Chapter 2- The Search

I convinced my adopted parents to tell me who my birth parents are and where I was born and where my birth family may still be living. Apparently I was born in Huntington Beach California. Ya know, I've always wanted to live in California. Now's my chance to make that happen. I've packed all my things away in boxes and am going to have it all shipped out to me once I'm settled out in California. Whether it be my own place or with my birth parents. All I'm taking with me to California are clothes, shoes, and other accessories. All my money is in my bank, so I don't need to worry about that. I'm flying out there, so I'll have my car flown out to me separately. Hopefully it'll be there by the time I get there. I'm flying into LA and then I'll drive to Huntington. I'll figure out where to start looking once I'm out there. My flight leaves in a couple of hours. I'm nervous, but happy at the same time. I finally get to meet my twin brother. I'm really hoping my birth parents accept me and don't throw me out on the street over not having me for 18 years. I've already talked to Jay about me leaving. He's upset, but very understanding. It was easy for him to let me go because like I said, we weren't serious yet. It also made it easier for me. As for my adopted parents, they're upset to see me go, but are happy that I'm actually trying to find my birth parents. I just hope they can live on without me. Even though I'm not their biological daughter, they still love and care about me.

The time for me to head to the airport finally rolls around. I say goodbye to my adopted parents and thank them one last time for all they've done for me. I tell them I'll keep in touch to let them know how I'm doing and they're very happy to hear me say it. I put all my bags in the trunk of the cab and get in the backseat, waving goodbye to my parents as the cab driver drives away.

It doesn't take long to get to the airport, so I grab my bags and head inside to get them checked in. Once they're checked in and I'm through security, I head straight for my gate. I sit there silently for quite a while, probably an hour or so, before they finally announce the passengers can board the plane. I grab my carry on bag and board the plane. I find my section and put my carry on bag in the overhead compartment before taking my seat and buckling up. I've got a long flight ahead of me, so I brought a book with me to read. I've decided on Stephen King's 'The Shining'. I've heard it's a very good book, so I decided to check it out. Plus, I'm a lover of a good horror story. Finally after everyone boards the plane and the flight attendants do their normal routine, the captain announces we're ready for lift off.

After we've lifted off, I grab my book and start reading. Every so often a flight attendant will come by asking if I need anything to eat or drink. I casually tell them I'm fine for now and turn my attention back to the book. After a bit of reading, my eyes start hurting, so I close the book and rest my eyes for a while, hoping to catch a short nap before we land.

Finally after what seems like hours, the captain announces that we've landed at LAX. Here's to hoping my car is here. After the plane's stopped at the terminal, I grab my carry on bag and exit the plane, then head to the baggage claim to grab my bags. Once I've got everything, I go to a customer service desk to see where my car would be. The lady at the desk tells me it'll be at parking garage A, but I have to collect my car keys from the kiosk in the garage. I head to where she tells me and go through this long process to get my keys. Finally I do, so I set out to find my car. I find it parked by the exit of the parking garage. Hey that's easy for me. I put all my bags in the trunk before getting in my car and heading off to Huntington Beach

Once I get to Huntington Beach, I check into a hotel to stay at for a few nights while I figure everything out. I first need to figure out where to start first. Huntington Beach looks pretty big, so I can't just go house to house asking people. Perhaps I could go to the police station or talk to someone at the hospital. I'm sure there's gotta be some record of me being born there. I'll start with the hospital and if I get nothing there, I'll check with the police station. I ask the concierge down in the hotel lobby how I can get to the hospital and she points me in the general direction, explaining how to get there. I thank her and head on my way. When I get there, I head inside and head to the front desk where a woman who looks to be in her fifties is looking through paperwork.

“Hi. I was just wondering if you guys keep birth records? I'm looking for my birth parents.”
“Uh yes we do actually. When exactly were you born?”
“My adopted parents told me it was on July 31st 1981. I have a twin brother too, but I don't know his name.”

The woman kinda stares at me with a look that makes me a bit uncomfortable.

“What's your name, sweetie?”
“Uh Becca. My name's Becca. I'm not sure if that's the name my birth parents gave me though.”
“My God you're alive. How are you alive?”
“What?”
“You weren't supposed to live this long. You had a severe medical condition that was supposed to kill you after a few months of being born.”
“Well, here I am.”
“It's a miracle!”

The lady comes from behind the desk and pulls me into a hug. I look down at her and raise an eyebrow.

“I was your nurse. I helped deliver you. I never thought I'd see you again.”
“Oh. Do you still have contact with my parents?”
“I don't have their telephone numbers, but I do have their address. Oh my God you look so much like Matthew.”
“Is that my brother?”
“Yes. My God he's going to be so happy to see you. He was raised thinking you died.”
“Oh wow.”

She goes back behind the desk and starts writing something down. She hands me a slip of paper with an address on it.

“Usually I'm not supposed to do this, but you're an exception. Now go find your family.”
“Thank you.”
“Good luck.”

I smile at her and head back out to my car. I take a deep breath before looking at the address and starting my car. Here comes a life changing experience.
