The Way Your Heart Sounds

026

When Monday finally came around, Jimmy was standing at the door like an excited toddler waiting for Lauren to get ready. He nearly sprinted out the door and into the car when she told him she was ready to go.

“I’m so glad they said yes, I’ve been waiting for this surgery for years,” Jimmy said as he buckled his seat belt.

“Do glasses really suck that bad?” she laughed, starting the car.

“They do when you play drums. And contacts are just uncomfortable,” he sighed. “Plus, I look way sexier without glasses.”

“You look sexy either way, honey.”

Jimmy grinned and kissed her cheek. As they were driving to the eye doctor, he couldn’t stop talking about how excited he was. Lauren thought it was cute. They got to the doctor’s office after a few minutes, and Jimmy couldn’t wait to get inside. The receptionist told them to wait a few minutes for a doctor, and they took a seat together in the waiting room. After ten minutes or so, one of the doctor’s came out and called Jimmy’s name. The doctor looked a little intimidated as Jimmy rose to his full height and greeted him with a hug.

“Are you ready to cut my eyeballs open?” Jimmy asked. The doctor laughed sheepishly.

“Well, we’re just peel-” Jimmy interrupted the doctor and asked if they could get started now. Lauren shook her head.

“Sure. I’ll take you back there,” the doctor smiled. Lauren gave Jimmy a kiss and wished him good luck before he was off with the doctor. She sighed and took her seat again. To pass the time, she read some magazine that they had in the waiting room when her phone rang. It was Brian.

“Hey Brian, what’s up?” she answered.

“Hey Lauren. Did Jimmy get his eyeballs cut open yet?” Best friends, same sense of humor.

“He actually just went back there for the procedure,” she said.

“How long before he can see?”

“Probably tomorrow, depends,” she replied, flipping through the magazine.

“Let me know when, we’ll come to his house and visit,” Brian said.

“I’m sure he’d like that. I’ll text you.”

The next hour or so went by pretty slow. Lauren had cycled through all of the boring magazines in the waiting room, and was now reading medical journals on her phone. Jimmy finally came out into the waiting room, escorted by a doctor and a nurse, and his eyes were covered in bandages.

“Where is my beautiful girlfriend?” Jimmy asked, waving his arms around. Lauren smiled and walked over to him, grabbing his hands.

“Right here. How’d it go?” she asked the doctor.

“As expected. He can take those off in an hour or two. I’d like to see him tomorrow to make sure his eyes are healing well. Other than that, he’s free to go.”

Lauren nodded and thanked the doctor before locking arms with Jimmy. She brought him out to the car and buckled his seat belt.

“Do your eyes hurt at all?” she asked as she started up the car.

“Nope. I don’t really feel them,” he answered, “I wish I could stare out the window though.”

She smiled and put some music on for him so he’d at least have something to concentrate on. She also told him that Brian would come visit him tomorrow, which made him happy.

“Do you wanna come with me to a birthday party next weekend?” he asked suddenly.

“Sure. Who’s birthday is it?”

“Jason. I’m sure you met him. He’s my drum tech,” Jimmy answered.

“Yeah, I remember him. Sounds fun,” she smiled at him, then realized that he couldn’t see her. He smiled back at her anyway.

Lauren pulled up in front of the house and helped Jimmy get inside so he could lay down and rest a bit. He insisted that he was fine, but it’s not like he could do much without being able to see anyway. After exactly one hour had passed, he started asking if the bandages could come off. She suggested that maybe he could wait a little while more, but he didn’t seem fond of the idea. To avoid dealing with his incessant begging for the next hour, Lauren decided to go ahead and take his bandages off. He slowly opened his eyes and winced a bit.

“Does it hurt?” she asked.

“No, but my eyes feel dry and it’s super bright in here.”

She turned the bedroom lights off so the only light was the natural light coming from the windows. Then she handed him the eye drops the doctor recommended so he could put them in.

“How’s your vision?”

“Still a little blurry, but definitely better than before,” he answered, tilting his head back to put the drops in his eye. He hissed when the drops touched the surface of his eye.

“You should see a pretty steady improvement over the next few hours and days,” she smiled and patted him on the shoulder.

By the end of the day, Jimmy reported that his eyesight was getting better. He woke up the next morning and was surprised to see that his vision was almost as good as it was with glasses on. Lauren sent a text to Brian and told him to stop over after Jimmy’s appointment so Jimmy could get a good look at him with his new pair of eyes.

The doctor was satisfied with Jimmy’s results, and said that his eyes were healing just fine. Jimmy was happy as a clam on the ride home back to the house, because he knew his friends would be stopping by soon. As soon as they got back into the house, Brian’s car pulled up. He had Matt with him as well. Lauren opened the door to let them in when Jimmy ran past her to hug them.

“Hey bud, how are you feeling?” Matt asked.

“Great! I can see pretty well,” Jimmy said. He stared at Matt and Brian for a moment. “You know, I really haven’t properly seen you guys before. You’re both really good looking guys.”

Matt and Brian both busted out laughing.

“You’re not too bad looking yourself, Rev,” Matt said, returning the compliment.

“You guys wanna stay for dinner?” Lauren asked.

“Actually, we’re supposed to have dinner with Val and Michele tonight,” Brian said.

“We just stopped by to see how the big guy was doing,” Matt added.

“You guys are so nice, I love you guys,” Jimmy hugged both of them at the same time.

A bit of a filler for now. Enjoy!

Not sure why I waited so long to leave a comment, especially considering that I've been reading this story since the beginning. You made me laugh, cry and hope so thank you very much. I absolutely love your writing and the story itself was simply great. It was a great journey and you definitely kept me company when you updated and I had to work the night shift.

Just like the others, I loved both endings and I honestly can't wait to read the sequel <3

I loved both the endings and I have reasons to like both too! Ever since I started reading this when you first updated, I badly wanted Jimmy to recover and have his happy ending with Lauren. And you did give me what I wanted!

But when you started giving hints about Zacky's feelings towards Lauren, I wasn't really excited because she deserved to be with Jimmy :p
Then eventually when Lauren and Zack started supporting each other, I didn't mind if they ended up together.

So ultimately, I love both the endings!

So I've spent pretty much my entire day at work (business is slow) reading the alternate ending and that's definitely the ending I saw coming when I was reading. I love that Jimmy got a second chance in the ending you went with, but the alternate one was bitter-sweet. I'll definitely get into your Zacky story, next

Both endings were very good! I figured Zacky and Lauren would get together in the alternate ending! But in the first ending with Jimmy still alive, I can only imagine their struggle with the feelings.

Aww, I'm loving the ending you went with. I'll read the other one if I get bored at work today, or I'll read it tonight when I get home. And then check out your Zacky V story!! I should probably also make a start on the next chapter of my Syn Gates one, too.. ha
