Hostage

Zack’s POV

I grabbed Alicia’s bag and hurried after them, I saw Matt also walking towards the entrance.
I turned towards him.
“Man, better stay here. I will have a look at her.” I told him and Matt narrowed his eyes on me.
“What do you mean you will have a look at her, you don’t know nothing.” Matt shot back, taking me off guard.
“What’s wrong with you? I just want you not to worry. Better get back to the party, bro and have a drink or something…” I shook my head at him and saw Brad already starting the car.
“Don’t tell me what to do.” I heard Matt murmur standing in the doorway looking after me when I took the passenger seat, I turned around and saw Alicia had calmed down a little bit.
Brad drove away, I saw in the back Val walking towards Matt laying her arms around him, resting her head on his chest.
Then they were gone from my view, Alicia didn’t seem to notice anything.
Caroline was rubbing her hand and talking quietly to her, Alicia’s eyes were closed.
I sighed and thought about what we heard, they tried to rape her?
God, not only that being abducted was too much already and her fighting her illness… or not even knowing if she was ill, but she also had another traumatic experience.
And now not only Matt knew about it but the whole fucking party…
I could imagine Alicia being overwhelmed with the attention she got finally and not about something pleasant so I was completely on her side when she said she wanted to leave.

I thought if Caroline and Brad knew about this but as it seems, they didn’t.
Should I handle her differently now?
Am I supposed to be more careful now how I touch or talk to her?
Do I need to pay more attention?
Does she want to talk about it with me? About what happened to her?
Was I strong enough to hear it and help her with it?
What we needed to do was, to bring her to go to the police, to add this to her statement.
But would she want to do this?

“Alright, we are here.” Brad announced.
“Bring me home.” Alicia said quietly.
“Honey, I don’t think that this would be a good idea. You will sleep at our home, tonight.”
“If you don’t bring me home, I will drive home by myself.” Alicia said and her eyes popped open, meeting mine.
“Honey, I think-” Caroline started again.
“NO!” Alicia turned to Caroline and then back to me.
“Zack? Please!” Alicia pleaded.
“I’ll bring you home.” I got out of the car and opened the back door helping Alicia out.
“Zack, I don’t think that she should be alone tonight. I think that it would be better if-”
Caroline started but I held my hand up and leaned a little towards her.
“I never said that I would leave her alone, alright?”
Caroline nodded finally and then walked over to Alicia.
“Honey, if you need me just call, whenever you want. Day or Night, you know it, right?”
“I know… thank you.” Alicia nodded and stood near my car.
I said my goodbye to Brad and Caroline and climbed into my car.

Matt’s POV

I stood for a couple of minutes outside, Val was by my side now.
I closed my eyes and let my head sink down on my chest.
Fuck!
I never meant to blab this out loud for everyone to hear, that was just a bad timing.
I knew that Alicia must feel embarrassed now.
But it was not her fault, never her fault… I had told her that before and I needed to tell her that now.
But I guess I was one of the last persons that she wanted to see right now.
“One of the abductors tried to-” Val swallowed thickly.
“I don’t wanna talk about that.”
“Is she… I mean… did they?” Val asked again and I shook my head.
“One saved her and brought her back to me. I couldn’t help her, Val! It’s my fault.”
I looked down on Val’s small figure and saw tears glistening in her eyes and suddenly I felt a wet spot on my own cheek.
I whisked it away with my thumb, staring at it…
“Oh babe, no!” Val tugged me close and I tried to take some strength from her. Needed strength now myself.
“Come on, walk a bit with me.” Val grabbed my hand in hers and we went away from Brian’s house, down the street.
“Why would you think it’s your fault, Matty?” Val asked quietly.
“They told her, Caroline were there to talk to her, they played a trick on us. I thought that it was a trap but I didn’t stop her to go with them… He chained me and took Alicia away from me.” I closed my eyes, hearing Alicia scream for help in my head. Screaming my name, begging me to help her…but I couldn’t.
“And then?” Val asked squeezing my hand a little more.
“Then I heard her scream… she begged me to help her. I knew what he wanted to do to her, had tried to touch her before… I should have never let her get out of the room.”
Val dragged me down on a bench and I sat beside her, looking in the distance.
“He made her say what he was doing with her… because he knew I would be upset… I tried to get away from the chains, tried to help her, but I couldn’t…” I felt Val’s soft hands on my cheek and realized another tear had escaped.
“Don’t Matt… She is safe. And you are safe. Don’t blame yourself, babe. You did everything you could. You always do, that’s why I love you so much.”
I couldn’t look at her, because I wasn’t feeling that way, I felt like I had failed her.
Again all the memories before my eyes… I had suppressed them these last week… but now, talking to Alicia, seeing her and realizing, how bad she was still feeling bringing something like that up, got to me more than I had thought, when I asked her the question.
“Matt, don’t shut me out. Let me tell you that, Alicia will know you did everything you could to protect her in that situation. And if some asshole played a trick on you, it’s not your fault, babe.
The played a game, these guys are psychos. You couldn’t have done anything better. You two got out of there and it is okay to feel down, it is okay to cry. If you have to just do it babe. I am here for you. I am always here for you. We all are, all your friends are here… We won’t judge you. We will always have your back.” Val finished and finally I looked at her, a small smile on my lips.
“Thanks, Val. I guess that’s what I needed to hear. Thank you, for being here…” I smiled and looked down, she was still holding my hand in hers, her thumb caressing my skin.
“Always, Matt.” She smiled as well and leaned towards me kissing me.
She took me off guard, but I didn’t pull away, I laid my arms around her, pulling her closer.
