The Waiting Game

Kimmie stepped to take her turn to serve in the game of volleyball they were all being forced to play in gym class today. She really didn't care much for the sport. She tossed the ball into the air just as her phone started to vibrate in her pocket. Instead of hitting the ball, she let it fall strait to the floor, bouncing a few times. "Kimmie!" Coach Sanders called after her as she made a beeline for the gym doors, fishing her phone out of her pocket. Matt went after her when she ignored him, disappearing through the door. He told the rest of the students to continue on with their games, before following her out the door.

Kimmie's back was to him, and Matt was about to say her name again to get her attention, but the sound of her voice stopped him. "Tammy?" she questioned almost desperately into a phone. "Hey there, hot stuff." he heard the familiar voice, muffled through the receiver. Matt turned, walking back into the gym, and let her talk in private, but stayed, leaned against the retracted bleachers by the door, waiting for her return.

"God it's good to hear your voice." Kimmie sighed out as she leaned against one of the lockers in the hall.

"It's good to hear yours too. How have things been?"

"Not as bad a you would think. There was an incident my first day back at school, but-"

"What did those cum guzzling gutter sluts do?" Kimmie let out a small chuckle, and shook her head. She wasn't afraid to tell her. Tammy wouldn't care. "They trashed your old locker, and wrote some nasty things, but Aaron and Leah ratted them out, and they got suspended for a few days."

"Ha! You mean Leah actually grew a set, and stood up to those bitches?"

"Yeah, but things have been kind of weird since."

"What do you mean weird?" Kimmie let out a sigh, and ran her fingers through her hair. "I don't know. People have been talking to me more, and them less. It's just weird. It's like there's a shift happening." She really didn't know how to explain it. Ever since that first day back, people have been saying "hi" as they pass her in the hall, or trying to create small talk with her during class. As the days pass, more and more people show up at her table to eat lunch with her. Aaron is really the only one she talks to though. She just didn't know what to think of all of it, and wasn't really ready to let anyone else in.

"That is weird. Just be careful who you trust. Did you get out of your mom's house yet?" Another sigh escaped Kimmie's lips, "No."

"What!? Kimmie, what the hell? Why are you still there?"

"Because she hasn't touched a drop since everything happened."

"Really? Now that's weird."

"Yeah, well apparently finding out I almost died was the slap in the face she needed. She's really been trying. Even found a job. I'm going to give her a chance to change."

"You are way more forgiving than I am." Tammy chuckled a little. "I didn't say I've forgiven her yet. We're still a ways away from that, but she deserves at least one chance."

"Not really, but I'm not going to argue, she's your mom." Kimmie nodded a little but didn't reply. "What about you? What took so long to call me?" she pretended to sound angry, hearing another chuckle from her friend. "People around here are bitches."

"Tammy?" Kimmie questioned with a knowing tone. "Fiiiine, maybe I was the one being the bitch." This time it was Kimmie's turn to chuckle. "So it's your fault." she teased. Tammy let out a huff, "Nooo. If they would just leave me alone, things would be just peachy around here." she said matter of fact. "Or you could just be nice."

"Where's the fun in that? I don't need any friends around here, that I'm never going to see again. I don't need their foster families. I don't need their doctors. All I need them to do is leave me alone until I'm eighteen, and I'll be on my merry way." Kimmie smiled, and shook her head even though her stubborn friend couldn't see it.

"Don't shake your head at me, woman." Hearing the smile in Tammy's voice, Kimmie couldn't help but laugh. "I miss you." And just like that, the sadness washed over them. "I miss you too." There was a slight pauses before Tammy let out a sigh, "I have to go. They only gave me five minutes, and the pencil pusher behind the desk is tapping his watch." Kimmie frowned a little, but soon turned into a small smile when she hear her say something to someone else, "Oh, but I love you." Must have gotten a dirty look. "I'll call you Monday." Tammy said, coming back to her. "Okay."

