Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 15

"No...no, this happened...we're not c-crazy..." Brian said as he backed away further from the gave. Matt couldn't do anything. He just stood there frozen. How could it all disappear just like that? It's impossible. Blood and wounds don't just vanish into thin air. It made him wonder if him and Brian really were going insane. But it had to have happened. If they weren't beaten and held captive by Rain, then what really did happen? Was it someone else that they saw as Rain? Or did they just hallucinate the entire thing? Nothing would surprise him. Anything made sense to him at this point. "I..." Matt just couldn't seem to get anything out. "This shit is happening. We both saw it! Right?!" Still he didn't say anything. Then Brian's eyes landed on Rain's grave. "We have to dig her up." And when Brian said those words, it was as if it were a spell that snapped Matt out of his trance. "What? Are you crazy? We're in broad day light!" Brian ignored him then knelt down next to the grave and started digging up the dirt with his bare hands. "I have to know she's in there...I have to..." Matt rushed over to Brian and grabbed him. "Syn, stop." He caught against him, struggling to break free from his hold. "No! Stop! I have to...I have to get her back..." Brian then gave in, Matt's grip still on him. "I have to get my wife back..." And that's when he lost it. He began to sob and put his face in his hands. "I did this...I did this to her...I deserve to die..." "Stop it," Matt demanded. "She should've killed me...I should've died instead...how am I supposed to live without her?"
After sitting there for a moment with tears falling from his eyes, Brian crawled back to the grave and rested his hand onto the dirt. "I love you so much...I'm sorry..." Matt got up and moved right back to his side. He rested his hands on Brian's shoulder. "Come on. Let's go," he said calmly. "No." Brian pushed Matt's hand away. "Just leave me here. Just fucking leave me." "I can't do that. Come on." He sighed in defeat and wiped his eyes, then stood up and brushed the dirt off of himself. "I can't go back. I can't go home." "We're not. We'll go to a cheap hotel or something to clear our heads. Just for tonight," Matt told him. Brian just nodded.
They both went back to the car and Matt drive down the highway until they got to the first hotel they saw. They quickly got out of the car and walked inside. Once they got to the counter, Matt took out his wallet and the man behind the counter smiled at them. "Uh...I'd like to rent a room for the night." "Oh, the honeymoon suite I'm assuming?" Matt looked up and gave him a confused look. Then he realized what the man must've been hinting at. "Oh...uh...no. No, we're good." He smiled wider. "Are you sure? It's a lovely suite." "He said we're good," Brian interrupted with an irritated tone to his voice. "Okay," the man replied, with a suit-yourself kind of tone.
They paid for the room and got their key. As they were going down the hallway, Brian asked, "Did he think we were-" "Yeah. He did." They got into their room, closed the door, and sat in the bed. Matt rubbed his eyes. "Okay, let's try to figure this out. What happened when you first went back home?" Brian scratched his head and thought for a moment. "Well, I came in and heard noises down in the basement. The door was open, so I went down and that's when she hit me and knocked me down. Next thing I knew, I was tied to a chair." He grabbed his stomach hearing it growl. "Can we get something to eat? I'm fucking starved." Matt sighed. "Yeah. I'm starving too."

Gina and Valarie sat at the kitchen table. Val held her head with her eyes closed. "Sweetie, he has to be somewhere. The boys will find him." "You don't know that," Val replied. She just wanted to cry. It wasn't like Matt to just leave without telling anybody where he was going. "Yes, I do, " Gina told her. "He's probably just sitting at a restaurant somewhere." Val looked up at her. "Sitting at a restraurant? Over night?" Gina looked down. "Plus, the guys already looked in all the restraurants." She felt the tears build up in her eyes when she thought of something she didn't want to think about. "Gina, you don't think he left me, do you?" "No. Of course not. Matt loves you. You're his entire world and everyone can see that. He'd never leave you." Gina moved from sitting across from her to sitting next to her and laid a hand on Val's shoulder. "I know it'd probably piss Matt off, but we might need to see if the police can help us." She was right. It's not that Matt didn't like police, he just didn't like them getting involved when they weren't needed. But Valarie thought they were needed now. Something could've happened to him. She had a bad feeling about this entire situation. There was a feeling in the pit of her stomach that she just couldn't get rid of. "I swear, if Brian got him into some kind of trouble..." Gina hugged her. "We'll figure this out. We'll find him."
