Chapter 27

Kimmie sat in the mall food court picking at her pizza. Tammy invited her to a girls night tomorrow, when they went shopping Lilly, and she just got done finding an outfit for it. A pair of jeans that hugged her perfectly, and a blue and white corset top that brought out her eyes. Tammy told her to wear whatever she wanted, but make sure she was comfortable. They may start the night out at a night club, but that doesn’t mean it will end there. The mischievous grin on Tammy’s face when she told her that made Kimmie both excited, and a little nervous. Matt didn’t help either when Kimmie told him she was going. “Do me a favor,” he told her, “If the words ‘What’s the worst that can happen’ come out of her mouth, walk away, and call me. I’ll come get you.” His smirk doing nothing to ease her growing nerves, but adding to the excited curiosity of what the night will have in store.

Kimmie grabbed her bag, and tossed what was left of her pizza away. The best part of her day was over, and it was only noon. She drug herself to her car, and tossed her bag into the passenger seat before climbing in. She dug into her purse, and pulled out her cop phone. As much as she didn’t want to, she had too. Pulling up Kevin’s contact, she let her thumb hover over the call button. When Matt gave her today off she told him she was going to visit her brothers for the day, and go shopping. Half of the story was true, but not all. She hated lying to him, but what is she suppose to tell him when he asks what she’s going to do with her day? “Oh well you see I’m really a cop sent her to put you behind bars, and need to go talk to my boss about who is behind this assignment, and oh yeah he’s my ex.” Kimmie let out a huff, that would go over well, she sarcastically thought to herself as she hit the green button.

The line rang four times before his voice flowed through the speaker. “Finally decide to check in?” Kevin asked without even a hello, “If it wasn’t for Shane, we’d all think you were dead.” he said. Kimmie rolled her eyes even though he couldn’t see. “As nauseous as I get when I see you, we need to talk.” she said making sure he could hear the disgust in her voice. “About what?” he asked sounding a little more annoyed. “I’ll tell you when I get there. Are you at your office?” she asked starting her car. “All day.” he replied, Kimmie hanging up on him immediately after. She pulled out of the parking lot, and on to the highway. She hasn’t checked in for a few weeks. Matt occupies all her free time, and he makes her forget about everything. At least Shane has kept them updated. She just hoped he forgot to mention her and Matt.

It was the lunch hour, so of course traffic was a bitch. It took Kimmie almost an hour to get there. She got lucky, and found a parking spot right in front of the Federal building. It brightened her mood a little, until some assface stole it when she went to back into it. Kimmie let out a frustrated growl, and threw her car into park. She got out the same time the douche got out of his car. “You mind moving? You saw I was backing into that spot.” she said not hiding her irritation. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” the guy said with a knowing smirk, “Go find another spot.” he said turning away. Kimmie narrowed her eyes at him. She didn’t want to be here in the first place, and was not in the mood for this shit. “I have a better idea,” she said, and the guy stopped to look at her, “How about I just have your car towed?” she asked flashing the man her badge. So she was abusing her authority a little, but that was totally her spot. “Alright,” the guy said walking back to his car, “I’ll move.” Kimmie smirked when she heard him mumble bitch before slamming his door closed. She kept the smug smirk on her face, giving the guy the finger when he drove by.

Kimmie backed into the spot, and smiled when she seen the guy had already put money in the meter. Front door spot, and free parking, maybe this day won’t be so bad. She walked through the doors of the building, and made her way through security, to the elevator, stopping on the fourth floor. She greeted Kevin’s secretary with a smile, “Kimberly Reynolds here to see Commissioner McNicholes.” she told her. His secretary returned her smile, nodding as she picked up her desk phone. “Miss Reynolds is here to see you.” she said, pausing a moment before hanging up. “Strait through there.” she said motioning to the closed door to her right. “Thank you.” Kimmie said before disappearing through the door.

