No Pulse Inside of Me

Chapter 33

Matt’s POV:
“So what’s this big job you wanted to talk about?” I asked Adam. Him and Jacoby were here to discuss said job. “Disturbed has a huge shipment coming in.” he started to explain. “I don’t like the sound of this already.” I told him. Of all the gangs anywhere in the world, Disturbed is one I do NOT like to deal with. There is just something about them that rubs me the wrong way. Its like they don’t have souls. David Draiman, the leader, seems almost psychotic. “It’s a 300 million dollar shipment of pure Columbian.” Jacoby said. That’s a lot of coke. That’s 100 mill a piece. “And I already have a buyer.” Adam added. “How’s it coming in?” I asked him. I may not like dealing with Disturbed, but that’s a lot of money. “Boat.” he said. “You wanna highjack it?” I asked. They both nodded. “What do you know about how they handle shipments?” I asked. “Just this one,” Adam started to explain, “My buyer has a guy on the inside. I gotta map of the route they’re taking, how many men will be on the boat, and where the shipment will be dropped at.” Well it’s a start. “The problem is Dave checks in with the captain of the ship every hour on the hour.” Jacoby said. “We need him to miss two checkpoints.” Adam added. “Okay, so why not just highjack the shipment when it reaches dock?” I asked them. “Cause there’s risk of a shoot out there.” Jacoby said. “See the thing is this particular shipment is coming in on Dave’s birthday, so he’s not going to be there at the dock when it comes in.” Adam explained. “So there’s going to be twice as many men at the dock when it comes in to make sure it gets to where it needs to go.” Jacoby said. “I see you two have discussed this already.” I said to them. They smirked. “I figured the two of us would be able to talk you into it better than just me.” Adam said. “It’s my buyer that wants it.” he added.
We could probably pull this off without a hitch if we plan it right. I still don’t like the idea of high jacking Disturbed’s shipment. “Do you know where Disturbed is going to be?” I asked. “They have a luxury suit booked at a shore side hotel.” Jacoby said. “It’ll just be Disturbed there. Dave does it every year, a night they get away from it all.” Adam added. “So how do you plan on making Dave miss two checkpoints?” I asked them. “Well that’s the problem,” Adam said scratching the back of his neck, “not really sure.” he said honestly. I nodded. “How long do we have?” “A month.” Jacoby said. I had an idea brewing, but that would mean sending one of my own in alone with Disturbed, and the idea didn’t settle well with me. “I’m going to be honest with you guys,” I started, “I really don’t like the idea of this, you know how I feel about Disturbed.” I told them. “Yea, but if we plan it right, they’ll never know it was us.” Jacoby said trying to convince me. “100 mill a piece Shadz.” Adam added. Like I didn’t already fucking know that. Fuck that’s a lot of money. “Alright, but we do things my way, or no way.” I said. If we were going to do this then I’m going to be in charge. They nodded in agreement. “Okay, first things first, the distraction.” I said pulling out my phone. Gates is going to be pissed at me. He’s just as uncomfortable with Disturbed as I am.
I sent Tammy a text to come to my office. It’s been almost two weeks since her first kill. She’s still a little out of it. The first week was the worst. It always is. The guilt crushes you, and all you think about is if there was another way. Eventually you come to realize there is no other way. Kill or be killed. It got a little easier after Brian told her about his first blood. He took it the worst out of all of us, but his was an innocent in the wrong place at the wrong time. A drug deal gone bad caused a shoot out. Everyone was hiding for cover behind what they could. Bullets were flying from both sides, and he sees what he thought was one of them moving from behind a dumpster to a car for cover. He shot, she fell. Yes, she. Walking home down the same alley she did every night after closing up the dinner she worked at. A single mother of two small children, working two jobs to support them after her husband left her. As soon as he saw on the news that an innocent bystander was killed in the cross fire, he had Jimmy hack the police database so he could see the case files. Sure enough there was her picture and name paired with the crime scene photos. He melted down right there in Jimmy’s computer room. Jimmy cradled him there on the floor while he sobbed for two hours. She had filed abandonment on their father, so him and Jimmy worked behind the scenes to make sure her parent got custody of the children. They were good people, and were there for their daughter, and grandchildren till she was able to do it herself. He sent a rather large anonymous donation to the family, so they could give their daughter the proper funeral she deserved, and made sure they would never have to worry about being able to support the kids. He even set up savings bonds in the kids names they can cash when they’re 18. The six year anniversary is coming up. Brian goes to see her every year, and apologizes, tells her how her children are doing. The boy is 12 now, and the girl is 9. They’re good kids, do well in school. He keeps an eye on them, even sends them a birthday card every year with cash stuffed in it. All anonymous of course. He knows it won’t bring their mother back, but at least he knows they will be okay.
