05: Life Changes

Zachary James Baker and I have been very best friends since middle school. However, before that in elementary, we absolutely hated each other. Once in third grade, I was playing on the the jungle gym at school and Zack was making fun of me because my short, chubby arms weren't strong enough to carry me across the monkey bars.

"You can't do it because you're a girl!" Zack yelled from the ground while I struggled to grab the bar in front of me. I furrowed my brows but ignored what he said and focused on proving him wrong. I reached once again for the bar in front of me and succeeded.

"Ha!" I exclaimed. However when I reached for the next bar, my hand slipped and I fell into the sanded ground.

Zack erupted with laugher and pointed at me. I wanted to cry but instead I stood up, dusted my dress off and shoved Zack Baker as hard as I could. He stumbled back a little and stopped laughing.

"I'm telling!" He threatened.

"Hmph!" I shoved my hands on my hips. "You better not, Zack Baker! I'll tell on you first!" I told him.

"I didn't do anything!"

"Uh huh!" I said in a singsongy voice. "You made fun of me and called me names!"

"I did not, Beks!" He said.

"She doesn't know that! And I told you not to call me that! My name is Rebekah! My friends call me Bekah but we aren’t friends! So you can just call me Rebekah!" I stuck my tongue out at him.

Zack narrowed his eyes. "I hate you," he paused and then added with a smirk, "Beks!"

I groaned and stomped my foot. "I hate you more!"

The year soon passed as did summer and before I knew it, it was time to put up with Zack again. This time, I was playing on the balance beam when he ran up to me.

"Hey, Beks," He teased.

I rolled my eyes. "Stop calling me that!" I groaned and jumped off the balance beam.

"So guess what," he said casually.

"What?" I crossed my arms.

"Chicken butt!" He erupted with laughed and I rolled my eyes.

"You're so stupid, Zack!" I told him and then turned back to the balance beam.

"I’m telling the teacher you said the 's' word!" He called after me. "You're gonna be in lots of trouble!"

I turned around. Our teacher did not tolerate anyone using the 's' word. "Please don't!"

"What are you going to do to stop me?" Zack asked, smirking again.

"I don't know." I said softly staring at the ground.

"Sucks to be you!" He said and began to walk away.

I looked up and exclaimed, "Zack, please don't tell on me!"

He turned around with a devilish grin on his face. "I won't if you kiss me!"

"Ew!" I said disgusted. "My mommy said boys have cooties!"

Zack frowned. "I don't have cooties."

"That's not what my mommy said!"

Zack exhaled sharply. "Fine! But now I'm telling that you said the 's' word and you said I have cooties!" Zack said but didn't move.

I sighed and thought about it for a moment. "Okay, but not on the lips."

Zack smiled, "Okay!" I slowly inched my way over to him and when we were close enough I hurriedly moved to peck him on the cheek but he was quicker and moved his head so instead of my lips landing on his cheek they landed on his lips.

I gasped as I pulled away, "Zack!"

"It was an accident!" He fibbed, as his cheeks and ears turned red.

"That is so gross!" I said rubbing my lips with the back of my hand.

Zack looked at the ground and kicked a pebble. "Yeah..."

"You're not going to tell on me now, are you?" I asked.

Zack shook his head before walking away.

Years passed, and before I knew it we were in middle school together. Zack came to school in a band shirt, and I complimented him on it. We talked about the music we liked and he told me his parents had bought him a guitar for his birthday.

After school that day, I reluctantly went to his house to watch him play and we've been friends ever since. We did everything together and continued to do so once he met Jimmy, Matt, Brian and Johnny.

In high school, we got closer. Zack helped me through my first real heartbreak, and I helped him though his. The guys and Zack started the band, and played a few shows. We all started to date around, but still managed to stay best friends.

Prom night something changed. There was a lot of drinking, a lot of dancing and kissing. I lost my virginity that night. It's the cliché of all clichés, right? But I lost my virginity to someone I loved, really loved. It was with Zack – another cliché, right? I had broken up with my boyfriend a few weeks before prom, and Zack was doing the on and off thing with Gena. It just happened.

Afterwards, we talked about it and decided even though we had feelings for each other it was just best to be friends. We we’re so good to each other and we didn’t want to ruin that with a high school relationship. So, we didn’t tell anyone and we pretended it never happened. He kept doing the on and off thing with Gena, until they became more serious and I dated around, but never found anything serious until Jake.

It’s funny how things work out, right?

It’s also funny how things don’t work out.

Notes

Flashback chapter to kinda give you guys a better look at Rebekah and Zack's friendship! How cute is elemantry school Zack though?

Thank you for the feedback so far! Please, please keep it coming! Just to give you guys some idea for when this series will end, Chapter 20 will be the last! I have up to chapter 12 written right now (plus I have the last chapter written), but I think I can get everything I need to happen done in time to end it around 20.

Thanks again!!

OMFD! Z and Beks are sooooo cute together! *hearty eyes*

Alright Ms Vengeance, Imma tackle this baby. I’ll comment when I’m all caught up. Love your work, girl! But if you make me cry again, I will kick you in the knee ;p

I don't think I've ever been this heartbroken by a fictional story. You're writing style is phenomenal and I will definitely continue reading all of your stories moving forward.