Her smile instantly vanished when her eyes fell on him sitting there behind his desk. “Try not to look so happy to see me.” he told her not looking very happy himself. “Sorry just trying to keep down my lunch.” she said with a small smirk as she sat in the seat across from him. Kevin rolled his eyes clearly more annoyed. “What’s this about? Tell me you’ve found something.” he said slight desperation in his voice. “Probably not what you want. Who sent us in there?” she asked. Kevin looked at her confused. “I did, you know that.” he told her. Kimmie shook her head, “You said we. Who told you they were part of the Drug Cartel? You said ‘we believe’, whose we?” she asked. “I don’t see how that’s important. What’s this about?” he asked avoiding her question. “Tell me who sent us in there.” she stayed firm. Kevin sighed, and caved in. “The Secretary of Defense, William Boyd.”

She knew it. They were never part of the cartel. Her and Shane were sent in for another reason, and she had a good idea why. “He’s part of it,” she told him, receiving a confused look, “Boyd, he’s Demarco’s American partner.” Kevin’s face filled with shock. Was she really accusing a top government official of being a criminal? “That’s a hell of an accusation.” he told her. “It’s true. I saw pictures of him with Demarco. I told you they weren’t part of this when I heard Matt on the phone with Boyd.” she said. Kevin cocked a brow at her, “Matt?” he asked, not being able to hide the hint of jealousy in his voice. Kimmie’s eyes widened a little, realizing she used his name. “Shadows.” she corrected feeling her cheeks heat up a little. Kevin narrowed his eyes, “How close are you getting?” he asked. “None of your business.” she whispered looking away. “It is my business,” he snapped causing her to look at him, “Regardless of the way things are between us, I’m still your boss. I should pull you out just for not checking in.” he told her clearly upset. “You can’t do that,” she said worry in her voice, “It would compromise the whole investigation.” she told him, and it would.

Kevin was full on furious, “What investigation?” he snapped causing Kimmie to jump a little, “According to you they’re not part of it, so what’s to stop me from ending it now?” he continued not letting her get a word in, “You’re in here accusing a top government official of being a criminal, when they’re the criminals!”

Kimmie had heard enough, and stood to leave. She found out what she wanted. “We’re not done here.” Kevin said as she turned for the door. “We are.” she said reaching for the handle on the door. “Are you sleeping with him?” the question made her stop in her tracks. She turned to face him, smirking at the jealousy in his eyes, but didn’t respond. “You are, aren’t you?” he sneered standing, and walking over to her. Kimmie’s smirk never faded as she responded to him, “So what if I am?” she asked, watching the jealousy thicken in his eyes, “He’s a better lover than you ever were.” she said opening the door to leave. She started to walk out when his next words stopped her, causing her blood to boil. “Sleeping with the enemy, what would your father think?”

Kimmie whipped around, rage burning in her eyes, and slapped him hard across the face. She didn’t care if she lost her job because of it. How dare he bring her father into this. “You didn’t know him, so you have no idea what he would think, and if you ever mention him again, you’ll get more than a slap to the the face.” she warned before storming out, leaving both Kevin and his secretary stunned.

Kimmie squealed tires as she pulled out onto the street. She couldn’t believe he would even mention her father. She had half a mind to go tell Matt everything until she felt the familiar pull of the guilt. Kevin’s words started to eat at her as she drove back to Huntington. She’s tried hard not to think about how disappointed he would be with her, but she couldn’t help how she felt about him. She was falling hard, and couldn’t stop it. Then she remembered something that settled her. Something her father use to always tell her. “Follow your heart, Kimmie. Although it may seem like it’s taking you down the wrong path, it will always lead you to where you need to be.” She had to stay in. They’re not the bad people everyone thinks they are. She had to get a hold of those pictures somehow. Maybe she could bring out the truth.

Kimmie pulled into her driveway, and killed the engine, grabbing her bag before climbing out. She hasn’t been home for a while, and the place felt more empty than before. Maybe it was the day she was having, or maybe it was because Jasper wasn’t there. She decided to just leave, and wait for Matt at the mansion. She was headed for the door when her cop phone started ringing. She dug it out of her purse, a little relieved to see Shane’s name on the screen, and not Kevin, even if the last conversation they had didn’t end well.
“Hello.” she answered
“Please tell me you’re home?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
“I need to talk to you. I’m on my way now.”
“Alright, I’ll be here.” she sighed, placing her purse on the table next to the door. Looks like she wasn’t leaving yet. “I’ll see you in a bit.” he said before hanging up.

