Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 14

Light him on fire? Is Matt seriously going through with this? A big smile formed on Rain's face. "Handsome and smart. I'll be right back." And with that, she turned and headed up the stairs. Matt turned back to Brian and cringed. "Ugh." He then knelt down to help his friend up. "Where's the car keys?" Matt asked. Brian looked at him confused. "Wait...what..." "Where's the keys, Brian?" He grabbed Matt's arm and started begging him again. "Please. Don't leave me here, Matt. I'm sorry-" "I'm not leaving you. Where's the damn keys?" he asked again. Brian pointed to a key rack over by the door. "Over there." "Alright. Come on."
Matt helped Brian up and got him over to the door. He grabbed the keys off of the key rack and they made a break for it. Matt shoved the front door open and Brian followed, but once again due to the lack of food, he barely had any energy and fell forward onto the porch. "Wait, Matt! Help me!" Matt turned and rushed back to Brian, but they heard Rain call from upstairs. "Matt, what are you doing?" "Come on!" Matt demanded and Brian got up with his aid and they bolted to the car. Brian practically fell into the passenger seat and slammed his door shut. Matt got in the driver's seat and cranked the engine. He then looked up. "Where is she?" he asked quietly. "Don't worry about that! Get us the fuck out of here!" Matt shook his head and spun out if the driveway, then down the street.
They sat there in silence for a few moments, not sure what to say. But Brian spoke up. "Where are we going?" Matt gave a frustrated sigh. "I don't... I don't know. Anywhere but here." "What about the guys? What about Val?" "I don't know, Brian!" "Stop fucking yelling at me!" he snapped back. "What if she goes after them?" Matt shook his head. "She won't." "We don't know that." Matt gritted his teeth. "Look, we just got away from her! I need time to think of something! Why don't you do the same thing!"
The rest of the ride was silent until Matt pulled into the parking lot of a gas station. He just sat there, and so did Brian. "We can't go to the police. That's for sure." he said. "Matt, let's just go back to your house." "We can't," Matt said. "We're both covered in blood and they'd ask too many questions." Brian thought for a moment, then went back to the day he took Rain's things to her grave. He pictured every detail in his head: the sound of cars going down the road, birds chirping, running water. Wait. Running water. He looked over to Matt who was resting his forehead on the steering wheel with his eyes closed. "Wasn't there a creek next to where we buried her?" "I don't wanna go back there," he replied. "I don't either but you got any better ideas? I mean, we can't go into the gas station looking like this either." Matt sighed and turned the car back on and turned onto the street.
Once they made it to the wooded area they buried Rain in, Matt looked around. "Any cars coming?" "No," Brian answered. They both got out of the car and headed down into the woods. They came up on Rain's grave and noticed something odd. Her grave. It wasn't open. It was just how they left it. Brian ran over to it and knelt down. "Wait. This isn't possible." He patted the dirt and turned around. "Matt..." "This can't be happening," Matt said as he walked over to the grave. "She's not in there...is she?" Brian shook his head. "No...she can't be...she's back at the house...right?" Matt turned around and looked at Brian...but something seemed different. The dry blood that stuck to his neck was gone. "Did you already wash the blood off of you?" Brian looked at him. "No..." He then felt the wound that was on his head. He didn't feel anything. Then he checked his shirt. Still nothing. Brian looked back up at Matt and his eyes widened. "Where's the blood that was on you?" Matt looked down and noticed his clothes were clean. Then his and Brian's eyes met. "Oh my god."
