Fake Reflection

Chapter 32

Matt sighed, and rubbed his tired eyes as he shut off his computer, finally done for the day. It was late, and they had a job to do tomorrow. A couple's child was kidnapped, and being held for ransom, and no cops are to be involved, so what do people do when they can't go to the cops? That's why they have a job to do tomorrow. Matt stood from his chair, and shut the light off before leaving his office. He noticed the light on in the game room, and glanced at his watch. It was well after 1, who the hell was up?

Matt walked down the hall, and hesitated in the doorway. He hasn't had a chance to talk to Tammy these past few days. He hasn't even seen her these past few days, but she's good at avoiding people when she wants too. That's what she usually does when she's ticked someone off. She likes time alone to cool off, so that's what she gives them. He almost turned and walked away, but he filled with worry suddenly, and walked in sitting next to her. Tammy glanced at him when he sat down, but continued with her game. "What are you doing up? You're not having nightmares again?" he asked the worry clear in his voice.
Tammy smiled, still absorbed in her game. "No. I made the mistake of taking a nap with Lilly today." she told him, and he visibly relaxed, chuckling a little.

A bit of an awkward silence filled the air, and Tammy quit her game. She stood and switched the game, grabbing another controller and two headsets. This was something they did a lot. None of the guys really understood why they would sit there and talk to each other through headsets when they were right next to one another. They didn't care. Conversation flowed naturally when they could sit there and virtually shoot people, and the game sound was better.

They jumped into a random online game, and were soon racking up the kills. "I'm sorry for snapping on you the other night." Matt finally spoke, neither of them pulling their eyes away from the TV screen. "It's okay. I get it," she told him, "Sorry for stepping on your toes." she said, and he chuckled a little, "The sass was irritating," he agreed, "I would have apologized three days ago if you hadn't been avoiding me." he said with a smile, shoving her to the side a little with his elbow. "Hey you got me killed." she said with a pout before slapping his controller out of his hands with a grin. "Damn it." he grumbled with a smile, scooping up his controller just in time to die. "Ha! That's what you get, and I was just giving you time to cool off." she said, defending her absence.

A wide smile graced Matt's lips as they got back into their game, and he thought of how he "cooled off" that night. He couldn't get enough of this girl, and he was quickly realizing that he may just be in love. "I was good, Jena knew just how to relax me." he said with a smirk. Tammy chuckled and shook her head, "I don't need to know that." she said. "You tell me a lot of shit I don't need to know." he told her. "I think we're all a little to open with each other." Tammy chuckled. Matt let out one of his own, nodding in agreement.

Matt zoned out on the game as his mind started to wander to the blonde beauty he got to call his. Tammy glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, smiling at his wide dopey smile. She liked seeing him so happy. He had such a wonderful and contagious smile, and she enjoyed seeing it more often. "She's really got you gaga doesn't she?" Tammy asked a little teasingly. Matt chuckled again, "Is it that obvious?" he asked. "Well you got this big goofy smile on you face instead of your usual zoned out, mouth agape, game face." she pointed out with a small laugh. Matt's smile got wider, and he nodded, "Yeah she does," he said.

Tammy grinned as she focused back on the game, "Well I'm glad you're happy." she told him. "I am," he said before letting out a small laugh, "I'm glad you hired her," he said earning a chuckle, "I'm a little surprised you guys did." he added. "Why?" Tammy asked a little confused. "Cause her dad was a cop." he said. Her face washed with confusion, but Matt didn't notice since he was concentrating on the game. Her dad wasn't a cop. He worked in construction and demolition. "Well he died, so we didn't think it would matter." Tammy lied. What the hell did this girl tell him?

Matt's smile faded as he thought about the story Jena told him. "Yeah she told me about that," he said, and Tammy wondered how much she could get out of him. Something wasn't right. "I can't believe she was able to get over something like that. I couldn't imagine having to shoot the man that killed my parents at that age." he said softly. Now she was even more confused. Her parents weren't murdered. They were killed in a car accident. No one survived. Who the hell did she shoot? "Yeah that's fucked up," she whispered, "What was the guy's name again?" she asked pretending to forget when really this was all new to her. "Some serial killer in the 90s. The California Doll Maker she said." he told her. "That's right." Tammy said nodding in agreement as if she had just remembered.

She didn't want to say anything to him right now about the different stories. They had a job to do tomorrow, and he didn't need this hanging over him during that job. Why would she lie to him about this? It had to be a lie. She read the news paper article about the accident herself. She saw the cause of death on the death certificates. It wasn't murder. Tammy was pulled out of her thoughts when Matt set his controller and headset on the table in front of them. "You done?" she asked as he stood. "Yeah, Ima hit the sack. Got that job tomorrow, and I'm sure my lovely lady has already fallen asleep waiting for me." he said, the wide smile back on his face. Tammy force out one of her own, "Goodnight." she told him as he started to leave. "Goodnight." he replied before walking out of the room.

