Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 2

It was about 8:00 a.m. when Brian woke up. He sat up and grabbed his head feeling a pounding headache. He groaned and stood from the couch.
At exactly that time, Matt came down the stairs. "Morning. Breakfast?" he asked. "Only if I can have a pain killer first." "Yeah sure," Matt said. He pointed towards the hallway. "You know where the bathroom is. There should be some in the medicine cabinet." Brian nodded and headed down the hallway as Matt went into the kitchen. He opened the to the bathroom and turned the sink on. After looking in the mirror, he was almost disgusted. He looked like absolute shit. Brian shrugged and held his hands under the water and slashed some on his face. He took the medicine and headed into the kitchen where Val was cooking breakfast. He sat down next to Matt. "So, are you going back home today or what?" Matt asked. "I'd prefer 'or what', really," Brian answered. "You should go home Brian," Val said as she walked over to the table. "It's not like we don't want you here, but you should talk to Rain." Matt quietly laughed. "Yeah, sure. We love having you here," he said sarcastically. Val slapped him on the arm. Brian yawned and sighed. "I guess I don't have much of a choice. I have to go back home," he said. He stood up from the table. "Good luck. You'll need it" Matt said. Val turned back around. "Mathew," she said through her teeth. "What?" he asked.
That's the last thing Brian heard before heading out the door. He walked to his car and opened the door. I'm going to have such hell to pay, he thought as he turned on the engine. He headed down the street towards his house. "I can't take this," he said to himself. "That damn woman is ruining my life. I wish I could just..." The next words came to mind, but he didn't dare say them out loud. Kill her. Now, Brian may have not particularly liked Rain, but he wouldn't kill her. He would never kill someone. Not even the person he hated most in the entire world. "Get a fucking hold of yourself," he said.
He pulled into the driveway and got out of the car. "Here we go," he groaned as he walked through the front door. He was surprised that Rain wasn't sitting there, waiting on him to walk right in on her glaring at him. But she wasn't there. "Rain?" he called. No answer. He walked through the living room and into the kitchen. Empty. "Rain," he called again. Still no answer. He walked back into the living room and sat down on the couch. Wonder where she ran off to. He raised an eyebrow when he heard shuffling upstairs. "Rain?" He got up and walked up the stairs and into his bedroom. There was his wife...packing her stuff. "What are you doing?" he asked. "Leaving," she simply said. Brian couldn't do anything but stand there. "I'm going to call my sister tonight and tell her to come pick me up." "Uh...well..." Brian didn't know what to say. "I want a divorce," she finally said. "We're not happy and you're nothing but a dick to me. I'm done." She walked past him and into the bathroom. Brian turned and walked back downstairs and into the kitchen to get a beer.

After a full day of awkward silences, it was finally dark out. It was unreal what was happening. Brian knew that Rain hated him, but he never thought she would leave. He sat at the kitchen table and took a big sip of beer. He looked up as Rain walked into the kitchen and to the fridge. "Have you called your sister yet?" he asked. "No," she said quietly. "Why? Ready to get rid of me?" "No..." he responded. Rain grabbed stuff to make a sandwich and sat it on the counter. "Don't go," Brian said. "Why the hell not?" she asked without turning around. "Because...I love you." "No, you don't." "Yes, I do. And I miss you. I'm sorry." She turned around and faced him. "It's too late to apologize, Brian." She decided against her sandwich and put everything back in the fridge. She turned and walked out of the kitchen and Brian followed. "I can change. I'll stop drinking. Maybe that's the problem," he begged. "Maybe? Maybe it's the problem?" She stared right into his eyes. "You always say you'll change. You never do. Don't make promises you can't keep." Brian grabbed her by the shoulders. "I'm trying to apologize, dammit. Listen to me." "Brian, you're hurting me," she said. He loosened his grip a little and she pushed him away. "I already told you. It's too late." He felt a growing fire in the pit of his stomach. She can't just leave like this. She can't just leave him. Not after everything they have been through together. "You're not leaving," he said. "Watch me," she said as she grabbed the phone. He jerked it out of her hand and threw it against the wall, causing it to smash into pieces.
The looked in Rain's eye was one Brian had never seen from her before. Fear. "Brian, stop." "No, you're not leaving me. I'm not letting you," he said as he grabbed her arm. He was aware of what he was doing and he was trying to stop himself, but he couldn't help it. He had no power over his anger. "Let go of me," Rain demanded. Brian jerked his hand away from her. "I'm spending the night at Zacky's. You're out of control," she said. Zacky's? His wife was leaving him and she wanted to go to Zacky's. That caused Brian to snap. He grabbed an empty beer bottle and swung it in the air. He heard the bottle break and a thump. Brian finally blinked letting his anger disappear. What just happened? He looked around, then he stepped back and fell backwards. The thump sound he heard was the sound of a body hitting the ground. "Oh shit..." He quickly crawled over to Rain. Blood ran from her forehead down the side of her face. Brian shook her with shaky hands. "Rain? Come on, baby. Wake up," he said. He gently tapped her face with the back of his hand trying to wake her. "Come on, Rain. Get up." He began to shake her a little. "Get up, Rain," he begged. He held his ear to her face. She wasn't breathing.
Brian began to panic. He didn't know what to do. CPR! Brian opened Rain's mouth, blew air into her lungs, and started pumping her chest. "Come on, Rain. You have to wake up," he said. He continued this process until he realized it was no use. She was dead. Brian held her causing him to get blood on his shirt. "Oh God...what have I done?" Brian jumped when he heard the door open. Matt stepped into the living room. "Hey, man. You forgot your phone..." He looked down to see Rain's dead body in Brian's arms. The phone fell to the ground as Matt's eyes widened. "Oh my God. Brian, what the fuck did you do?"
