that girl, Do you know that?
Another video came on after that, this time with her facing and talking to me:
“Zacky boy! What did you think? That’s not my friends’ band but it’s a great song. That’s the popular music here. They call it Island Reggae. I like it but don’t worry I still love my metal. Miss you Zee!” she said sticking her tongue out and waving before it cut off.
I really liked it. You’ll have to show me more of that kind of music. It’s different and I like it. ~Z
I will! I’ll talk to you later Z. Gotta go work now. Have a great day! ~KLei
You too Lei! ~Z
I slipped my phone back in my pocket before standing and walking back to my car. Her beautiful face still keeping me smiling. I kept thinking of the song she sent me and the words as I drove home.
If she only knew that was really how I feel…
I got home and raced inside. I had a bag to pack for Maui!
