Fake Reflection

Chapter 15

Kimmie stood staring blankly out the floor to ceiling window she was suppose to be cleaning. The dinning room and kitchen are attached. Where the two meet is the start of a very long wall of bullet proof, mirrored, floor to ceiling windows you could see out, but not in. Kimmie looked at the squeegee in her hand, she just did not have the energy or want, to clean them. Last night was one of the longest of her life, and she didn’t get as much sleep as she would have liked. Once she realized that what they did didn’t bother her, or change how she felt about Shadows, she was finally able to sleep only to be jolted awake by her alarm an hour later.

With a heavy sigh, Kimmie dipped her squeegee into the bucket of window cleaner, and started washing the first window. If anything had changed at all it was her increased attraction to the man. She wanted to get closer to him even more. Find out what makes him tick, and do the things he does. She just doesn’t know if she can keep her feelings about him under control. If there was anything that was going to jeapordize the way she did her job it was those.

“You look exhausted.” Syndy said standing next to Kimmie with her back against the window Kimmie wasn’t cleaning. She glanced at her from the corner of her eye as she continued to wash the window. If she hadn’t seen her coming through the window, she probably would have been startled. “Long night?” Syndy questioned cocking a brow as she studied Jena. “Just restless.” Kimmie said not having the energy to deal with Syndy and her….whatever.

Kimmie glanced at her again. Was that sympathy on her face? “I’ve had my fair share of those.” she said. Kimmie dropped her squeegee into the bucket, and turned to face her. “Really?” she questioned. Tammy gave her a slight nod, “Nightmares.” she said kind of shrugging it off. Kimmie nodded with a soft “Oh”, and Tammy smiled a little at her. “Why don’t you go home, and get some rest.” she said. Kimmie shook her head. “I’m fine, really.” she argued. “It’s not a problem. Evelyn and Emily can handle things today.” Tammy said pushing herself off the window. “Are you sure?” Kimmie asked. She didn’t really want to leave, and it had nothing to do with her job, but she could really use the sleep. “Yea.” Syndy said before she started to walk away. “Thank you.” Kimmie called out as she watched her go.

Tammy gave her a wave over her shoulder, and disappeared down the hall past the kitchen. She had her suspicions about Jena, but she also had her doubts. There was nothing that alarmed her from the start. Tammy had actually hoped that Matt would take notice of her. Jena had a wonderful interview, and Tammy liked her. It wasn’t until she caught her at Matt’s door did she start to wonder about her. Of course she could be wrong. She has seen her checking him out before. Maybe she was just curious about him and nothing more. A restless night doesn’t mean she followed them. She did loose her parents at a young age, and Tammy knows how traumatic that can be. Maybe that’s what kept her up last night. Maybe she was just being paranoid.

Tammy has wanted Matt to find someone for so long, and now that he’s showing interest in someone, maybe she’s just worried he’ll get hurt. Maybe that’s why she’s really suspicious of Jena, or maybe she was just over thinking things. There were too many questions without any answers, and Tammy was tired of frying her brain over it. Instead she was going to focus her attention on someone else today. The one person they knew was up to something.

Tammy leaned against the right hall door frame. The utility closet is visible from there, and right now Emily was getting supplies. They’ve been watching her from day one. So far she hasn’t done anything yet, but she has a fascination with The Rev’s computer room. Tammy watched in plain view as Emily backed out of the closet and closed the door. She took a few quick steps as Emily disappeared out of view, and slid to the opening of the center hall. Tammy rarely wore shoes in the house. It wasn’t so much for the quiet factor, as it was the fun of sliding around the house in her socks. She was easily amused.

Tammy peeked around, and watched as Emily casually walked past the computer room quickly checking the door before continuing on. She shook her head, and chuckled to herself. No matter how many times you try, it’ll never be unlocked, she thought to herself. Tammy wasn’t sure why she wanted in there, but she checks that door everyday, and she’s not the only one that’s seen her do it.

Emily reached Matt’s office just as the door opened reveling Shadows and Gates. She gave them a smile in acknowledgement before turning down the hall, and heading for the infirmary. Matt and Brian glanced at her before looking to Tammy standing at the end of the hall. She gave them a knowing look, and glanced at the computer room door before looking at them again. They nodded slightly in understanding before joining her at the end of the hall. “Think she’ll ever get in there?” Brian asked with a smirk. “I don’t know but it’s going to be fun catching her when she does.” Tammy said just as Jena walked out of the right hall towards the door.

Tammy watched as Matt’s gaze instantly went to her. “Hey,” he said jogging up to her, “Where are you going?” he questioned when she stopped and looked at him. “Home. I didn’t get much sleep last night.” she said. “I told her to go,” Tammy piped up, “She’s exhausted, look at her she looks like shit.” Tammy said with a grin. “Gee thanks.” Kimmie said flushing a little red. “You don’t look like shit.” Matt whispered to her, flashing her a smile as she got redder. “Thanks.” she said looking down. “You do look tired though, but I’m glad I caught you before you left.” he said causing her head to snap up to him. He almost looked nervous. “We’re all going out Friday night,” he started rubbing the back of his neck, “Would you like to come with us?”

Kimmie couldn’t hide her smile as her heart started to race a little. He just asked her out. Yea it wasn’t a date per se, but he still wanted her to go out with them. She’d take it for now. “Yea, sure. Where? I can meet you.” she said. Matt shook his head with his own smile, “I’ll pick you up around eight.” he told her. Kimmie smiled wider secretly hoping that “I’ll” meant just him. “Okay. I’ll be ready.” she said before forcing herself to turn away to leave. She didn’t have to look back to know his eyes were on her. She could feel it, and it made her stomach do flip flops. Maybe this will lead to a real date.

Matt turned on his heal, and strolled over to Brian and Tammy with a victorious smile. Brian and Tammy looked at each other with grins seizing an opportunity to fuck with their leader. “Matt and Jena sittin in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G.” they sang out. “Enough children.” Matt ordered with a smile, unfazed as he walked past flicking them both on the forehead. They turned watching him walk back down the hall rubbing their foreheads with wide smiles. “You should sing Friday night, she’ll love it!” Tammy yelled down the hall at him. “Maybe!” he yell over his shoulder before disappearing into his office.

Brian looked at his wife with confusion and slight amusement, “I thought you didn’t trust her?” he asked. “I don’t,” she said looking at him, “But I’ve never seen him this happy, and don’t want to stand in the way of something if I’m wrong.” she said. Brian smiled and nodded. He walked over to her, and slipped an arm around her waist. “I have the rest of the day, lets go pry Lilly from Jimmy, and go do something.” he suggested. She looked up at him with an approving smile. It would be a good way to get her mind off things.
