Chapter Three

Hannah

I was always most relaxed and happy at the end of the day when I finally got back into the house. This was my space, I felt safe here, nobody could hurt me here. When I let myself in through the front door I was quick to disarm the alarm and brace myself for the warm welcome I was moments away from receiving as Jack the German Sheppard bounded towards me excitedly, barking some form of greeting at me.

After feeding Jack and making myself a snack, I made my way upstairs and into my bedroom where I quickly got situated at my desk and booted up my computer while I checked my copy of Dads itinerary and realised that I could probably get a hold of him if I called him now, so I did. I slipped my phone out of my pocket, unlocked it, opened up my list of contacts and called Dad.

‘This is George Samuels. I’m sorry, I can’t come to the phone right now but please leave a name and contact number with your message and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.’

“Hey, Dad.” I groaned into the phone when I heard the all too familiar beep “I thought I might be able to catch you, but I must’ve just missed you or something so… Just give me a call when you get this. Stay safe, I love you.”

I ended the call quickly and plugged my phone in to charge and left it sitting on my desk before turning my attention to my computer and my food.

The week was already flying in, pleasantly surprising Hannah because normally whenever her father was out of town on business the days seemed to drag by in the big, empty house.

She’d been pretty busy with homework for the most part if she was being completely honest, but other than that she was doing her usual thing and avoiding being sociable with anybody else, but tonight Erin was supposed to be coming over with pizza so that the two of them could continue their re-watch of Supernatural.

Erin had called a few minutes ago to tell Hannah that she was just picking up their pizzas and that she would be at her place really soon, so Hannah quickly set about loading Netflix up on the big TV in the living room. While she was waiting for it to load her phone pinged with a new text message notification. Expecting it to be Erin with a question or a random statement, she quickly grabbed her phone off of the coffee table and opened the new message, but she was taken aback when she realised that it was from an unsaved number, but it didn’t take long for a small smile to tug at her lips as she read over the words that were displayed on the screen.

Hey, Hannah, it’s Jimmy. I hope you don’t mind, but Erin gave me your number so that I could get in touch with you. It’s
totally cool if you think it’s weird, you don’t even have to answer this but it would be totally awesome if you did.

Alright, so Hannah didn’t know much about these guys, but what little information she had on them let her know that Jimmy Sullivan could be quite the dork sometimes, and that was going to make it really difficult to ignore his text message so she quickly typed out a message and sent it to him.

It’s a little weird, but I don’t mind. Was there something you needed my number for, specifically?

Just as Hannah exited out of her messages and locked her phone, Erin appeared across the room, right in front of her, holding pizza boxes with her signature grin on her face. I squealed, jumping in the air and clutching my chest to keep my heart from beating out of it.

“What the fuck are you doing?!” She yelled, breathing heavily.

“Coming over,” Erin laughed, her whole body shaking as she did so “You should’ve seen the look on your face!”

“What, don’t you use doors like everybody else anymore?” Hannah asked, smacking the back of her head when she bent down to put the pizza boxes down on the coffee table.

“Not when I don’t have to,” She shrugged “Do you have any idea how easy it is to just zap yourself places?” She asked rhetorically “Of course not, because you refuse to use what you’ve got.”

“I thought you were finally going to let this shit go, Erin.” Hannah sighed, sitting down on the couch and opening up her box “The whole concept of it has always really freaked me out – knowing I’m not normal – so I never got comfortable enough to see what I could do.”

“That’s so unfair,” She groaned, sitting down next to me and turning on Supernatural “Just because you weren’t comfortable and Uncle George didn’t know how to deal with you – you’ve been completely isolated from yourself, Hannah, it’s who and what you are. You have to come to terms with it and finally teach yourself, or…”

“Or what?” She asked, grabbing a slice of pizza “You’ll teach me?” She laughed, completely joking.

“Exactly!” Erin exclaimed excitedly “I know for a fact that you know the basics, so why shouldn’t I teach you everything else?”

Hannah sighed, taking a bite of her cheesy slice of pizza, and spoke with her mouth full while Erin smirked at her, taking a bite of her own.

“I already know just as much as you do, E.” Hannah rolled her eyes “I know how to use telekinesis, concilium, pyrokinesis, divination, transmutation, vitalum vitals and descensum,”

“The seven wonders,” She nodded “If you know how to use them, why don’t you?”