"Um, can you do me a favor before I go?"

"Yeah sure, anything."

"Can you tell Mr. Haner thank you?"

"For what?"

"He'll know. I don't have time to explain it. I have to go." Kimmie nodded, "Okay." she let out in a sigh. "Love ya, hot stuff."

"I love you too."

"Goodbye."

"Bye." and with a click she was gone. Kimmie slipped her phone back into her pocket, and slid down the locker till she hit the floor. She just got to talk to her, why did she miss her even more now? Five minutes wasn't long enough. She still had so much more she wanted to talk about. With a heavy sigh, Kimmie pushed herself up off the floor, and went back to gym class. She went through the door, and almost jumped out of her skin at the sound of Coach Sanders voice. "Finished?" he asked with an amused little smirk.

"You scared the crap out of me," she said, and he chuckled, "Yeah, sorry for walking out like that." she told him, and Matt just shrugged it off. "Don't worry about it. Is that the first time you've gotten to talked to her?" Kimmie nodded, her sad eyes looking to the floor. She looked back up, meeting Coach Sanders soft hazel eyes when she felt him rest an arm across her shoulders. "Keep your head up," he told her as he escorted her back to her team, "maybe you'll get lucky, and see her again a lot sooner than you think." Kimmie looked at him a little confused. Why did he sound like he knew something she didn't. "I hope you're right." she said. "I usually am." Matt told her with a slightly arrogant smile. She shook her head, letting out a small giggle at his cockiness, that only made him smile wider. "Now hurry up. Your team's getting slaughtered without you."

The bell rang ending class, and Brian leaned back in his chair, glad fifth period was over. He hated seeing her empty desk everyday. He didn't look forward to this class anymore. Hopefully he can get approved to take her in, and things could return to normal. Brian rubbed his tired eyes, and let out a sigh when he felt a presence next to him. He looked up, annoyance instantly washing over his face. "What do you want, Miss Green?" he asked, shuffling through some papers on his desk, just trying to look busy.

She's been back from her suspension for two days, and hasn't said a word to him. Too bad it didn't last the rest of the school year. "I, um just wanted to apologize." Scarlette said softly, looking shamefully at the floor. "I'm not the one you need to apologize to." Brian said sharp, not even bothering to look at her. "Yes you are," she continued, placing a hand on his to stop his shuffling, "it's obviously upset you," Brian finally met her eyes, his face screaming, no shit dumbass, "I know you reported everything, and it's kind of personal, so I'm sorry." she finished, and for a moment, he almost thought she was being sincere. That was until he felt her hand start to move up his arm. "Is there anyway I can make it up to you? Anything at all?" she asked, looking at him through her lashes, and biting her lip a little.

Brian yanked his arm away from her touch. Was this bitch for real right now? Was she really that dense? "Anything?" he questioned, fighting the strong urge to go off on her right now. Where was Tammy when he needed her. You got her sent away, remember Haner. Guess you'll have to resort to asshole mode. "Alright," he started, seeing her eyes light up a little.

"I want you to turn around, and walk out that door. I want you to never speak to me, unless school related, ever again. Get this through your thick head. You are my student, and I am your teacher. Quite frankly, you and everything about you disgusts me. You're not worth loosing my job for. You're not worth going to jail for, and if this doesn't stop, I'll have you kicked out of my class for harassment. Now get out." Brian told her, pointing to the door.

It was clear on Scarlette's face that she was extremely offended. However, it was clear on Brian's face that he didn't give a fuck. Only further proving it when he kicked his feet up onto his desk. "Bye." he said crossing his arms. Scarlette let out a huff, but turned and walked away. "A little girl like you couldn't satisfy a man like me anyway." he took one last shot with a slightly arrogant smile. She paused, like she was going to say something, but instead kept walking, bumping Kimmie's shoulder as she passed her in the doorway.

