Fake Reflection

Chapter 36

24 Hours Later:
Kevin slammed his fists down onto his desk before shoving everything off it. "How could you not hear or see anyone!?" he snapped at his secretary who standing wide eyed and scared in the doorway. "I-I'm sorry sir," she stammered out, "They must have come in when I was away at lunch. I-I don't know. I'm sorry." she said. Kevin looked at her with fury in his eyes. "Get out!" he snapped, and she jumped. "You're fucking fired! GET OUT!" he yelled, and she turned, fighting back the tears as she grabbed her purse, and hurried out the door.

This wasn't happening. He fucking had them. How could they slip out of his grasp again? How the fuck did she do it? There's no way she could have pulled this off alone. Those two pathetic excuses for cops had to have helped. He should have never sent them in there. Kevin stormed out of his office, and took the elevator to the basement level where the security office is. "I need to see you security footage for yesterday." he told the guy watching the monitors. The security guard was quick to comply, and soon had the footage running on some of the monitors. Kevin reviewed them, his anger growing stronger when there was nothing there. No one came in or out his office all day. How the hell did they get in?

Tobin walked up to the back maintenance entrance to the Federal Building, dressed in a janitors uniform, and a duffle bag over his shoulder, like he was suppose to be there. He's taken a stroll through and around this place a few times casing it, and knew the best way to get in, and avoid the security cameras. He's just never had a reason too until now. Tobin looked at the lock with a smirk, and had it open so quick you would think he had a key. It was what he was good at, and he loved every second of it.

Tobin strolled down the maintenance hall to the furnace room. Big old buildings like this have large duct work made for easy maintenance. It'll be nothing to make his way to the fourth floor. This one had a built in maintenance ladder to move up and down between floors. He opened the access hatch to the duct work of the building, and stepped in to start his climb to the fourth floor. He army crawled through the air duct that ran over the hall till he reached room 420.

It wasn't dark inside the office. He could tell from the vent that the light was off but the blinds on the windows were open. Tobin pulled out his handy powered snake screwdriver, and bent it to the angle he needed to unscrew the screws in the vent cover. He pulled it up through the opening, and left it in the duct to put back on when he was done. He lowered himself down through the opening, and landed softly on the balls of his feet, so no one would hear him.

He spotted the file cabinet first, and tried to open it only to find it locked. This would be a problem for him of course. File cabinet locks are one of the easiest locks to pick. He pulled the top drawer open slowly, and started to sift through the files. Tobin smirked at how organized McNicoles was, it made this easier. He pulled every file he saw that had something to do with any gang, and stuffed them in his duffle bag. After he went through every drawer, he turned to the computer sitting on the desk. He could sit there and go through every file, and wipe the shit out, but he had a faster idea.

Tobin unscrewed, and removed the housing over the tower for the computer. He popped the hard drive out, and tucked it into his duffle bag. He put the housing back on, and searched the rest of his office, finding nothing more. He looked up at the opening he entered, and frowned. It was too high for him to jump up to, and pull himself up. He looked at the chair behind the desk. He could just pull it over and climb up, but that would be too easy.

The desk was positioned only a few feet away. He climbed on top of it, and jumped to the opening, grabbing the edge, and pulling himself up. He screwed the vent cover back on, and pulled out a small business like card, slipping it through the openings in the vent cover. There was nothing identifying on it, just a simple typed two word phrase.
Thank You....

Kevin pulled up to the police department to see where they were at as far as finding out who stole the evidence. He walked into the security office to see Richard there reviewing footage as well. "Find anything?" he asked taking the empty seat next to the Chief. "Nothing useful," Richard told him with a sigh, "They avoided the cameras, kept their backs to the one in the elevator, and in front of the door to the evidence locker." he explained. It was like they had a working knowledge of the department. "And no one saw them leave?" Kevin questioned, beyond frustrated. Richard shook his head. "They didn't leave the way they came." Richard said showing him the video of the two uniformed men with their backs to the cameras as they walked out the back exit.

Richard left out the detail that one of the uniforms was an old discontinued one. He would recognize it anywhere considering he wore one for 10 years. He didn't want to believe it, but Richard had an idea to just how these two men got in and out without a problem. He didn't want to admit that his own son, and the girl he looked at as a daughter would help them to commit a very serious crime. There was no avoiding it, if anyone found out they helped steal evidence, their careers, and lives would be over. Why would they put all this in jeopardy for criminals?

