Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 16

Matt and Brian sat at the table in the restaurant. They both picked up a menu and started looking at it. "Have any idea what you want?" Matt asked. "I don't know. I might get a burger or something," Brian answered. He noticed that Matt has been acting more calm since they left the woods. Maybe he doesn't think it's all real? Brian had no clue. He was just acting different than he has been. "Not up for steak this time?" Matt asked with a laugh. Brian just looked at him. Was Matt actually smiling? And laughing? Or is he just trying to lighten the mood? "Nah. I don't feel like having a steak."
At about that time, the waitress walked up with her notebook and pen. "Hello, guys. Can I take your order?" "Uh, yeah. Let me get just a regular burger with some fries." She then looked at Matt and he spoke up. "That actually sounds pretty good right now. I'll have the same thing he's having." She jotted down their orders then looked back up. "And what can I get you to drink?" "Just a coke," Matt said. "What about you, Brian?" "I'll have a water," he said, not looking up. Matt looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "A water?" "Yeah. A water." The waitress spoke up. "Okay. I'll be right back with your drinks." And with that, she walked away. "You alright?" Matt asked him. "Yeah. I'm alright," Brian answered. "You sure?" "Yes. I'm just fucking peachy after what I've been going through the past couple days," he snapped. Matt put his hands up. "Calm down. I'm just worried about you."
After waiting what had seemed like forever after they got thier drinks, their food finally arrived. The waitress sat the plates down on the table next to their drinks. "You boys enjoy," she said with a friendly smile, then turned and went to another table. Brian dug in and started devouring the food. His stomach was growling embarrassingly loud by this point, and his mouth watered at the sight of the food. "Damn, where you hungry?" Matt asked with a laugh. Brian looked at him with an are-you-kidding-me look on his face. "No. Not at all." He went back to eating and Matt laughed again. "Goddamm, slow down, Bri." That's when he stopped. He stared down at the table, not looking up. Did Matt just call him Bri? He's never called him that. The only one who called him that was...her...Come to think of it, he hasn't seen her since they left the house. Every time he went anywhere he'd see her. But not since they got here. Brian looked up at Matt who was now eating and not paying attention. "What did you call me?" Matt looked back at him. "I called you Brian," he said with a mouth full of food. "What did you think I called you?" "You called me Bri," he simply said. "Oh, did I?" he asked, going back to eating. "Yeah. You did." Matt shrugged. "My bad." Brian was seriously freaked out now. Matt's never in his life called him Bri. So why would he just randomly do that now? He just shook his head and went back to eating. He was almost finished with his burger when Matt started talking again. "I don't see how you're so hungry when we ate this morning." Wait...what? "We didn't eat this morning, Matt." He nodded. "Yes, we did." "No. We didn't." He just shook his head, as if giving up. Is Matt going crazy this time? They obviously didn't eat. They were being held CAPTIVE BY HIS DEAD WIFE. Is Matt just blocking that out of his mind and pretending like it didn't happen?
Brian gave up asking questions in his mind. It was no use. But something in his mind told him to look over, so he did. And there she was...standing outside looking in the window at them with that malevolent smile he's been looking at this whole time. He quickly turned his head and put his hands over his eyes. "Oh my god, Matt." "What? What is it?" "I-it's her..." Brian choked out. He could hear his heart beating in his ears and noticed he had started sweating almost immediately. "It's who?" Matt asked. "Look out the window over there," Brian whispered. There was a second of silence, then Matt said, "What? I don't see anybody." Brian stood up. "We have to leave." "But I'm not done," Matt whined. Brian ignored him. He just walked away towards the car. "Brian," Matt called out to him. He just kept walking. But then he stopped dead in his tracks. There she was again. Sitting on the trunk of the car. "Come back to me, Brian..." she said. "I miss you." He quickly backed away. "No...stay away from me..." Then he backed into what almost felt like a brick wall then felt hands on his shoulders causing him to jump. "Brian, what's going on?" He turned to see it was Matt. "Run!" "Run from what? There's no one here!" Brian turned back around and Rain was gone. It was as if she vanished into thin air. He rubbed his eyes and blinked a few times. "What..." "Come on," Matt said with an irritated tone as he grabbed Brian's arm tightly. "Let's go back to the hotel. You need to calm down."
