Conjuring Her Deepest Fears

Chapter 17

Matt had left Brian in the room for a little bit to see if it would calm him down. He made sure his phone was on so Brian could get in touch with him if he needed to. But now he was back at the hotel and was coming up the stairs. He made it to the floor his room was on and unlocked the door and a whiff of what smelled like a skunk hit him like a brick wall. "What the..." He walked in the bedroom to see Brian and a guy sitting on the bed. Both of them were giggling and had red eyes. Matt looked over and saw the window wide open, which wasn't helping with the scent much, and he put it together. "Brian, what the fuck?" He looked up at Matt and said, "Oh, hey," and tapped the guy's shoulder. "Yo, this is the guy I was telling you about. He sings for my band. He's so fucking good, dude." "Hell yeah," the guy said and took a hit off a joint. The expression on Matt's face was pure anger but the other two didn't seem to care. Brian wrapped his arm around the other guy's shoulders. "Matt, this is Rob." Matt glared at him. "Where the fuck did you get pot?" Brian giggled again. "From Rob. Obviously. Duhhh." Matt shook his head then looked over at the dresser but noticed he wallet wasn't there even though that's where he left it. "Where's my wallet," Matt asked with a sigh. "I'd worry more about what's in your wallet," Brian replied. Matt slowly turned to him. "What's in my wallet then?" Rob and Brian looked at each other giggling like two little kids playing a prank. "Nothing," Rob said and Brian grabbed his stomach and fell back on the bed laughing hard. Matt stormed over to Rob and snatched the joint out of his hand. "Out. Get out." "Hey, man. That's my joint," he replied as Matt pushed him out the door. "It's mine now." And with that, Matt slammed the door in his face. He lifted the joint to his lips and hit it hard, knowing he'd need it. He then went back over to Brian who was still laid back on the bed. "Matt, I'm fucked up," he said as he heard his footsteps approaching. "Get up," Matt demanded. Brian didn't move. "I said get the fuck up!" Brian raised up. "Woah, calm down." "That wasn't fucking pot money, Brian! What gave you the good idea of spending everything I had on me on weed?!" Brian stood up and laid a hand on Matt's shoulder. "Look, I'll pay you back, dude. But I had to feel better. I was going crazy sitting here, man. But look, I have an idea. Let's not be scared of her anymore. Let's just go finish her off. Let's kill her." Matt pushed his hand off of his shoulder. "Kill who? We're not killing anybody. I'm taking you home." Home? Well, either way, Brian intended to carry this plan out, stoned or not. "You're gonna help me, right?" Matt let out a frustrated sigh and hit the joint again. "No, I'm not helping you kill someone." Brian pushed him. "See, this is what I was talking about earlier before you fucking left. You're acting like nothing is fucking wrong and you're not being yourself. What is up with you?" Matt glared at him and pushed him back. "There's nothing up with me. There's something up with you, Brian. You're bat shit crazy!" "I'm not crazy!" Brian yelled and got in his face. Matt closed his eyes and said through his teeth, "Get out of my face." "What the hell are you gonna do? You won't do shit," he said and pushed him again. That's when Matt swung and punched Brian right in the mouth. Brian swung back and hit Matt square in the eye. Neither one of them knew what set them off that easy. All they knew was that they were beating the hell out of each other. They ended up on the floor and Matt was on top of Brian, gripping his shirt and had his fist drawn back. He just looked at his friend laying on the ground with blood coming out of his mouth, waiting for him to hit him again. Matt let go of Brian's shirt and got off of him, crawling over away from him and laying back against the bed. He could feel the throbbing around his eye and knew for sure Brian gave him a shiner.
After a few moments, Brian sat up and wiped the blood from his mouth. "What are we doing?" Matt shook his head. "I don't... I don't know...I'm sorry...I guess all the stress and frustration from this week just-" "I know," Brian said, cutting him off. "I know that being put in a situation you didn't have any part of isn't exactly fun." Matt slowly stood up. "No, I do have a part in it. I'm you're friend...no, I'm you're brother. I'm not giving up on you." Brian thought for a moment. Matt's choice of words were a little weirs, but he didn't question it. "I'm sorry, Matt. For everything." Matt put his hand out, and Brian grabbed it. He pulled his friend off the ground and looked him in the eyes. "Let's go home," he said. And Brian knew exactly what he meant by the way he looked at him. They were going to end this.