Kimmie rolled her eyes, and Brian immediately put his feet back on the floor. He felt his heart start to race as she approached his desk. There's only one reason why she would be here. She didn't have his class this year. She took it last year. There was only one reason why. "What's her problem?" Kimmie asked once she reached him. "She's a bitch." he said, getting a small chuckle. "I knew that already." she grinned, getting her own chuckle. "What can I do for you?" Brian asked, ignoring all the other students coming in for their last class of the day. He was trying to hide his excitement about hearing some news on Tammy. That's why she's here right? What else would it be?

"Tammy called me today," Kimmie started, and Brian couldn't hold back his smile, "she wanted me to thank you. I'm not really sure why." she kind of shrugged a little. "I sent a friend, a psychiatrist to her. I heard she wasn't really cooperating with theirs." he explained. She must have talked to him. He was going to have to call Johnny when school was over. "Oh, well you just have all kinds of friends don't you?" Kimmie smiled a little, remember that Officer Baker was one of his friends. Brian let out another small chuckle, "I'm just trying to help."

"I know, and she does too, so thank you. From both of us." Even though Kimmie missed her like crazy, she couldn't deny that things have gotten a little better. She's not worrying about her all the time. She isn't fighting with her mother all the time. It hasn't been as bad as she thought it would be. Brian gave her a nod just as the final bell, warning class was going to start, rang. "I better go. Have a good weekend." she said before turning to leave. "You too." he said as she left, receiving a small wave in acknowledgement before she disappeared through the door.

Brian let out a sigh before standing from his chair, and starting his last class of the day. It couldn't have gone fast enough for him. He wanted to see how things went with Johnny and Tammy. Finally the bell rang, ending the day. Brian practically rushed students out of his class, so he could lock up, and get out of there. Ten minutes later he found himself in his car, phone in hand. The line rang three times before Johnny's voice floated through the speaker, "Dude, I'm not even home yet." he snickered. "How did things go?" Brian asked, ignoring his friend's smartass greeting. "Not too bad. She wasn't shy with the short jokes," Johnny started to explain, hearing a chuckle on the other line, "but she agreed to see me again on Monday. We'll go from there. I want her to get comfortable with me before having her commit to regular sessions."

Brian nodded even though Johnny couldn't see. "Was there something else you wanted?" the shorter man questioned, knowingly with a smile in his voice. Brian let out a sigh, deciding not to get irritated with his know-it-allness. "How is she doing?"

"Not as bad as you would think. Yeah, she's not being very cooperative, but it would be easier going if they would stop shoving the foster families down her throat. She doesn't want anything to do with them even if they found one in Huntington Beach."

"She doesn't want to come home?" Brian asked at a whisper. Johnny could hear the disappointment in his voice, and knew what he was doing. Questioning if he was wasting his time, or wondering if it would all just piss her off again. "No, not that. She doesn't want to live with someone she doesn't know. Which is why her social worker and I are going to write letters of recommendation for you."

"What? Really? Oh my God, Johnny that would help out so much." Brian felt relief flow through him. "It's not a problem. She knows you, which is what they prefer, and she trusts you. Which as her doctor, I prefer." he said, a wide smile on his face. Brian leaned back in his seat, and felt, for the first time in awhile, a good mood coming on. He had a real chance now. Hopefully everything will work out, and he can finally make everything right, like he wanted too. "Thanks man, I appreciate it. I don't really know what to say. I know I give you a hard time, but I do love you man. You just irritate me sometimes." he said, a grin coming out when Johnny laughed at him. "It's not a problem, really. I'm happy to help, but I gotta go man. My exit is coming up."

Brian thanked him again, and the two said their goodbyes. He tossed his phone in the seat next to him, and started his car. Nothing could wipe the smile off his face as he drove home. He was trying not to get too excited. Nothing was set in stone yet, but he couldn't seem to keep it from building. Sitting at home alone sure wasn't doing anything to ease him. He tried to get some grading done, but he just couldn't concentrate. There's so many things running through his head that he could be doing to prepare, and eventually found himself digging out empty boxes in his basement.

