No Pulse Inside of Me

Chapter 55

Tammy’s POV:
Is this a dream? It doesn’t feel like a dream. It feels real. I can feel the sun warming my face, but yet here I am standing in front of a house I haven’t seen in 12 years. How the hell did I get here? I remember being shot. There’s blood on my shirt, but there’s no wound. Am I dead? I don’t know why, but I felt peaceful, and happy when I realized the truth. I was home.
I took off up the porch stairs, and threw open the front door. “Mom!” I called out. I know she’s here, I can feel it. I heard dishes being moved around in the kitchen, and ran through the living room. “Mom?” She was there. Drying her hands on a towel. “Hey, sweety.” she said with a smile. My smile. I ran up to her, and wrapped my arms around her. Her missed vanilla sent filling my senses. “I’ve missed you.” I said holding tight. I didn’t want to let go. I didn’t want to loose her again. “I’ve missed you too.” she said as she stroked the back of my hair. “Do I get one of those?” I heard the voice of my brother behind me. I smiled wide, and pulled myself away from my mom, and let my brother’s 6 foot 5 frame engulf me. He picked me up, and twirled me around. “I have so much to tell you. So much has happened.” I started once I was set down. “We know, and there will be plenty of time for that,” mom said walking closer to me, “When it’s time.” she said. I looked up at her confused, and felt some invisible force yank me to the living room. “What’s going on?” I asked as tears started to fill my eyes. “You have to go home.” my brother said who was standing next to me suddenly. “But I am home.” I cried, just before I was yanked to the door. “We’ll be here when you get back, but you still have your whole life ahead of you.” my mom said appearing on my right side. “The worst is over,” my brother said from my left. “Besides, you have my niece to raise.” he added with a smile. “I’m pregnant?” I whispered out placing a hand on my lower stomach. They nodded, and a smile graced my face before I was yanked back again to the sidewalk I started on. “We’re so proud of you and the woman you’ve become.” mom said from the porch. “I love you both so much.” I said one last time as the tears streamed down my cheeks. “We love you.” was the last thing I heard them say before I was yanked into darkness….

Third Person POV:
Johnny sighed, and threw the defibrillator paddles down. “Time of death 4:13a.m.” he said to the nurse. Seven hours. Seven hours he spent closing the bullet path, lesions, and pulling out bone and metal shards. He was almost done when her blood pressure dropped, and she crashed again. He fought back tears as he yanked off his surgical cap, and threw it to the floor frustrated, and angry at himself because he couldn’t save her. He was about to storm out when he heard the beep. “Doctor?” one of the nurses called out. Johnny was quick back to her side as the beeps started to quicken. “Don’t do that to me again.” he scolded with a relieved smile, quickly resuming the surgery.

One of her ribs was completely shattered, and he would have to put an artificial one in. It was a surgery that could wait for another time. Right now he just wanted her stable, alive. He pulled out the last shard of bone, and closed the lesion with surgical glue. “Alright lets get this lung breathing again.” Johnny said looking up at the nurse across from him. She handed him a syringe with a large needle. Inserting the needle into the collapsed area of the lung, he drew out the air, decompressing it. Johnny pulled out the needle, and watched as the lung started to expand and contract. With a smile he tossed the syringe on the metal tray with the other surgical instruments. “Blood pressure’s stabilizing.” the nurse told him as she read the monitors. “Let’s close her up.” he said with a relieved sigh.

Johnny pulled off his gloves and surgical gown, and tossed them in the bio hazard bin. He washed his hands in the sink as the nurses wheeled Tammy to the ICU. He stood there for a moment, hunched over, hanging on to the edge of the sink. In a matter of two weeks he’s had to face two of his friends deaths. He hasn’t told anyone that Jimmy crashed on the operating table. Just Jimmy. They didn’t need to know that, just that he was alive. He pushed himself off the sink, and stepped outside the OR. He really hoped he wouldn’t have to face another for a long fucking time. There was no way out of it this time, Brian had to know. With a sigh he turned, and walked down the hall to the waiting room door.