Tammy chewed on her lip as she mulled over what Matt had just told her. She couldn't understand why someone would lie about something like this. Unless she wasn't lying. Tossing her controller and headset to the table, she got up, and shut everything off before heading to the computer room. She had to look into this. Something like that would be big news. She shouldn't have any problem finding something. Tammy turned on one of the computers, and brought up a search. She typed in the name of the serial killer, but was brought to a no results page. How could there be no results?

She tried a few different searches, looking at serial killers in the 90s, serial killers shot by girl, nothing. She had to have lied to him, but why? Did she want him to think she was something she's not? And what would that even be? She could ask her, but there was something telling her that this wasn't a lie. Why couldn't she find anything about it? With a heavy sigh, Tammy shut off the computer, and left the room. She would try to get some sleep, and maybe ask Jena about it in the morning, or try some more digging.
***********************************************************************************************************
Tammy let out a frustrated huff as she stared at another no results page. This was starting to irritate her. The guys have been gone for two hours now, and she still hasn't been able to find anything on this serial killer. She stood from her chair, and left the computer room. Fuck it, she was just going to confront her about it. She had to know why she lied.

She made it to the end of the hall, and was met by the Berrys coming out of the left hall. "We were just coming to find you." JB said as they walked over to her. "What's going on?" she asked taking in the worried expressions on their faces. "The guys have been arrested." Matt told her. Tammy's eye went wide with surprise. "The job today was a set up. Matt just called us, we're headed to the station now." JB added. Tammy nodded, "What are the charges?" she asked, walking them to the door. "Murder." they both said.

How the hell could they get arrested? They're always so careful. Kimmie walked out of the right hall as the Berrys left, and saw the expressions on everyone's faces. "What's going on?" she asked walking over to Tammy. "The guys have been arrested." she told Jena, holding back the urge to blurt out what she wanted. Surprise washed Kimmie's face. How could they have gotten arrested? She hasn't turned anything in. Not that she was going to. "For what?" she asked. "It's not important right now," Tammy said heading for the stairs, "Can you get Evelyn, Dan, and Cam for me please?" she asked walking up the stairs.
She couldn't worry about Jena right now. Soon there would be cops swarming this place with their search warrants, and she had things to take care of. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, and brought up Kirk's contact. "Hello Angel, how are things?" he asked, happy on the third ring. "Not great at the moment." she told him. "What's going on?" he asked. "The guys were set up, and have been arrested for murder," she explained to him, "I'm going to send Lilly and Evelyn to you for a few days until we can clear this up." she finished as she walked into Lilly's room, smiling at the little girl playing on the floor. "Always happy to see my little Angel, I am sorry about the circumstances." he said. "Well hopefully we can take care of it," she said glancing at her phone when she heard a beep, "JB's calling me, I'll have Evelyn let you know when they take off." she said. "Okay, keep me posted. I love you." he told her. "Love you too daddy." she said before answering JB, "You got about 8 units headed your way." he said. "Shit," she hissed out hearing Lilly giggle, and she couldn't help but smile, "Thanks for the heads up." she said hanging up.

Tammy tucked her phone in her pocket, and looked at her daughter with a smile. "How would you like to go see grandpa for a few days?" she asked receiving an excited "yes". "Okay, why don't you start packing a bag, and I'll sent Evelyn up to help you. Mommy has some things to do." she said. Lilly jumped up, and grabbed her suitcase out of her closet, and started throwing random clothes in it. Tammy grinned at her before leaving the room and heading back downstairs.

Jena had gathered everyone like she asked, and were waiting at the bottom of the stair. Tammy sent Evelyn to help Lilly, and told her what was going on. Dan and Cam would drive them to the airport, and come back. Tammy needed them here. Lilly was excited they got to take the tunnel to the secret garage. She didn't know though it was to avoid the cops on their way. Tammy went to the computer room when the four left, and Kimmie followed her. She didn't know what else to do. Tammy turned on the computers, and went to Matt's office and turned on his before returning. She grabbed the mic off the desk, "Start transfer P-I-G-S." she spoke into the mic, and Kimmie chuckled a little. "Really?" she asked cocking a brow. "That's Jimmy for ya." Tammy said not sharing the chuckle.

She had other things on her mind, and new ideas developing. Maybe there was a reason she couldn't find anything. She didn't want to believe the thoughts running through her head, but it made more sense to her than anything else. This was going to crush Matt. Kimmie watched the computer screens as it appeared to be transferring the files somewhere. Matt's computer was doing the same thing. Where the hell was she sending the files to?
There was a pound on the door, and a voice came through that Kimmie didn't want to hear. "Open up! Police! We have a search warrant!" Kevin's muffled voice filled her ears. She looked back at Tammy in the computer room, and she was staring at her with an unreadable expression, but anger in her eyes. Kimmie's heart picked up, and she had this gut wrenching feeling in the pit of her stomach. Tammy pushed past her to open the door. She defiantly wasn't going to bring it up now. She had another hunch to go on, and she knew just where to find out what she needed. Tammy opened the door, and plastered a fake smile on her face. "McNicoles, what an unpleasant surprise."

Notes
