Know Me By Name

Growing Up Part 1

ALEKSANDER POV

1915

My back strained as I lifted a boulder. The Roses said I needed physical and mental strength in order to truly understand my powers. Mother said she would teach me when I had learned how to control my emotions.

I was twenty now, finally coming into my body. However, I was noticing that my aging was slowing down. That probably explained why Mom looked like she was about twenty-five years old.

The rock slipped from my grip and hit the ground. Sighing, I turned to look at the werewolves training me. Under the layers of clothes, they were all surprisingly muscular. It had to come from all the running and shifting they did.

"Alek! The goal is to carry the boulder," Dan said, lifting up his own rock over his head.

I turned to Brian's second. "How is this supposed to help me with my powers? I don't even know what they are! No one will tell me what powers my parents have, what powers I will have."

Brian and Jonathan walked over to me. It honestly seemed like those two were the only ones that cared about my growth. Of course, my mother cared for me, but it seemed like she only wanted to repress her own powers.

"Kaylee hasn't told you anything, has she?" Jonathan played with the ring on his middle finger. It granted him the right to walk int the sunlight without burning up. "What do you know about your parents?"

I cocked an eyebrow. "Every time you talk about my parents, it's like you're in awe of them. What is no one telling me?"

"Jonathan, I think Alek should talk to Kaylee about that. It's her choice what she tells her son." Brian shook his head. It had been a bit since his last shift, and it was clear he wanted to transform as soon as possible.

"Can't you just tell me?" I lifted my boulder again. At least lifting rocks gave me something to do. No one would tell me the full truth about myself or my family, and it was driving me insane.

"If your mother won't tell you, there has to be a good reason." Jonathan pat my shoulder. "Just ask her."

Sighing, I threw the boulder. All of this was incredibly frustrating. No one would tell me the full truth, and no one would really train me. James taught me about the history of the world and let me explore around the humans, but it didn't feel like enough.

I wanted to learn it all: my entire history. Mother wouldn't even tell me what exactly we were training for. It was just about getting stronger. There had to be a reason.

Zachary walked over to me, staring at my flexing hands. The Nephilim were a weird bunch. I wasn't sure where that came from.

"Kaylee wants to speak with you, Aleksander." He nodded to the Rose Mansion. Why did they all treat her like the queen when she was only a Fallen? Shouldn't they follow their own? Who was my mother, really?

She was sitting in the Rose Council room, in the chair with the heart on it. She looked so regal and powerful. It was the first time in a long time, maybe even ever, that I had seen my mother look strong, powerful, and dignified.

"Mom?"

My mother looked me up and down. "Aleksander, I've got to share the truth with you. It finally feels like the right time." She motioned for me to sit down. I sat, ready for whatever she had to tell me. It took her five years, but I was ready to hear what she had to say.

She sighed and pulled a hand through her hair. "Before I Fell, I was the Guardian Angel, protector of souls. My father was Uriel, an Archangel. The Guardian job was to ensure that souls went to where they belonged. The powers God granted me were sight, flight, strength, agility, and speed.

"Your father's father is an Archangel named Michael. Your father's mother is an Archangel they call Lucifer. Your father is the angel of death. It is Michael that sentenced me to Fall because of Satan's mark." My mother pulled up her sleeve to reveal a pentagram.

"This is why we train, Aleksander. I do not know what powers you would have had had you been born in Heaven, but we need to bring them back. Neither Heaven nor Hell are right in their direction . And as a guardian, it is my job to protect souls. The souls that need the most protection are the humans and the Roses. And I will protect them."