"What about the key logs?" Kevin asked with a little desperation in his voice. "An officer, first name 'The' last name 'Body' and an officer first name 'Bat' last name 'Man'." Richard read the paper that had the log for the day before printed on it before laying it in front of Kevin with a slight toss. "You have got to be kidding me?" he mumbled as he glared at the paper before crumpling it up, and throwing it in the trash. "Who put them in the system?" Kevin asked. "Master codes, no way to trace them." Richard said. "You have got to be fucking kidding me!" Kevin snapped. "Hate to say it, but if we can't find anything to connect them to this, or the evidence we had, we're going to have to release them." Richard told him.

Kevin's anger flared, "Your fucking son is behind this. Him and Kim." he seethed. "You don't know that," Richard said coldly. He knew it was true, but he sure as hell wasn't going to sit here and listen to this puke accuse them of it, "I hear you talk about them like that again, and we'll have problems." he warned. Kevin narrowed his eyes before standing abruptly. "If I find out they had something to do with this, I will destroy their lives." he hissed before walking out with a slam of the door.

45 Hours Later:
Tammy walked into the living room were everyone has been camping out for the last three days. Papa Roach was still there, and Tammy hasn't let Shane and Kimmie go anywhere. She's not sure what's going to happen with them. Matt's not a cop killer, not unless they deserve it, so she knows they're not going to die. Doesn't mean she's going to tell them that. They may have helped get them out of there, but that alone isn't going to earn the trust back. She doesn't know when, if ever, Matt will let them back in. "I'm going to get the guys." she said getting their attention. "You still got a few hours." Jacoby said looking at his watch. "I know," she said turning her gaze to Shane, "I have an old friend I wanna catch up with."

She wanted to go alone to get them. There really wouldn't be any room for anyone to come along. That's why the Berry's wouldn't be bringing them home. That, and they had to hang back to finish up all the paperwork. Traffic was surprisingly light, and she made it there in less than an hour. Over the past four days there has been a growing group of protesters outside the station in support of Avenged Sevenfold. People that knew the better side of them and what they do, but that's what happens when you respect and support the people, they do the same for you. Tammy made her way through the crowd, which wasn't hard considering they pretty much parted for her. She walked up the steps to the front doors of the department, and turned to the protesters with a smile. "Don't worry guys, they'll be out in a couple of hours." she said hearing cheers as she disappeared inside.

Tammy walked up to the front desk with a smile that the lady returned. "I'm here to see Chief Halifax, is he busy?" she asked. "Let me check," the lady said reaching for her desk phone, "Your name?" she asked. "If its okay, I'd like to keep it a surprise. We haven't seen each other in ten years." Tammy explained, and the woman nodded. "Sure, follow me." she said standing.

Tammy followed her through the busy department, no one even so much glancing at them as the went on with their day. It wasn't surprising, not a lot of people knew her, just of her. The receptionist knocked on a door, and Tammy smiled at the sound of Richards muffled voice tell them to come in. The lady opened the door a little, and peeked in. "There is a young lady here to see you. She said she wanted it to be a surprise." she told him. "Okay, send her in." he said with some confusion in his voice.

The woman opened the door the rest of the way, and Richards eyes went a little wide. "Tammy?" he whispered not believing his eyes. "Hey there Dick." she said with a wide smile, and he couldn't help but laugh. "My God," he said standing from his desk as she stepped in, "Look at you all grown up." he greeted her with a friendly hug. Tammy let out a small laugh, and returned the hug. "I'd like to think I was grown up ten years ago." she said as they parted.

Richards face saddened a bit, "Younger than you should have," he mumbled, "I truly am sorry for the way your case turned out." he said, and she gave him a small smile. "Don't worry about it," she said sitting in one of the empty chairs in front of his desk, "I'm sure they got theirs." she said with a hint of amusement in her voice. Richard didn't miss the look on her face as he returned to his seat, and he wondered if she knew, "They're missing you know." he said realizing they never got to question her. They couldn't find her. "Are they?" she asked her face now void of any emotion, "I hadn't noticed."

A sinking feel started to form in the pit of Richards stomach, "You wouldn't happen to know anything about that?" he asked. "Are you going to turn this into an interrogation, because that's not what I came here for," she told him, "Do I know what happened to them? No I don't," she lied with ease, "But I will be honest, I don't care what happened to them." she said, truth dripping from her words. Richard nodded, and dropped the topic, "What did you come here for?" he asked.