“After the things I’ve seen…” Hannah swallowed my food and took a quick drink of sofa “I just can’t, alright? The fact that I have the ability to use all of those things and more terrifies the crap out of me. It’s not… normal.”

“Exactly!” Erin laughed “We aren’t normal,” Hannah swatted her away as she tried to hug her “But, the real question is – do you know what your other three hidden powers are?”

“Resurgeance,” She nodded.

“Same as me,” Erin mused.

“It runs in the family,” Hannah chuckled. “Injury transference.” She cringed.

“You’re a human voodoo doll?” Erin asked and Hannah nodded, confirming.

“Clairvoyance, too.”

“As much as I’d love to keep talking about this problem, I’m distracted by the fact that your phone has beeped twice with new text messages when I know that I’m the only person you text.” Erin teased.

“It’s Jimmy.” Hannah told her nonchalantly as she opened the new messages “You should’ve guessed that since you’re the one who gave him my number.”

“You’ve been texting back and forth with Jimmy all week and you never told me?!” She asked, shocked with fake hurt on her face.

“No,” Hannah frowned “He only text me less than an hour ago.”

“Oh my God…” Erin cooed “That’s so adorable!” She reached for Hannah’s phone but she held it out of her reach and shot her an expectant look, waiting for her to explain herself. “I gave him your number on Monday night when I was hanging out with the guys in the park.”

“He waited that long to actually text me?” Hannah asked, and she nodded quickly with a shit-eating grin on her face.

“I totally knew it, he likes you!”

Hannah

It was Saturday, and I knew that there was absolutely no way that I was getting out of going to Matt’s party with Erin tonight.

“I’m really not sure about this, E.” I whined as she dragged me into her bedroom.

“Shut up,” She laughed, pushing me towards her bathroom “Get in the shower, shave everything that can be shaved with a new razor from the cabinet, scrub twice and then get back out here and dry your hair.”

There was no point in fighting her on this, so I locked myself in her bathroom and turned on the shower. While I waited for the water to heat up I rummaged in the cabinet for a razor, pulled two fluffy towels from the shelf and then stripped out of my clothes, leaving them in a pile on the floor as I stepped under the hot spray of water.

I did as Erin said, shaving my legs, underarms and my bikini line. When I stepped out of the bathroom with one towel around my body and another around my hair, Erin pointed me to the hairdryer and then disappeared into the bathroom. I dried my skin quickly before slipping on the new underwear set that Erin had picked out for me – back lace matching bra and panties – before getting to work on drying my hair.

Erin came out of the shower quickly, and I couldn’t help but notice that even soaking wet and with no makeup on she still managed
to look amazing. She got that from her mother.

“Pull your hair back,” She ordered while casually slipping into her own new underwear set “We’re going makeup first,”

Within ten minutes my face was party ready. My eyes popped with the eye makeup, my lips had never looked so full now that they
were perfectly pouty with red lipstick.

“You look…” Erin smiled widely “Ugh, I should be your own personal makeup artist from now on, you look even more amazing than
normal when you wear real makeup!” She gushed, talking to me in the mirror while I turned my head from side to side, admiring her
own. I looked airbrushed, there wasn’t a damn imperfection to my face. I caught Erin’s eye in the mirror and smiled brightly at her.

“What’s next?” I asked.

I couldn’t stop looking at myself in the full length mirror in Erin’s bedroom. I looked like me, but a completely different, confident
and… gorgeous, me.

My hair was styled into its natural waves but with a little added volume, and my outfit looked perfectly put together, and fit me
amazingly.

“You ready?” Erin asked, stepping into view in the mirror, handing me my clutch bag.

“Yeah,” I nodded slowly, looking away from myself to admire my cousins beauty for a few moments.

“You look amazing,” She beamed.

“I don’t look like myself, that’s why.” I chuckled.

“Wrong,” She smiled “You look like my gorgeously confident little cousin, who, for one night isn’t going to be picked on for being
different,” I smiled at her “I did a good job here tonight,”

My phone beeped from inside my clutch bag, so I quickly rummaged around inside until I grabbed it, pulling it out to see a new
message from Jimmy.

You’re definitely coming tonight, right? – J

“He wants you,” Erin sang, peeking over my shoulder to look at my phone with me “Tonight, he’s going to be freakin’ forced to talk
to you.”