Brian made is way upstairs to his guest room. Maybe he was getting ahead of himself a little, but he couldn't just sit around. He had to do something. Brian started with the decorations on the wall. He never really cared much for this room. Michelle decorated it, and it was a little girly for him. He didn't have to sleep in here though, so he just left it. Tammy could put up whatever she wanted. The walls looked dingy. Should he paint them? What color would she want? That was something he would probably have to get out of Kimmie. Which meant that was a task that would have to wait until he knew for sure she was coming. He really didn't want to get either girls hopes up. Even though he was doing it to himself right now.

Soon the walls were bare, and Brian moved onto the clutter scattered on the nightstands and dresser. He tossed everything into a trash bag, not caring what he was throwing away. He never came in here, so whatever it was has been forgotten about, and obviously not needed. The closet and dresser were full of clothes he didn't wear anymore along with some of the guys clothes they've left over there. Looks like it was all getting donated. If they wanted it, they should have taken it home one of the thousands of times they've been there.

By the time he was done, the sky grew dark, and the room was left with nothing but a bed and furniture. All the sheets and blankets were removed, and thrown into the washer, so he could put clean ones on. Brian loaded up his car with the boxes of clothes and decorations that he was going to take to the local thrift store tomorrow, so he could just jump in and go. The only thing that eventually stopped his cleaning and preparations was the growl that erupted from his stomach. It was getting late, and he decided to make something to eat, and turn in for the night. There wasn't much more that he could do anyway, not until he talked to Kimmie, and that was going to have to wait. He hated waiting.

The days passed slowly. It almost seemed like they were getting longer and longer as each one passed. By the end of the next week, Brian was sure that time was against him. He's been glued to his mailbox since Johnny told him the letters had been sent. Now he was playing the waiting game, and loosing. When Wednesday of week two rolled around, he was starting to loose hope. Everyday he checked, and everyday nothing. He walked into his house, mail in hand, and plopped down on the couch.

Crap, crap, and more crap. The only thing of interest to him was a large manila envelope from one of the literature magazines he sent Tammy's poems to. There was a prerelease copy of their next issue with one of them in the amateur section, and a letter thanking him for the submission. It wasn't what he was waiting for, but it was still good news to him. Maybe he could use this as an excuse to go see her. Did he need an excuse? Brian let out a sigh, and got up to get a beer, but stopped when a something on the floor caught his eye.

The little pink paper was face down, and when he picked it up, Brian's eyes went wide. He had something certified waiting at the post office for him. This must have fallen out of the stack of mail when he came in. He ran out the door, and to his car, not bothering to lock up. He had to get there before they closed. His heart started to race with excitement as he borderline speed down the road. He was really hoping it was what he's been waiting for, and made it to the post office with fifteen minutes to spare. Although the line made him internally groan. Why did he always have to wait?

Ten minutes later, he was at the front of the line practically bouncing in his shoes as he waited for the next available clerk. Finally he was handing the lady behind the desk the little pink paper, and she disappeared for a moment, returning with the letter in hand. Brian quickly signed for it, and had it torn open before he even got out of the post office. A large smile spread as he read it's contents. "Fuck yeah!" he let out excited, and earning a few weird looks from the people standing around.

Brian said a quick apology before bolting out the door. He hopped in his car, but didn't go strait home. He had a stop to make. "Johnny!" he called out, just walking into his friends house. "In here!" he heard his voice from the living room. Brian wasted no time to walk in, and grab the shorter man's face, planting a wet one on his cheek. "Ewe, what was that for?" Johnny pretended to be disgusted as he wiped his cheek. "I got approved." Brian's smile was wide as he shoved the letter in his face.