Tammy let a smile grace her lips again, "I just recently found out you were Chief Boss Man, and wanted to catch up," she said, "I have some time before my husband and brothers get out." she added. Confusion filled him before a realization slapped him in the face. She couldn't be. They knew Gates wife's name was Tammy, could she really be her? "Who are you waiting for?" he asked. "I think you know who." she said with a slight tilt of her head. Richard sighed, and looked at her disbelievingly, "How? How did you get mixed up with them?" he asked. "I didn't get mixed up with them. They saved me." she told him.

The confusion was clear on Richards face. "They're not the bad men you think they are." she said. "Tammy, they're murders." he said. "I've seen no proof of that." she said a smirk playing at her lips. Richards eyes went wide. "What did you do?" he asked almost at a whisper. "I didn't do anything." she said just before an alarm went off on her watch. Tammy smiled, and shut it off before connecting her gaze with Richard. "Time's up."

She stood from her seat, and Richard was quick to follow. "They're bad people, why can't you see that?" he asked stopping her from leaving. Tammy shook her head. "Why can't you see that they're not," she paused with a smirk, "Your son did." Richard's eyes widened again, but he didn't say anything, "Shall we go get my family?" she asked heading for the door again. Richard grabbed her arm stopping her, "What about mine?" he asked with a little anger in his voice. If they hurt them in any way he didn't know how he would react. "Don't worry," Tammy said sensing the worry, "They are and will be fine." she told him, and he relaxed a little, releasing her.

Richard lead Tammy to the holding cells that contained Avenged Sevenfold. They were immediately met with confrontation from Boyd and McNicoles. "You can't let them walk out of here!" Boyd snapped when Richard started to open the cells. "We have nothing to hold them on." he said. "Only because she stole it!" William said glaring at Tammy. She smirked and strolled over to him standing on her toes so she could reach his ear. "Thanks for the pot," she whispered, and his anger rose, "Wish I had kept more." she said so only he could hear.

William's blood boiled, but kept his rage under control. He had other plans for her, and them getting out wasn't going to change a thing. He was just going to have to get them another way. Boyd stormed out before Shadows could be released from his cell, with his phone to his ear. "This isn't over." McNicoles said before following William out the door. "Looks to me like it is." Tammy said with a grin as he left. Richard released Brian, and he was quick to pull her into his arms, and claim her lips. "Can you wait till we get home?" Matt asked a little annoyed. Seeing the two of them only made the pain ripping at him stronger.

They gave him apologetic looks as they pulled apart, and Tammy noticed Richard standing there awkwardly. "Guys, have you met Chief Halifax?" she asked walking over to him, and pulling him over. "We've been acquainted." Brian said looking at her a little confused. "Oh good, Richard here worked on my case against Miles." she said watching the confusion fade and smirks come out. She wasn't the only one that noticed the smirks. Richard was sure they had something to do with those men's disappearance, but he couldn't prove it, and wasn't entirely sure he wanted too.

They stood in silence for a moment before Matt finally got irritated, "Well it was nice to meet you. Can we get the fuck out of here now?" he asked rhetorically, heading for the door. Richard lead them to get their personal items they had on them at the time of their arrest, including their guns. They could hold those as evidence since they couldn't match them to any crimes. The Berrys hung back to handle the paper work for their release. They had their own car, and would join them at the house later. Tammy tossed Brian the keys, and climbed in back. Matt always sat up front.

"What did you say to Boyd that pissed him off so bad?" Jimmy asked Tammy with a grin once on the road. "I just thanked him for the pot. I don't know why he got all pissed off." she said returning his grin, and hearing a few chuckles. "How'd you get us out of there?" Johnny asked. "I had help." she said, and proceeded to tell them how they got the evidence, all they way down to Shane and Kimmie making it disappear. He deleted everything in the database, and she threw all the physical stuff in the incinerator at the mansion. She also seen why the basement felt like it should be bigger. They had hidden rooms.

Tammy looked at Matt once she was done with the story. "They're at the house." she told him, and he looked at her with confliction in his eyes. Tammy went to say something else, but stopped when she seen Matt's eyes go wide at something over her shoulder, "Brian wat-" the hard impact cut him off, and the sound of metal crunching, and glass breaking filled their ears as they were forced through a guard rail. The SUV tipped to it's side, and started a barrel roll down a step hill before coming to a rocking stop, upside down at the bottom.

Notes

Whoa!! What the fuck happened there?!?!? I though for sure they would get out, and go home. Matt and Kimmie would work things out, and live happily ever after.....

*Clears throat*
