I Award You...

When the food was prepared and ready to eat, the refugees lined up and filled their plates before going over to their cots to eat. It's absolutely amazing that all these people are back alive and the ones who didn't get affected by the dead was just as equally incrediable. After all the other people got their food and began eating, I saved a seat for the General and his men at our table.

"General, where did you get all this steak?" my uncle asked as he cut up this 2 inch thick steak.

"We just happened to come across a beef cattle farm on the way here so a few of my men butchered them."

"I've been eating deer and rabbit for so long, I forgot what a steak tastes like." my uncle said laughing. They both continued their conversation while I ate with Brian and Felicity. I just can't believe that the life I've become so accustomed too is soon going to be nothing more than a bad dream but the memories I've made will be the only thing that won't die. The nightmares of killing 2 of the most important people to me will always be ingraved into my memory and I wish i could take a blow torch and melt those memories away.

Dinner went as great as I knew it would and everyone came up to Felicity and the other cooks complimenting them on how good the food was. My sister can cook a hell of a meal that's for sure. Everyone finished and I helped Felicity gather the plates from the serving line and take them back to the kitchen to be washed up and put away. I'm so used to getting dishes done so fast but not as fast as these went. I mean were were done in under 3 minutes with the other cooks helping us. Felicity and I left the kitchen and went into the cafeteria as the General stood to his feet and went over to a small stage where he was in front of everyone.

"Ladies and Gentleman may I have your attentions please?" General Halverson said as he lifted one hadn in the air. The light conversations that flooded the cafeteria went dead silent and Halverson smiled.

"I'd like to that Felicity and the cooks for doing such an amazing job on preparing us a wonderful meal and to everyone who helped set up these cots for us. Now if the following people would please join me on the stage, there's something I have to do." I listened as General Halverson called up Dante, Uncle Lucas, Sammy, John, Jacob, Mike, Dakota, Matt, Brian, Jimmy, Zacky, and Johnny and they all lined up right behind each other in the order they were called.

"These people you see here today are the reason we all live today and to commindate their achievements in overcoming over-whelming odds and risking their their lives to protect the people in their small group, it's my pleasure and honor to award these fine people the Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Exceptional Public Service Award Medal, Army Outstanding Civilian Service Award Medal, Legion of Merit Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Bronze Star." General Halverson said as he picked up each medal and securing it over the hearts of each of them. Felicity and I cheered loudly along with the other people in the building. My Uncle and Dante looked like they were about to bust with happiness and I couldn't be more happy them. Halverson saluted each person after pinning the medals to their chests and Brian saluted him back with a smile on his face.

"Now if Felicity and Serenity would please join me up here." I looked over at my sister and we both walked side by side up to the stage and stood in front of the General.

"These 2 young ladies have went to extreme messures to bring the nation back to normal as it should be. I know you girls lost your father, Dr. Daniel Druthers, and mother, Faith Druthers, to the disease and I thought I would say a few words on behalf of your late father. Daniel, kept something else from you girls and that was him being a decorated war hero with the Army for his services in the Iraq War. He was wounded and was to recieve a Purple Heart for his wounds but he never got to recieve it since the facility was over-run. Your father was a great man and he helped this country in the best way possible...through his daughters. For your services in following the formula Daniel had successfully created, I'm proud to award both of you the Special Citation of Merit Fourth Class, The Purple Heart in honor of your father Daniel Druthers, and the Bronze Star." General Halverson explained before pinning the medals on our chests. I looked down at the medal and couldn't stop myself from smiling.

"Serenity, I have a special commendation to present to you. Serenity Druthers, for your outstanding achievement in keeping these 29 people from certain death and the will to fight against the dead and to make this place the America it was many years ago...I award you the Congressional Medal of Honor. For your Conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty for the people of this United States of America." I smiled as General Halverson secured the medal around my neck and shook my hand.

The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest achievement anyone can ever get and to say that I was jumping right out of my bones inside would be an understatement in its highest level. This has to be the best day in my entire life!!
