No Pulse Inside of Me

Chapter 32

Tammy’s POV:
“This movie sucks.” I said. I was suffering through Paranormal Activity with Zack, Johnny, and the Berrys. “I agree.” Zacky said from his seat in the recliner. “Have you guys not been paying attention? This movie is awesome.” JB argued next to me. I was sitting on the couch with him and Matt. My feet were in Matt’s lap, and I had my back against Jason’s shoulder. I seen Johnny and Matt nod in agreement with JB. “It’s the fucking Blair Witch Project all over again.” I argued back. “Yea, and we all know what a wonderful piece of crap that was.” Zack said backing me. “This is so much better than that.” Matt said. “Seriously?” I asked him cocking a brow. “It is.” he defended. “What the hell is this garbage you’re watching?” I heard Brian behind us. “See. He’s seen 5 seconds of it, and knows it’s crap.” I said. “Whatever.” I heard them mumble.
I looked back up at Brian, and noticed he had two duffel bags. “What are doing?” I asked. “I gotta a swap to do. You wanna come?” he asked. “God yes save me from this hell.” I said jumping over the back of the couch. “It’s not that bad.” JB said. “Take it from the two horror movie connoisseurs, this movie blows fat donkey dick.” I said hearing a chuckle from Zacky. “It really does.” Zack said through his chuckle. “Yea, yea. Weren’t you leaving?” JB said shooing me away. “Yes, thankfully.” I said with a smirk turning to Brian. “Lets get the fuck outta here.” I said lacing our fingers together. “Grab your gun, and a coat its cold today.” he said. “Its like 50 degrees out.” I said. Its December, and yea it may be a little unseasonably cold, but its not that bad. “Not all of us are from a frozen tundra.” he said with a smirk. “It can get just as hot in Iowa as it can here,” I said narrowing my eyes, “you’re just a pussy.” I said returning his smirk. He looked at me with fake hurt, and I giggled running upstairs to grab my gun and a hoodie. The wind was blowing too, it was going to be a little chilly. “I’ll be in the car!” he yelled up at me. I grabbed a dark purple hoodie off a chair, and my gun out of the night stand, tucking it in the front pocket. I skipped down the stairs, and out the front door to meet Brian in the car.
I hopped in the passenger seat, and fastened my seat belt as Brian started the engine. “Is that a scarf?” I asked eying the garment around his neck. “Fuck you.” he said as we pulled out. “Pussy.” I coughed earning a finger. “Not now, we have a job to do.” I said looking out the windshield trying to act serious. He chuckled, and grabbed my hand as we continued down the road. “I’m going to drop you off a couple blocks away.” Brian started to explain keeping his eyes on the road. “They’re expecting me alone, and this way if something goes wrong we’ll have the element of surprise on our side.” he said turning down an alley. “Okay.” I said as he stopped, and put the car in park. “Got my back right?” he asked looking at me. “Always.” I smiled giving him a kiss before getting out. “Hey,” he said stopping me from closing the door. I bent down, and looked at him. “These things usually go without a problem. Keep an eye and an ear out just in case. I’ll come around and pick you up if all is smooth.” he said. I nodded and shut the door as quietly as possible.
I strolled down the alley watching Brian drive down a little further before turning a corner. I heard the trunk slam shut when I reached about halfway to were the alleys intersected. I reached the edge of the rundown building on the corner of the intersection. This is a bad side of town, somewhere people won’t cast you a second glance. I heard some commotion and yelling, but I could make out what was being said. Way to jinx yourself, I thought peaking around the corner, and seeing Brian fighting with two guys. One was taller than him, maybe Jimmy’s height. The other was about the same size as Brian. He was holding his own, but I could tell he wasn’t going to be able to much longer.
I heard something skid down the alley, and seen Brian’s gun stop next to a dumpster a few feet away from me, around the corner. Element of surprise. I crouched down so I would be hidden behind the dumpster, and made my way as fast as I could to Brian’s gun. I reached around real quick, and grabbed it. I peaked one more time around the dumpster. Brian was on the ground, and they were both kicking him in the chest and stomach. I ran back around the corner, so I wasn’t popping up from behind the dumpster. Putting both hands in my hoodie pocket, I gripped both guns firmly, and strolled out around the corner. “Excuse me!” I called out to them. I seen them quickly hide their guns behind their backs. Oh they were going to kill him, well that was a mistake. “Can you help me?” I asked with a sweet smile as I continued to walk to them. I saw sinister smirks come across their faces as they scanned me up and down. I could almost see what was going on inside their heads from the looks on their faces. Corrupt men have corrupt thoughts. “I’m new in town, and kinda lost.” I said closing the last bit of distance. “This is a bad neighborhood to be lost in sweetheart.” the tallest one said. He did not just call me that. “Boy you got that right.” I said with a sinister smirk of my own. Pulling out the guns, I shot both simultaneously in the head. I’ve spent some time over the years at the shooting ranges around town blowing holes into photo copied pictures of my “dad”. It’s an amazing stress reliever.
