Lost
Chapter 1- The Truth
Welp, today's the day. My 18th birthday. I'm finally a legal adult and can go out and do whatever I want. I'm actually excited because I've been saving up money to buy my own place. Nothing too big, just an apartment or condo. Something I can afford on my own. I've got a full time job, so I should be set with money until I go off to college. I'm planning on taking prerequisite classes first. Maybe one or two classes to start off with so I'm not too overwhelmed at first. Then once I'm used to those classes, I'll add another. As for the money situation for college, my parents said they'd help me out a bit with that. I've got no worries at all.
Right now, I'm getting changed into something nice. My boyfriend's taking me out to dinner tonight, so I gotta look decent. I'm debating on my charcoal black dress that hugs my figure immensely or my strapless crimson red dress that not only hugs my figure, but shows a bit of cleavage as well. I try on both dresses and look in the mirror. After doing so, I decide on the black dress so I don't look too trampy. After I'm dressed, I put on a bit of makeup and curl my hair. My hair is a pomegranate red and when it's curled, it flows naturally down my shoulders. I always get complimented on it, which is a good thing because most people trash talk red hair.
“Becca, Jay's here.”
“Tell him I'll be right down.”
“Alright.”
I smile at myself in the mirror before grabbing my purse and heading downstairs. My boyfriend Jay is waiting by the door, talking with my dad.
“Ready.”
He looks over and smiles.
“Wow you look amazing.”
“Thank you.”
I blush and walk over to him, letting him take my hand.
“We won't be out too late, sir. I'll have her back by 8 o'clock the latest.”
“That's fine. You two have a good time.”
“We will.”
We say our goodbyes to my parents and head out to his car. We get in and he starts driving.
“You really do look amazing, babe.”
“Thank you. I wanted to look decent for my birthday.”
“Well you did a great job,” he chuckles.
“Thank you.”
Jay and I have only been together for 3 months. We're not too serious quite yet. We haven't had sex, which I'm pretty happy about because I want to make sure we're going to be together a while before doing so.
We reach the restaurant and head inside. We're seated pretty quickly and it doesn't take long for the waiter to wait on us. There are a lot of great choices on the menu, but I decide on the Chicken Cacciatore. Jay just decides on a steak meal. Kinda typical if you ask me, but I'm not the one eating it so hey who am I to complain. We sit and chat for a while, eating our dinner, and have an overall good time. It's nice to get out and have a nice dinner once in a while. I hope we can do this more often. Finally, we finish our meals and Jay pays the bill. He leaves a tip and we leave. He drops me off at home, but not before giving me a goodnight kiss. I smile and grab my purse before getting out of the car.
“Thanks for taking me out. I had a great time.”
“Me too.”
I smile and close the car door, watching him drive off. I head inside and head to the living room where my parents are watching TV.
“I'm home.
“Oh great. Can we talk?”
“Uh sure.”
I smile and sit down across from them on the sofa. They both exchange a glance before looking over at me. Uh okay then. Whatever this is, it better be good. I don't like the looks on their faces.
“We have to tell you something, Becca. We've kept it in for so long because we wanted to wait for the opportune moment to tell you. Now that you're 18, it's the perfect time.”
“Well? What is it?”
My mom gives my dad a look before sighing.
“You're not our real daughter.”
“Excuse me?” Was not expecting that.
“We adopted you after your parents had you. Not only that, but you've got a twin brother out there somewhere. Your birth parents were told that you had a very severe medical condition where you weren't going to live long. They couldn't bare to see their child die, so they gave you up. They don't know you're alive.”
“You're not fucking serious. So you're telling me that I've been living a lie my entire life? How the fuck am I still alive?”
“Your body fought off whatever was supposed to kill you. You're a miracle baby.”
“Why did you guys take me? Why would you want to care for a dying baby?”
“We didn't want you to be taken somewhere where they'd keep you locked up, so we adopted you. We're sorry it has to come to this, but you deserve to know.”
