Know Me By Name

Growing Up Part 2

MATTHEW'S POV

For decades-- centuries-- I felt my life rush by. The names on my list no longer mattered. There was only one that did, and she was nearly impossible to get to. But she wasn't the only important name on my body. Of course, my love and my son were, but the entire Council had appeared on there as will, and I could only question His will. If He wanted me to take on the Council and Satan, so be it.

No one had control over me anymore. God may put names on my list, but none would be crossed of until I knew the fate of my love and my son. The Council didn't even call me, not after Michael had done what he had done. Every Archangel was dead to me, especially my mother and father.

"Matthew," Raphael said. He was the only Council member allowed in my presence. He was still on my list though. "The Council is requesting you."

I turned, eyes blazing. "The Council is not my concern. They can come to me."

"In this case, it would be best for you to go to them. Gabriel had sensed something strange. The Council does not want other angels to hear."

My wings fluttered. Since Kaylee had Fallen, my wings had turned completely black. The entire world felt black without her by my side. Why would my wings hold color without her in my world? And for Raphael to dare talk to me about coming to the Council? The angel must have lost his damn mind.

"The Council has never summoned me, and they will not now. If it is an urgent matter, you Archangels can come to me. If it was truly as important as your claim, the Council would have found me sooner."

Raphael looked at me. "A guardian's powers have flared up. Gabriel sensed them. He says they feel like Kaylee's powers did."

Something in my heart fluttered at the sound of her name. I had been dead to the world since her name had been burned off me. She had been my heart and soul; she always would be. If the Council was tricking me, the part of me that was Lucifer's son would come out. The angel of death would come alive.

I narrowed my eyes. "Prove it."

Raphael guided me to the Council room. Anticipation ran through my blood. If Gabriel had found my love, I would kill him last. If the Council was tricking me, he would be the first to feel my sword. My arm itched with the feeling of it wanting to come out.

"Speak." My voice was dark. I didn't feel like an angel of Heaven. Without my love, Heaven was not my home. "And make it quick."

The messenger of God stared at me, eyes cold. He did not like to be spoken to like he was less than. What the Council failed to realize was that all angels, including Archangels, did not compare to me. Death was above all, and even Hell understood that.

"Have care in how you speak," Gabriel said, "You may not respect the Council, but we do represent God's will. You will treat us with respect."

"No." Folding my arms across my chest, I stared each Archangel down. "Now, speak."

Gabriel looked me up and down. "Your attitude amazes me, Matthew. The Council is God's Will, and you abuse the privilege you have time and again. We are Archangels, Matthew. You abide by our rules."

The sensation of my sword pressed against my forearm. The Messenger had no idea who he was dealing with. Gabriel may have been among His first angels, but I had been created with ore power than any Archangel.

"Gabriel, tell me what you saw. You Archangels may have the time to fuck around, but I have a list I need to work on. So, tell me why the Council has called me here."

The Archangel sighed. "You are... something, Matthew. I sensed a Guardian's powers flare up."

Something flared in my chest, something I hadn't felt in many, many decades. It was a tiny flutter in my heart, and I didn't want to get my hopes up, but it felt right.

"Are you going to give me more than that, Gabriel?" My black wings spread behind my back, more than ready to take action.

The Messenger of God shot me a look. He should know better than to think he intimated me. "I do not know where, and I do not know when. What I do know is that a Guardian's powers flared on Man's Earth. Perhaps, the other half of Original Love is alive. The other option could be your unborn child growing in to their powers."

The feeling in my chest grew and my wings grew as well. I turned to the Council. "My Reapers will take care of the souls until my return."

Without pause, I flashed to where Lucifer had Fallen. This is where I needed to get to my love or my child. All it would take would be one little step. Taking a deep breath, I leapt.

Angels lost their wings when they Fell because they pushed them out in an attempt to catch themselves. Doing this typically caused their feathers to rip out though they could still keep the skeletal part of their wings. The only problem with that was that the feathers needed time to regrow.

As I fell, I kept my wings pressed tightly to my back, ensuring that my feathers would say in. There was no controlling when or where I would land. I just prayed it was near where I needed to be... and close to the right time era. I needed to land in a future time. If I landed earlier, I could mess with an entire timeline.

As I neared Earth, I summoned my sword. The closer I got, the better I could see what time I would land in. It was definitely a time I could land in, but I had no idea where I was.

I landed and the ground splattered up around me. Several faces looked at me. The girls in what I assumed in awe, and the boys with slight terror. My back rippled with the urge to spread my wings, but I quickly suppressed it. The looks continued... and it was probably because I was shirtless and grasping a large sword. Quickly, I pulled the sword back in which garnered some frightened looks.

A fat, short man walked over to me. "What are you?"

I locked eyes with him. "Human." Instantly, those around me forgot what they had seen. They all thought I was human. Now, I just needed a shirt.