I looked down at Brian who was staring intently at me with a smirk on his face. “That was hot.” he said as I knelt down to check him out. I chuckled a little, and gently held his face in my hands. His nose was probably broken. His cheek was swollen, and had a gash in it. Probably will need stitches. One eye was bruised around it, and his lip was busted and swollen. He winced in pain, and held on to his ribs as he tried to sit up. Might have some bruised or broken ribs too. I put his other arm over my shoulders, and helped him up as his face contorted in pain. We moved as quickly as he could, and I put him in the passenger seat. “Where are the keys?” I asked. “Inside coat pocket.” he said lowering his arm. I reached in his pocket, and grabbed the keys. Shutting his door, I quickly grabbed the duffel bags, and the briefcase that had the money in it. I popped the trunk, and opened the false bottom, placing the bags and briefcase inside. I started to hear sirens in the distance as I closed the trunk. I jumped in the drivers seat, and started the car. Throwing it in reverse, I quickly backed down the alley and around the corner before throwing it into drive, and taking off the way we came.
I weaved through traffic a little till I thought we were mixed in enough not to get pulled over. “You jinxed yourself, you know that right?” I said glancing at Brian. “W-what?” he coughed out. “You said these things usually go without a problem. You jinxed yourself.” I said again. He let out a pained chuckle. “Damn it woman, don’t make me laugh. It hurts.” he said holding his ribs again. I let out a small laugh. “Dr. Gnome’s first aid is in the glove box.” I told him keeping my eyes on the road. Johnny always has first aid stashed all over the place. “Fuck it. He can clean me up. It hurts to much to move.” he whined. “Quit being a baby.” I laughed at him earning my second finger of the day.
I pulled into the drive, and up to the house. I helped Brian out, and we slowly made our way inside. We were on our way to the infirmary when Jimmy and Matt came out of the kitchen. “What the fuck happened?” Matt asked as Jimmy replaced me as Brian‘s crutch. “Fuckers were going to screw us and their boss over,” Brian started to explain, “Kill me, and take off with his money and our dope.” he said. He smirked a little, and looked at me. “Now they’re dead in an alley.” he finished. I caught glances from Matt and Jimmy just as it finally hit me. I killed someone. My stomach knotted, and the air left my lungs as if I had the wind knocked out of me. Not just one, but two people. I killed them. I could feel the tears burning my eyes, and everything seemed to disappear around me. They’re dead because of me. I don’t know how to handle this. I’ve never killed anyone before. I tried to gasp for air as the guilt crushed me. Maybe I didn’t have to kill them. Maybe I could have gotten them to back off. I started to shake slightly as the realization pounded it’s way into my head. The shaking got a little more violent until I realized someone was gripping my shoulders shaking me.
I snapped out of my daze, and met the knowing hazel eyes of Matt. “Listen to me,” he started, “I know exactly how you feel right now. There isn’t a single person here that hasn’t gone through first blood.” he said trying to calm me. “You did what you had to do.” he tried reassuring me. I nodded. I did. They were going to kill him, but it still wasn’t doing much to ease the guilt for taking their lives. “You saved his life, and that’s all that should matter.” Matt said at one more attempt to calm my emotions. I noticed Jimmy and Brian were gone. Probably in the infirmary. “Does it get easier?” I asked at a whisper. “For the assholes that deserve it, yes.” he said. “But you just gotta remember, its us or them.” he finished. I nodded again, and got pulled in for a rare Matt hug. I couldn’t help but chuckle a little as I returned his embrace. “What’s so funny?” he asked looking down at me with a smirk. “Sorry, I just wasn’t expecting a hug.” I said. “Yea well don’t get use too it,” he said pulling away, “I have a reputation to protect.” he said trying to act bad ass again before shooting me a dimpled smile. “Of course Captain Awesome. Wouldn’t want something like a hug damaging your image.” I said returning his smile. “Glad to see we’re on the same page.” he said before walking away. I chuckled a little, and made my way to the infirmary.
Brian was laying on one of the beds with his shirt off. I could see bruises on his stomach, and his ribs were wrapped up. Johnny was cutting the string from the stitches he just finished. “Hey.” I said sitting on the edge of the bed, and brushing some hair out of his face. “Hey.” he said gripping my hand in his. “How bad is it?” I asked placing my other hand on the side of his face. “He’s got a few broken ribs, but other than that just some scraps and bruises.” Johnny said from behind me. I nodded keeping my eyes on Brian. “Are you okay?” he asked with concern and knowing eyes. “I will be.” I said softly. “You saved my life.” he said touching my face. I leaned in and kissed his forehead. “I know.” Lets just hope it helps with the guilt.

Notes

Her first kill. Hopefully it gets easier for her.

I would be interested in a rewrite if that’s what you feel like you wanna do. I would read the new version too, even though I don’t find anything wrong with the original.
