Fake Reflection

Chapter 9

Kimmie hummed softly to herself as she loaded up her cleaning caddy in the supply closet next to The Rev‘s computer room. She was cleaning the business area today. That’s the area strait ahead from the front door. Shadows has it set up that way, so if you’re there for business, you aren’t going through the living area. It horseshoes around the business area. There were only three out of the five rooms she had to clean. The conference room, were the interview happened, the infirmary, and the game room. The game room was the only room not business related, but Shadz likes having his Xbox close to him, so he put it across from the infirmary. The door before the conference room leads to the basement. There’s a gym set up down there, but for some reason Kimmie felt like the basement should be bigger. With the size of the house, it just doesn’t measure up.

The Rev’s computer room is on the other side of the hall leading to Shadows office. None of the staff are allowed in those two rooms. Jimmy cleans his computer room himself, and it’s always locked. Dan and Cam don’t even have keys to the computer room, just the gang. Matt takes care of his office himself as well. If you didn’t need to be in there, you weren’t allowed in. It was frustrating for Kimmie. Cleaning is getting her nowhere as far as finding evidence. These people were just too good at what they do. Her and Shane were going to have to come up with some kind of plan to get more information. They still had their old phones, and have been talking on their off time. They never see each other when they are working. A few pass bys, and when she arrives in the morning sometimes, but that’s pretty much it. He told her about the woman they saved. It surprised her a little as well, but she’s also over heard people on the streets talk about them helping people. It made her feel a little better about her growing attraction to the hazel eyed leader.

She hasn’t spoken to him since the first time they met, but she sees him everyday during the week. She’s even caught herself wishing she was here on the weekends just so she could be near him. It confused her a little. The last man she let near her was suppose to be a good man, but turned out to be an asshole. Now here she is attracted to someone that was suppose to be a criminal, but maybe a good man. It didn’t make sense to her. It doesn’t help any that she caught a few glimpse of him without his shirt on. Either by the pool, or coming from working out in the basement. She’s caught herself staring a few times at the hard tattooed body of Shadows, so has Syndy. That woman is everywhere. Kimmie has seen her watching her a few times. She watches the other housekeeper, Emily too, and you can never hear her coming. She’s scared the shit out of her a few times. Sometimes Kimmie thinks she does it for fun.

Kimmie backed out of the supply closet, and closed the door. She turned right into a hard body, and fell to the floor, dropping her cleaning caddy, and scattering supplies. She cursed under her breath, and looked up to see who she ran into. Speaking of hazel eyed leaders…

Kimmie’s cheeks flushed a little when he smiled down at her. “Sorry.” she whispered looking away, and gathering the items she dropped. “Don’t worry about it,” he said crouching to help her, “I wasn’t paying attention either.” he said flashing her another smile. Damn those dimples. He helped her up, and started glancing around. “You didn’t happen to see my phone did you?” he asked as he continued to look. “No, but I’ll help you find it.” she said joining the search. Kimmie opened the supply closet, and found it on the floor under a shelf. She picked it up, and glanced at the screen. Couple killed by Drug Cartel, was the headline of an article. He must have been reading and walking, but why was he reading this? If they were involved wouldn’t he already know? “Here you go,” she said handing him the phone, “It must have slid under the door.” she said motioning to the supply closet. “Thanks.” he said taking the phone with another smile. “You’re welcome.” she said returning his smile. They stood there for a moment, his honey orbs studying her deep blues. “Excuse me.” he whispered, suddenly walking away.

What the hell was that about? Kimmie thought to herself as she watched him disappear into his office. She crept down the hall, her eyes trained on the closed door, but it wasn’t shut all the way. She stopped off to the side when she heard him talking. She didn’t think anyone else was in there with him. “Two more are dead. I thought you were doing something about this?” Was he talking about the couple in the article? “You need to make it a fucking priority!” Kimmie heard him snap. He was angry. Who the hell was he talking to? He had to be on the phone, she could only hear half of the conversation. “They are killing innocent people for no fucking reason, and you need to stop them!” he barked. Why would he want to stop the cartel if he’s involved? “You’re the Goddamn Secretary of fucking Defense,” Did she hear that right? “Defend your fucking people, or I’ll find someone who will.” he threatened before slamming down his office phone.

Kimmie stood there stunned at what she had just heard. Does he really have that kind of power? If they’re not involved in the Drug Cartel, then why the hell is she here? “What are you doing?” she heard a whisper in her ear. Kimmie let out a startled yelp, and dropped her caddy again when she jumped. “Fucking hell.” she cursed as she crouched to pick up her things again. She stood up and turned to face the person who startled her. “What are you doing?” Tammy questioned again. Shit what the hell was she suppose to say. “What’s going on out here?” Kimmie heard Shadows voice behind her. She quickly turned to face him. He didn’t look to happy. “Just fuckin with the help boss.” Tammy replied quickly flashing him a wide smile. Matt let one grace his lips as he looked between the two women. “I swear you and Jimmy are going to be the death of me.” he mumbled with a smile before disappearing back in to his office.

Kimmie stared at the closed door for a moment before Tammy’s voice broke through again. “What are you doing?” she asked again, all signs of a smile gone, as she stood there, arms crossed waiting for an answer. Kimmie’s heart picked up. She was just caught eves dropping. What the hell was she suppose to say? “I was just…” she furrowed her brow, “We ran into each other in the hall, and I…” Fuck what the hell was she suppose to say, “I was just curious. Is he always so closed off?” she asked meeting Tammy’s questioning gaze. The guy is almost always in that office. Maybe she can steer Syndy’s suspicions else where.

Tammy studied the visibly nervous, and embarrassed woman in front of her. It was obvious she was up to something. “No.” she said simply. “Then why is he always in there?” Kimmie asked. “He’s a busy man,” Tammy replied, “Why do you care?” she questioned. Kimmie could feel her cheeks heating up under Tammy’s gaze. Then something happened she wasn’t expecting. A grin came out on her face. “You think he’s hot don’t you?” she asked with a knowing smile. “What? No.” Kimmie lied, looking away as she tucked her hair behind her ear, her face getting redder. Tammy’s smile got wider. She’s caught her a few times staring at him. “Don’t be embarrassed, he’s a sexy hunk of man.” Tammy said her smile never fading. “I don’t think that. He’s my boss.” Kimmie tried to lie again. “Uh-huh.” Tammy said not believing her for a second, “You know I’ve met a lot of liars in my life. You know what they all have in common?” she asked tilting her head to the side a little. Kimmie shook her head. “They all have a tell.” she said before leaving Kimmie in the hall.

Kimmie let out a sigh when Syndy turned into the game room. What the hell did she mean they all have a tell? Was she doing something that Syndy noticed when she lied? That’s not good. She was going to have to consciously watch herself to make sure she doesn’t give herself away. At least maybe now maybe Syndy thinks she just has a crush on Shadows. Is that what this was? Just a crush on a “bad boy”? She didn’t know exactly what it was. All she knew was, she could not get those beautiful honey eyes out of her mind.

Notes

Somebody needs to be more careful when she's listening in on conversations.
