Fake Reflection

Chapter 5

Tammy walked down the hall to Matt’s office. She knocked on the door with one hand as she held tightly to four folders in her other. “Come in.” she heard his muffled voice behind the closed door. She greeted him with a small smile that he returned as she walked in. “Those the people you guys hired?” Matt questioned, eyeballing the folders in her hands. “Yep. Two for each.” she said plopping the folders down on his desk. “There’s a little hottie in there too.” she added with a smirk, wiggling her brow at him. “Your point?” he asked opening the folders. Tammy rolled her eyes, and crossed her arms. “You need to get laid.” she said bluntly causing Matt to chuckle a little. “I thought we were hiring for housekeeping and security, not my bedroom.” he said looking up at her. Tammy smiled wide at him, “Killed two birds with one stone.” she said earning another chuckle from Matt. “It doesn’t matter, she’s an employee-” he started before Tammy cut him off, “Blah, blah, blah, I don’t care. Get you some of that.” she said as he smiled and shook his head.

Tammy’s been on this kick about him getting some for the past few months. She hated seeing him alone. Out of all the guys, other than Brian, he’s the only one that never brings a girl home, or try to date someone. She knows he’s having a hard time letting go of the woman he lost, but it’s been 10 years, and it was time for him to get over it. She wasn’t coming back, and he needed to move on. “Why are you so concerned about my sex life?” he asked. “You can’t sit there, and tell me you’re not bored with the one man pleasure band.” she stated as another chuckle escaped him. “Look,” she started, seriousness washing her face, “It’s not so much your sex life, or lack of, that I’m concerned about. I just hate seeing you alone. Clinging to someone you’re never going to get back. I know you love her, but she’s gone. You’re an attractive man with a good heart, and you deserve to be happy.” she told him as pain filled his eyes. “If I can find happiness again, so can you.” she said softly, and he nodded slightly at her.

“Good now that, that’s taken care of,” Tammy started opening one of the folders in front of him, “Keep your eyes on this one,” she told him pointing to a blonde woman, “She’s up to something.” All four people checked out, but there was something about this particular girl that raised some red flags. Jimmy sensed it too, so they hired her. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Matt gave her a slight nod, kind of grateful that she changed the subject. “Did you guys find anything suspicious about her?” he asked looking over the file. “No, but there was just something about the way she acted during the interview that caught our attention. Like she was hiding something.” Tammy told him. “Alright, I’ll have everyone keep an eye on her.” he told her before she left him to go over the files.

Matt let out a heavy sigh after Tammy left. He knew she was probably right. It was time for him to let her go, but he just couldn’t bring himself to it. In his mind, it was his fault she was dead, and he couldn’t help but feel like he was betraying her whenever he even looked at another woman. Matt opened the bottom drawer to his desk, and pulled out a framed photo. It was their three year anniversary that day, and she had just agreed to marry him. He had no idea then that she would be ripped away from him only a few weeks later. He never imagined that he would be the one to find her, murdered, shot in the chest in the front seat of her car. A single tear streamed down his cheek as he stared at the smiling faces in the picture. Her warm smile that lit up the room. A smile he was never going to get to see again, and it made his heart ache. He was a mess after he found her. It was so bad that Brian had to take over the gang for awhile till Matt was capable. He wanted to end the gang that day, but the guys talked him out of it. He wiped away the stray tear, and put the photo back in the drawer. Matt hasn’t told anyone that he found out who did it. He should have known when the son of a bitch showed back up with his own gang.

And Queue Mini Flashback:
Check Motherfucker- Dave clenched tightly to his phone before shattering it against the wall. He let out an animalistic growl that made Mike jump. The trembling man watched as Dave stormed to the nearest security camera, “I know you can see me Shadows,” he hissed into the camera, “I’m coming for you,” he smirked, “Just like I did your sweet little Annie.” Matt glared at the computer monitor as hot tears filled his eyes. “That’s right Shadows,” Dave started again low, “You didn’t think I was just going to let you get away with killing my uncle, the one person I ever gave a shit about, and let the cops pin that woman’s death on him, did you?” Matt gripped tightly to the back of the empty computer chair, silent tears escaping down his cheeks, as Dave’s confession filled the room. The anger boiled in Matt’s blood, but he wasn’t going to let it fuel his actions. He knew what Dave was doing, and he had time to be angry later. Right now they had a plan to follow. Matt smirked unknown to Dave. It was just going to make putting a bullet in his head that much sweeter….And End Mini Flashback

Remember the drug deal that went south. The night of Brian’s first blood. Dave was just an apprentice in the other gang. Matt didn’t know at the time that the leader was Dave’s uncle. They were going to rip off Avenged Sevenfold. He pulled out a gun, and Matt was able to dodge quick enough to avoid being hit. Then all hell broke loose. Matt was able to land a shot on the leader when he hit the ground. Nailed him in the throat, and he bled to death. Dave managed to slip away from the gun fight, and just disappeared. They ran into him, and his new gang a year later at an event Metallica was holding. A week later Annie was dead.

Matt tried to get a hold of her when she didn’t come home from work. He could take care of her, but she was independent, and would get too stir crazy if she wasn’t working. When she didn’t answer any of his calls, or reply to any of his texts, he went to her office downtown. That’s where he found her. In the parking garage with a hole in her chest. He called Johnny, who was fresh out of Medical School, but it was too late. She was dead before he got there. He should have known. Over the years as the rumors of Dave’s brutality spread, he should have pieced it together then. The wound screamed Dave. Matt has often wondered if high jacking Disturbed’s shipment was the biggest mistake of his life, but in the end it brought out the truth, and justice for many. Not just for the two personally close to him, but the hundreds of others all over the country that fell victim to Dave.

They say mental disorders run in the family. Dave and his uncle shared a common connection. His uncle saw what was inside of him at an early age. He took him under his wing, showed him how to use the gang life to satisfy his urges. After the police connected Dave’s uncle to dozens of murders all over the country, they went ahead and blamed him for the woman that was killed in the shoot out. Matt knew they would connect Dave to some. Jimmy already did once he found out who he was. They didn’t hide his body. Most of the police were preoccupied with the burning gas station, so Matt dumped him right outside the police station, drove up, pushed the body out, and drove away. Sure enough he was connected to even more than his uncle. Brutal murders, victims tortured, and assaulted. Matt gave those families closure, and ended a dangerous man’s psychotic rage. No one has bothered to find out who killed Dave or his uncle. It was considered a favor to society.

Matt knows it’s probably stupid to blame himself. He can’t help it. If he hadn’t killed him then Annie would still be alive. He wasn’t trying to kill the man when he fired the shot. Matt just wanted to wound him long enough to get away. The bullet just happened to hit him in the throat. With a heavy sigh, Matt went back to the new employee files in front of him. Maybe it was time to let her go. He could still picture her perfectly in his mind, but the sound of her voice, the melody of her laugh, were fading, and it only made his heart ache more. He could still see her beautiful blue eyes that matched the sky on the perfect day. The small little patch of freckles across the bridge of her nose, the only place that had freckles. She would never put enough sun screen on her face, and her nose always ended up getting burned. He could still remember how it felt every time she touched him, how his heart raced every time she kissed him, but it was fading, and it killed him. She was gone, and it was his fault. How could he just let her go with this guilt still ripping him apart inside?
