I Lost Me Long Ago

Not a Drop of Dignity

Josh and I became close about six months after I had been working for him. After three months he learned that I was living in a homeless shelter and very determinedly demanded that I move into the space above his garage.

It took him almost three weeks to renovate it so it was livable. Adding in central air and heating, a bathroom, and a kitchen area. He also painted- but refused to pick the color out himself. At first he started by just asking me what color I would like it painted.

When I refused to pick the color he spent the next two days trying to figure out my favorite color. Eventually I folded, if he was anything at all he was determined. Something I admire about him. I told him yellow, dark purple, and light grey; where my favorite colors. From there he would have to figure it out.

So he painted the place white and light grey. Too keep it from being completely bland- he did it in a chevron pattern, and even picked the wall with the sofa and bookcase on it as an accent wall; which he added a few lines of yellow to brighten the place up. I loved it; he told me he got the idea from the blanket of mine that I slept with on his sofa in the main part of his house.

He even went as far to buy all the furniture for the place. A bed, sofa, chairs, tables, bookcase, dresser, even a rug, and curtains. He really went all out for it, no matter how much I protested.

"I want it to be homey." He told me every time I even muttered the word but.

Josh was a trust fund kid, but like me he was also an orphan; two times over in fact. His mother died in childbirth- she had been told time and time again by almost every doctor in the area that if she became pregnant she wouldn't survive the labor. He came two months early and as every doctor predicted she died- she didn't make it long enough to even be able to hold him.

His father, unable to cope with what happen to the love of his life- killed himself two weeks after his beautiful wife's death. Josh was young when it all happen so he was adopted quickly.

His adopted family to my understand were extremely rich. Unfortunately all the money in the world couldn't give them their very own child- his adopted mother, much like his mother was unable to bear children for the very reason as his own mom.

When she heard of Josh's family history she saw it as a sign from God, and adopted him that very same day. She and her husband always raised Josh with the knowledge of his family history.

When he was 15, just a few days before his 16th birthday- his new family died in a fluke airplane crash.

Josh's father, Luke, had business in China- they even wanted to take Josh with them for the trip. But stubborn as he is he refused- so he could stay home and keep up on his studies.
Josh was all either of them had.

Mr. Graham's parents had both passed away when he was in his 20's. His mother of cancer, and his father two months later of what every one said was a broken heart. Mrs. Lori Graham's father was in on of the wars, I forget which, and never made it home to hold his baby girl. Her mother, who Josh knew well didn't pass away until three months before the horrible crash.

Everything they had was left to Josh, along with the trust fund they already set up for him when they adopted him. He was set- he was told he would never had to work a day in his life. But that never stopped him.

He emancipated himself- since he was 16 by the time all the affairs were taken care of. He bought the house he lives in today and finished up school. His dream had always been, since as long as he could remember to work for, and eventually run his own music magazine.
So once he was done with all his schooling- he bought up the local art magazine and "reimagined" it.

-------

His office door was open, I could tell from down the hall cause I could hear him on the phone trying to sweet talk some bands manager into working out and interview with our magazine. He might have owned the mag but there was never a day he wasn't here working hard for it. Even if all he had to do was hire someone to do his part- they would never be able to do it quite as well as him.

I lightly tapped the open door as I rounded the corner and came in. He spun around, he had been staring out his window as he chided the thick-headed manager.

"Welcome home," he mouthed to me as he rolled his eyes and pointed to the phone. I just smiled to him and seated myself.

"Uh-huh! Yes that sounds great Mike." His voice sounded so happy with the conversation but his body language screamed otherwise.

"Oh Mike, now I know you heard me say I would need them here before then. How about the 3rd- they can saunter their asses in here whenever they get their merry selves out of bed. Good, good. Mhm, bye-bye now." He quickly hung up the phone and placed it on the hook- meeting his eyes with mine.

"Did Mike even get to agree?"

"No he didn't."

"Poor mad didn't even get to step away with a drop of dignity did he." He smiled at me, and shook his head.

"Not if he knows what good for 'em." We both laughed a little and he started collecting his things, slipping on his blazer first.

"I need to talk to you before we leave, Josh."

"Okayyyy." He sat down, he knew something was up. He watched me carefully as he pulled himself closer to his desk, closer to me. All the better to watch my body language. The man could read me like a book, so I tried to be still and thought carefully of my words and actions.

"Why did you have me do-"

"I had you do the interview because I know how much you like Avenged Sevenfold. I wanted to give you more than just a chance to photograph them on stage." He interrupted me, only because he knew where the conversation was going. "If I told you, you didn't have to do it cause I had them coming here you would have chickened out and skipped the whole thing."

"You didn't think to tell me on the phone after the fact? Do you know how dumb I looked when Matt asked me why my boss was going behind me and scheduling yet another interview for the following day! Lucky me I lied and told them it was my first interview because I was too damn nervous to talk, I needed a better reason then I was just a huge fan." I let out a deep breath and rose from my chair.

"So you're mad. Okay. I get it. I'm sorry, you're right I should have told you, at least after. That was unprofessional. I'm sorry." I walked out and I could immediately hear him scampering to get from behind his desk and out the door. In a flash he was by my side.

"Please don't be that mad that you don't even ride home with me."

"I don't even think I'm going home." He stopped dead in his tracks.

"Then where the hell with you go, Massey?" He only called me by my last night when he was either trying to seem professional, or when he wanted to stay disconnected. With no other employees around it was obvious he was distancing himself. I sighed deeply and turned around to face him.

"I'm... The band actually drove me here. Once he found out I lived out this way he offered me a ride. Actually he wants me to hang out with them the next couple days. I figured I'd walk down to the Hilton and see if I could catch up with them now."

He didn't say a word, he just inhaled deeply. He started to speak at one point, his lips parted and he held a finger up to me. But the thought never crossed his lips, instead he turned around and when back into his office. I waited a few minutes before leaving- but when I heard the pressing of buttons on his phone I knew there was no reason to stay. He'd work through the night now. Never going home.

Also I'll be gone Friday-Sunday so I probably won't be posting for a while.

Hope you guys are enjoying it so far. ^-^

I have trouble with this thing letting me correct my spelling sometime. I type so fast words come out wrong, when they get red lined- and I pick the correct spelling it doesn't always stay after I press submit. Its a tad annoying cause it really looks bad.