Brian sat in a chair with his head in his hands. He’s been like that for about a half hour trying to block out Matt’s pacing. He has no idea how the guy is still going. He’s probably covered every inch of this waiting room a thousand times, and it was starting to get on Brian’s nerves. He knows its just a nervous habit of his, and he was really trying hard not to snap at him at the moment. Zacky and Jimmy have just been sitting quietly. They looked like they were zoned out in their own little world. The Berry’s are passed out sitting up against each other, but with every little noise they jump awake. “Will you sit the fuck down!” Brian finally snapped at Matt, causing the Berrys to jump up, and Matt to stop dead in his tracks. “Sorry.” he whispered, glancing up quickly at Matt before resting his head in his hands again. He was falling apart inside. That bullet was meant for him, and she took it pushing him out of the way. He should be on that table right now.

Matt looked down with sorrow at his best friend. He knew all to well what Brian was feeling. He’s been in that seat, only she didn’t make it. It wasn’t the same scenario, but still a gun shot. It’s the main reason Brian distanced himself from relationships. He saw how bad Matt fell apart, and he never wanted to go through that. Now here he was with the same pain ripping through him with each passing minute.

Matt let out a sigh, and went to sit in the chair across from Brian. He didn’t even have time to get comfortable before Johnny finally came out. His face was grim, eyes red from exhaustion, and they immediately thought the worst. Johnny ran a hand down his tired face, and looked to the impatient eyes on him. “I almost lost her,” he started watching faces fall, “I called time of death at 4:13,” he said, and everyone almost simultaneously looked at their watches. It was just a little after five a.m. “But,” he continued letting a small smile come out, “She’s so stubborn, death still can’t get her,” he said watching relief sweep through the room. “She’s stable, but not completely out of the dark yet. She’ll have to stay in the ICU,” he paused when a nurse came out with some charts, “for the next week.” he finished flipping through the papers he was handed. “Can I see her?” Brian asked. Johnny heard him, but didn’t respond right away. Something had caught his eye in the general test results. They were mandatory general tests the hospital does on emergency patients, just so they have an idea on a persons condition. “Not yet.” he said softly before turning without another word, and leaving out the same door he came in.

She was pregnant, and he had to make sure the baby was still alive. He quickly walked down the hall at almost a jog past the operating rooms, and around the corner to the ICU. Tammy was still unconscious, would be for awhile. Johnny rolled over an ultrasound transducer, and squirted some gel on her lower abdomen. A smile graced his face when the image of the baby appeared on the screen, and he let out a sigh of relief when the heartbeat came through. Everything was okay. He wiped off the gel, and put the machine back before leaving the room, the smile still on his face.

Johnny made his way back to the waiting room where everyone was still waiting. “What the fuck? Why did you just leave like that?” Brian asked pretty irritated. “Sorry there was something I had to take care of first.” he told him. Brian looked at him kind of confused when he didn’t explain any further. “You can see her now.” Johnny said ignoring Brian’s look. “Just Brian right now. The rest of you go home and get some fucking sleep.” he said with a slight smile before leading Brian to the ICU.

Brian fought back the tears when he followed Johnny into the room. He didn’t like seeing her like that anymore than he did Jimmy. He pulled over a chair, and wiped a tear that escaped away as he sat down. He laced her fingers with his, and kissed the back of her hand as Johnny did a check on her vitals. “Can I stay?” Brian asked. “Yea, but if something happens, and I need to work quickly, you have to stay out of the way.” Johnny said coming around to where Brian was sitting. Brian gave him a nod before moving his gaze back to Tammy. Johnny gave him a sight pat on the shoulder, and left the two alone. He would tell him when she woke up.

Notes

Yay for babies :) And how awesome is Johnny? Saving everyone's lives and shit. I always pictured him in the story as one of those doctors that work so fluently, and naturally, like it's what he was born to do.
Two chapters left :( one after this and then an epilogue
I need help. Tammy needs a gang name for the sequel, and my mind is drawing a blank. Suggestion? Drop them in the comments. I take all you have.

I would be interested in a rewrite if that’s what you feel like you wanna do. I would read the new version too, even though I don’t find anything wrong with the original.