My office door opened, and Tammy walked in, closing it behind her. “This better be important. I was smoking the guys in Need for Speed.” she said with a grin. We chuckled a little, and she greeted Jacoby and Adam before sitting. “You’re not thinking what I think you’re thinking are you?” Jacoby asked with a little worry. “I am.” I told him. “You can’t send her in alone with Disturbed.” he said. “Do you have another way? If you do I would like to hear it.” I said. “Gates isn’t going to like it.” he said. “And?” I asked cocking a brow. “Question.” Tammy said interrupting our small argument. I looked at her. “Whose Disturbed?” she asked. “You haven’t told her about Disturbed?” Jacoby asked. “We’ve been busy.” I said shrugging him off. “They’re the one gang that makes Shadz shake in his boots.” Adam said taking a shot at me. I sent him a glare, and his smile quickly faded. “Its not that, they just rub me the wrong way.” I said. “I’ve never heard of them.” she said. “That’s not surprising people don’t talk about Disturbed.” I told her, and they don’t for good reason. “Whose the most ruthless gang you’ve ever heard of?” Jacoby asked her. “Slipknot.” she said with an unimpressed shrug. She still hasn't talked to Jim, and as far as I know he still hasn’t tried to contact her. “Disturbed is ten times worse.” he told her. “People don’t talk about Disturbed because there’s no one left to talk. They don’t care. Women, children it doesn’t matter. No witnesses in their eyes.” I told her not hiding my distaste for the gang. She nodded as the information soaked in. “So what am I doing?” she asked. “Well,” I said swallowing a lump that was forming in my throat, “I need use of your “talents” so to speak.” I said.
I gave her a rough overview of what the job was. She was going to be a “birthday present” in a way. Just dancing long enough for him to miss the two checkpoints. She won’t be completely defenseless. I’ll have Zacky make her some accessories with hidden weapons in them. Her stereo will be rigged with a camera and mic so we will have eyes and ears in there, and the Berry’s will be in the parking lot outside. Plus she’ll have an ear piece that will let her hear us. “As soon as that second checkpoint is missed, I want you out of there.” I told her as we finished her briefing. She nodded, and I told her to send Jimmy in before dismissing her.
She left, and a met a disapproving look from Jacoby. “I don’t like it just as much as you.” I told him trying to ignore the nasty feeling forming in the pit of my stomach. “You summoned oh great one?” Jimmy asked as he entered my office. “I need to highjack a boat.” I told him. He nodded, and stroked his chin like he was in deep thought. “I have a device that will send out a magnetic pulse shutting it down.” he said. “What about cell phones?” I asked him. I don’t need the ship captain calling Dave letting him know the boat died. “Yea it’ll knock out their phones too. The only problem is attaching it to the boat,” he said, “Someone needs to attach it to the side of the boat, then I can activate it killing the engine. Once I shut it off everything will start back up.” he explained. “Neil can scuba dive.” Adam piped up. “That would work. I have electronic suction cup handles he can use to grab the boat,” Jimmy said, “I can show him how to attach the device, its not hard.” he finished. “Alright we’ll do that. I also need you to rig a stereo with a camera and microphone,” I told him, “I have to send Tammy in to distract Disturbed, and I need you to be my eyes and ears in there.” I told him watching his eyes fill with worry. “You’re sending her in alone?” he questioned. I nodded. “The Berrys will be outside, and I will probably have Johnny in a room on a different floor.” I told him. He didn’t relax much. Dave is the kind of person that likes to let is victims suffer and die slow. If things do go wrong, and Johnny can get to her in time it would increase her chances of living. I dismissed him, and told him to send in Zack.
The rest of the day was spent planning, and briefing everyone on what they were doing. Zack will be making Tammy some wrist cuffs, one containing a small smoke bomb, and the other a blade. He’ll also rig her shoes with a blade in each one. Him and Barry will be on a cliff over looking the high jacking point. The boat will be heavily guarded, and the two will be snipers. Gates, Jerry, Tony, and Brad will be the ones boarding the ship. Jacoby, Adam, and I will be waiting at the docks with the buyer. Tobin will be watching our backs with a sniper. Adam may trust his buyer but I don’t. The docks we will be at are several miles away from the boats original destination. This way we will be long gone my the time they realize its not showing up.
I’ll wait till everyone leaves to let Brian know I’m sending her in there. He’s not going to be happy, and I honestly don’t know how he’s going to react. I ran my hand down my face and let out a sigh after Adam and Jacoby left. I sent Brian a text to come to my office. This is a conversation I really don’t wanna have, but it’s better to get it out of the way. We’re definitely going to need a night off later this week.
Brian came in closing the door behind him. “What’s up?” he asked. I sighed and looked at him. “I’m sending Tammy in alone with Disturbed as a distraction.” I told him watching the anger etch his face. “You can’t send her in there!” he said raising his voice. “I don’t have any other option.” I told him calmly. “Bullshit find another option.” he demanded. “There isn’t any!” I said raising my voice as well. “They’ll fucking kill her if something goes wrong,” he started, his voice filling with sorrow, “you can’t send her in there.” he tried pleading. I know I can’t, but I have too. “I’m sorry Brian there’s no other way.” I said. He stood from his seat, and placed his hands on my desk, getting low in my face. The look in his eyes was one I’ve never seen before, and it was one I never cared to see again. “If she dies I’ll never forgive you.” he seethed before storming out of my office.

I would be interested in a rewrite if that’s what you feel like you wanna do. I would read the new version too, even though I don’t find anything wrong with the original.