Johnny read over the letter, his own smile coming out. He was truly happy for Brian and Tammy. After he seen her that Monday, she agreed to see him twice a week. It was still slow going getting her to completely open up, but they were making progress. "Congratulations. I'm glad everything worked out." he said handing the letter back to Brian. "I couldn't have done it without you," he said putting an arm around Johnny's shoulders, "so we're going out to celebrate, and tonight all your drinks are on me." he said, getting a chuckle from him. "That's what I'm talkin' about." Johnny said with a grin. "Call the guys. We're tearin' up the town tonight."

Notes

See I said I would have an update this week. It may be the end of the week, but it's still done :)
And as your writer, I assure you that what Brian said to Scarlette won't come back to bite him in the ass....or maybe it will.....might bite Tammy in the ass....or both....who knows :o.....I do ;D

@Kimmie
This totally made up for the wait :)

First Brian. He's just not use to having to hide something like this like Tammy has. She's had her crush for awhile and is use to hiding secrets and actions. Some of what he does is completely innocent, just trying to make her feel better, but the other he just doesn't know how to deal with or control it. But like I said in a previous comment...someone is about to gum up the works.

As for Tammy turning on the bitch switch with Kimmie, she knows she fucked up. First day back was an uncomfortable shock to her and she took it out on the wrong person. But I think the little pep talk she got from her favorite teacher will help.

And finally Matt. What can I say about this poor broken man? It's going to take some time for him to get over this. The love of his life is gone now and he just doesn't know how to deal. It's not something someone just gets over. Eventually he's going to see though that there's someone else out there that can love him just as much if not more :)

always love you long comments Hot Stuff <3

OK first, I'm sorry I'm "sooooo late" with my comment ;-) :P
Here goes! Get ready!

Brian, my friend, you are getting onto thin ice. Getting in between a funny back and forth between friends? Asking for a HotStuff (don't be jealous of the girl friends man, not cool), checking to hear if you are still hot? Putting your hand on her thigh? HOLDING HER FUCKING HAND?!!?! Brian, you are soooo deep in right now. And you fucking know it. If you really aren't ready to admit yet, you shouldn't even get in everything I mentioned before and try to pretend to be a grown up man who doesn't have a quickly developing crush on his fosterchild. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for him to fall of the wagon, but for the storysake and the "it's all wrong"-sake... you should at least pretend :P

Okay, I can skip the school stuff right? I mean, she doesn't want to move away from Brian anyway and everything else was just.. well.. maybe she'll make it anyway, but who cares... I have more important stuff to get to.

For the first time this story I kinda didn't like Tammy. She was selfish instead of supporting her friend. I don't really like Aaron, but for now he is nice to Kimmie and so are his friends. I get all the issues Tammy always had, but she had no right to go off on Kimmie like that. That's just mean. I know I know, she had her reasons. I know she's been through a lot, but I still didn't like it. Kimmie didn't deserve it.

Oh, one thing more about the school day... I do love all the sarcastic remarks. But you know... that's your writing. You make it seem so effortless and I know it's not, but just take the compliment, okay? You make it seem so so damn lifely, and I really feel like being there. Like standing there watching the scene. It's amazing.

Allright, let's get to my man Matt. My heart breaks everytime you write about him. I know it's too soon to get better, but I really want it to. I hate seeing him hurt like this. Trying his best over all his grief. I really can't stand seeing him like this. But I love how Kimmie knows this baby stuff. How she so easily gets the baby to be quiet and calm. And what I like most about it is that she isn't solving it for Matt, but teaching him how. But damn, just fix the man soon, I can't take it.
And here's a small peek of the fangirl.. I can't wait for Kimmie to spend more time with Matt and Aiden, taking care of the small guy.

I hope this comment makes up for me being not here on the first day. I'll just end with what I always do.. Please, Please, Please write! I'm begging you, this story makes my day, my week, my life. I want to read more now things are looking up!

Love you lekker ding! <3