Shane walked through her door about twenty minutes later, and plopped down on the couch next to her. “You’ll never believe what I saw today.” he said when she looked at him. She knew about the job today. Matt told her about it when he gave her the day off. She sat quietly, and listened to Shane tell her about the job. It surprised her how excited, and happy he sounded when he explained the story, even the part about Matt killing Raymond. “Got to see the Rev in action. The guy is like a fucking machine on that computer. He hacked into the guys bank account, and gave all the families the money back that they paid,” he told her, and she smiled, “The Berrys got all their citizenship papers filled out, and pushed through. These guys really know how to work the system. It was amazing to be a part of it. The people were so grateful. It felt awesome. God I wish you could have been there.” he finished watching her smile get wider. “What?” he asked noticing the wide smile, and amused look Kimmie was giving him. “Nothing. Sounds like you had an interesting day.” she said. Shane nodded, “At first I was shocked, and a little pissed that he would just kill the guy, but the way he explained it opened my eyes. The people need them. His ways may be unconventional, to say the least, but they work,” he paused and looked Kimmie sincerely in the eyes, “He’s a good man, and I see that now.” he finished, earning a wider smile.

Kimmie was happy and relieved that he was finally seeing what she saw in him. “How was your day?” Shane asked, chuckling when she grimaced. “That bad huh?” Kimmie sighed, “I went to talk to Kevin today.” she said, and Shane shared her grimace. “How did that go?”
“It could have went better,” she said a small smile forming, “I kind of rubbed it in his face that Matt was better than him.” Shane looked at her shocked. He’s made sure they knew she was alive and okay, but not once did he let it slip that she was getting close with him. It surprised him she said something. “You told him you were sleeping with him?” he asked the shock clear. “He asked, and when I saw the jealousy in his eyes, I just couldn’t help myself.” she confessed, and Shane chuckled. “Man I wish I could have seen the look on his face. What did you go talk to him about?” he asked.

Kimmie hesitated for a moment, not really sure how he would react ot what she thought. He seems to be coming around, maybe he would support her theory. “I saw pictures of William Boyd with Demarco Hernandez,” she told him watching his eyes widen, “I asked Kevin who was behind this investigation, and he told me it was Boyd. Remember when I heard Matt on the phone with him?” Shane nodded, “You think he sent us to get Matt off his back, so no one finds out.” he said piecing together what she was thinking. Kimmie nodded before suddenly looking at Shane confused. “Did you just call him Matt?” she asked. He’s never called him that. It’s always Shadows. Shane smirked, “Well I did kind of save the guy’s life today,” he said kind of proud, “It’s just going to take some getting use to.” he finished. “So what do you want to do about this?” Shane asked getting back on topic. “We could tell Matt everything.” Kimmie suggested, but not really liking the idea. Shane didn’t seem to either. “They’d fire us in a heartbeat. I don’t even think dad could save our jobs.”

Kimmie ran a frustrated hand through her hair, “If I could just get a hold of those pictures.” she mumbled to herself. “Where did you see them?” Shane asked. “On his phone. I was sitting on his lap when he was looking through his email.” she explained, her cheeks heating up when he chuckled a little, “Matt has someone following him.” Shane nodded as he thought of a way to get the pictures. “Where does he keep his phone at night?” he asked. “On the nightstand, why?” she replied, wondering where he was going with this. “Forward them to your email when he’s asleep,” he told her, “Just remember to delete them from his sent emails.” he added. Kimmie nodded, liking the idea. Matt sleeps like a rock. She has no problem slipping in and out of bed when she has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. This should be easy. “Yeah I’ll do that tonight.” she said. “We’ll just stay in until we get this figured out,” Shane said, “They want someone connected to the cartel, lets make sure it’s the right person.”