Of course, I’ll see you soon. – H

Third Person

When Hannah and Erin got to the party it was already in full swing. More than half of the school had already turned up and the whole house was practically bouncing with the music playing so loudly inside.

Hannah had entered the house with a confident air about her, ready to locate Jimmy and use a few tricks that Erin had given her on the way over. Now, she was feeling discouraged after finding him with a girl from school, Samantha, hanging from him.

The second Erin and Hannah had walked into Matt’s living room he knew that taking Brian’s advice had been a horrible idea. Brian was a ladies man, always sleeping around and getting any girl he wanted, so when he’d offered some advice to Jimmy he’d thought it would be a good idea to take it. Now, he remembered how different Hannah was from everybody that Brian ever wanted to get with, so this definitely wasn’t the way to go about it. He needed to give her his undivided attention, not this Samantha chick who’d already slept with almost every guy around.

Erin was quick to notice Hannah’s confidence slipping, so she whispered a couple of other tips into her ear, and Hannah felt her self-consciousness slip away instead and her confidence snuck back with even more.

Beautiful Dangerous by Slash, featuring Fergie started to play through the sound system, and Hannah found her body reacting to the beat. Her hips loosened, her shoulders dropped and her beer hung loosely from her hand as she started to sway her hips in time with the music. Her neck relaxed next and started to move on its own accord, swinging her hair in front of her face before her hands slid into the full waves and pushed it back out of her eyes as she locked her gaze on Jimmy, who looked stunned as he watched her dancing.

Most of the people who had been gathered in the living room were moving with the music, too, including Erin who was moving Zack with her playfully.

Hannah jumped a little when she felt someone place their hands on her hips. When she looked down, she recognized them pretty quickly and then she looked over her shoulder to see Matt smirking down at her with a glint in his eye. She kept swinging her hips and covered his hands with her smaller ones, and that’s when she heard it.

She could hear everything that Matt was thinking – what he was thinking about doing to her. Kissing her, taking her up to his room where he would ‘ruin’ her and make her forget her own name.

Hannah quickly threw her elbow back into Matt’s ribs, causing him to jump away from her and double over slightly, calling after her as she rushed away from him and out into the back yard for some fresh air.

Jimmy

I’d felt my rage building from the second Matt put his hands on Hannah, but she wasn’t fighting him so there was nothing that I could do about it without looking like a huge jerk, so I watched them closely while Samantha struggled to get my attention onto her.

The second Hannah elbowed Matt and rushed off, I saw Erin hurrying after her and I strode quickly to Matt.

“What the fuck did you do?!” I yelled at him over the music, shoving him a bit when he didn’t answer me “Matt, what the fuck did you
do to her?!”

“Nothing!” He yelled back, looking surprised “I didn’t do anything, we were just dancing!”

I clapped him on the shoulder and headed in the direction I’d seen Hannah and Erin go off in, and quickly found them in the fairly empty back yard, sitting on the swing set together. I made my way over to them quickly, smiling kindly as I reached them.

“Hey,” I breathed, crouching down in front of Hannah, glancing at Erin “You alright?”

“Yeah,” She shrugged, smiling the smallest smile I’d seen “I just, uh, didn’t feel too good.”

“You alright if I head back inside?” Erin smirked at Hannah, a strange look in her eye.

“Yeah,” Hannah nodded “Go on, I’ll be back in in a few minutes,” She promised, waving her cousin away.

“What happened back there?” I asked after a moment as I took a seat on the swing next to her where Erin had just been.

“Nothing,” Hannah insisted, waving her hand at me “I just… I don’t come to parties, and I certainly don’t dance with guys, so it was a little too much for me and I just needed the air.”

“Well, you were certainly in a rush,” I laughed, swinging a little “You got Matt pretty good.”

She seemed to physically cringe, and looked at me with a guilty look on her face.

“I’ll apologize to him when I get back in there,” She promised.

“Do you need to go back in there just yet?” I asked.

“No,” She shook her head “I imagine you do, though, I’m sure Samantha’s missing you.”

“She can miss me all she wants,” I rolled my eyes, stopping the swing and looking closely at Hannah’s face “I’m spending time out here with the most interesting girl at the party.

I swore, in that moment, Hannah’s smile alone could have lit the whole damn neighbourhood. I’d never seen her look more beautiful.