Matt slowled the car as they saw the police cars outside of Brian's house. "Oh shit...oh no..." "What's going on?" Matt asked himself. Brian began to panick and turned to his friend. "Did you tell Val where you were going?" "Shit..." Matt turned and took a different route to his house. The two quickly got out of the car and rushed in. There was Val sitting on the couch next to Gina. "Valarie, why are there cop cars at Brian's place?" She looked up and her eyes widened. "Matthew Charles Sanders, where have you been?!" "I'm sorry. I took Brian to a hotel just to give him a little break. I forgot to call you. I'm so sorry." She stormed over to him. "There's police out searching for you two!" "Why exactly?" Brian asked. Val glared at him. "Because you two have been missing! You two just dissapeared! The police are probably about the leave Brian's house." "They aren't looking for me specifically, are they?" Val shook her head and wiped the tears that were built up in her eyes. "No. They were looking for the both of you." Then she turned to Matt and wrapped her arms around him. "I was so worried. I was driving myself crazy." Matt tightly hugged her back. "I'm so sorry, baby."
Brian just stood there. The police are at his house, where everything went down, Matt's acting calm, and from what he could tell, the cops didn't find anything since everyone seems pretty calm now. "They didn't find anything at my house, did they?" he asked, ruining Matt and Val's moment. She looked at him. "No. Why are you asking questions like that? What's going on?" Matt turned to him. "Brian, calm down. It's not like they're looking for a reason to arrest you." He didn't do anything but just stare. What Val asked was a very good question. What is going on?
Just then there was a knock at the door. Valarie went over and answered it and there stood a police officer. Brian could feel his heart beat in his throat. "They just came in, officer," she told him. He nodded. "I see that," he said. "Where have you two been?" Matt spoke up. "My friend here has been having it rough lately. We just went to a hotel to get his mind off things and I forgot to let my wife know where I was going. I'm very sorry for all the trouble." The officer looked over at Brian, then back to Matt. "Just don't let it happen again," he said. Valarie spoke up, "Thank you, officer."
After he left, Brian was just sta ding there beyond confused. They didn't find anything...right? No broken bottles? No bloodstains? No Rain? If the police are leaving, it must be safe to go home...right? He just shook all the questions from his head. "Okay, now I wanna ask why Matt has a black eye and why Brian has a fat lip," Val said. Brian scratched his head and said, "We uh...had a bit of aargument and it may have gotten physical." "We worked it out, though. We're fine," Matt said and kissed Val's forehead. "I'm going to be mad at you for a while, Val told him. He nodded and sighed. "I know." Brian walked up behind Matt an tapped his shoulder. "Can you uh...run me home real quick?" "Yeah. Sure. I'll be right back, Val." "You better be," she said from the couch.
After they made it to Brian's house, they went inside and Brian stopped dead in his tracks. The big bloodstain on his carpet was gone. "What..." He then jogged into the kitchen. The broken bottles were gone. "Brian, is something wrong?" he heard Matt ask. He ignored him, then turned and pushed him out of the way heading to the basement. He ran down and the blood on the floor was also gone. "Brian!" Matt called from upstairs. He soon made his way down and grabbed Brian's shoulder. "What's wrong? What is it?" "Did she do this?" he asked breathing hard. "Is she gonna come back?" Matt rubbed the back of his head. "Brian, you have to stop. You have to get over this." He turned to him. "Get over what?!" Matt looked him in the eye. "You're letting your imagination get the best of you!" Brian stepped back and blinked. His inagination? "I'm trying to help you, damnit. But you're not letting me." What was Matt talking about? "Help me?" Matt grabbed his shoulders. "Rain isn't real, Brian. You didn't kill anybody. She never existed."
