You Think You've Got It, Don'tcha?

Chapter Seven

We both climbed into my car, Brian getting in on the passenger side, and I getting in on the driver's. I started the car and looked back before putting the car in reverse and backing out of the driveway. This was actually happening. I was going to be having a fresh start in California in less than 3 days, depending on if Brian would want to stop at a motel and rest for the night. It wouldn't take no more than about 4 hours to leave Nebraska and cross into the next state. Four hours of driving was okay with me as long as I had someone with me, and thank God I did.

Brian buckled up and laid his head against the window and curled up a little, crossing his arms over his stomach. "Ready?" I asked. He closed his eyes and nodded.

"Yeah, yeah." He said. "Ready."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a few hours later, and I was already getting tired. I looked at the time on my dash, and the clock read 12:01 pm. I looked over at Brian, who was asleep and snoring as loud as can be. He was adorable when he was sleeping, not gonna lie. He was adorable in general, honestly. His bone structure in his face was almost perfect. His cheekbones sunk in just right, and his lips were thin, and he still had bed hair, proving that he was too lazy to do anything with it this morning. I pulled into a motel parking lot and killed the ignition, tapping Brian on the shoulder, making him bump his head on the window.

"..The hell, man." He groaned loudly, "Where are we even..."

"Colorado."

"The city, Ry.." he rubbed his eyes and sat up, then rubbed his forehead.

"Sterling." I replied, grabbing my keys and getting out. I waited until Brian was out to lock the doors, then headed inside. I looked around and the place was kinda crappy. Brian still looked sleepy, so I had to get a room, quick. I walked up to the person behind the desk and asked about a room, not caring if it only had one bed. Brian and I had slept in the same bed numerous times. It's completely harmless. A few minutes later, after paying for the room and having cheesy pick-up lines used on me, we walked down the halls to our room.

I swiped the keycard through the lock and pushed the door open, pushing Brian inside and onto the bed. "Sleep." I commanded. "You're gonna need plenty if you're driving the rest of the way there. We can stay here the rest of the day, and leave around 9-ish tomorrow morning, and we should be there in about a day or so."

Brian looked confused. He gave a casual shrug and crawled under the blankets, then turned away. I jumped onto the bed and crawled on top of him. "What are you doing?" he groaned.

"Can I see your phone so I could get Zack's number?" I pestered. He pointed to the nightstand where his phone was and I grabbed it, slid the lock screen, then came to the number lock.

"Oh man..." I sighed. I had no idea what the password was. He never really used one unless he thought someone was snooping through his phone. I wouldn't blame him. I shook his shoulder, and all he said was birth year. I thought for a minute. Was it his birth year? Or my birth year? I typed in his year, 1981. Nothing worked. I typed in all of his friend's birth years, temporarily disabling his phone for 5 minutes and groaned, setting his phone back down until it's time was up.

"no, no. no... you two... perfect." I heard Brian mumble. I looked over at him and he tossed and turned, then curled up to one of the pillows. I watched him for a few minutes, wondering if he was going to say anything else, and then turned my attention back to his phone, who had started ringing as I picked it up.

As if out of coincidence, it was Zack.

I slid the lock screen, and gave a sweet and innocent hello. "Hello?" He asked. "Brian?"

"Uh... No. This isn't Brian." He sounded like he took in a sharp breath.

"Shit, he must be busy. Tell him I'll call him back later okay? Who is this?" He asked. He must have liked to ask a lot of questions, as Brian stated.

"It's Ryden. Who is this?" I played, a smirk spreading across my mouth.

"Zack Baker. Did he talk to you about me? Bastard better not have, I swear to God."

"Chill." I replied, "It's all good. I'm excited to see you too."

"Ahh." He breathed out. "Alright, that's good. Where are you guys? I can meet halfway. Or I can drive as far as I can and let you two catch up to me."

"We're in Colorado. Like, Sterling, Colorado." I said. "We just left for California today."

"Colorado.. Hm. I know what we can do. I have friends who live there, not 20 minutes away. How about I fly you and Brian out tonight and have them drive your things here?"

I hesitated. I didn't trust anyone driving that car but Brian. He sounded pretty convincing though.. No driving, and I can sleep on the way there to make up for what I missed driving here. Then I looked at Brian and shook his shoulders. "Brian." I whispered, "Brian, wake up." All he did was groan. His groans were starting to get on my nerves. I've had enough for one day. "Bri, Zack's flying us out to Cali tonight and having someone drive my stuff there."

He instantly jumped up and grabbed his phone from my hand, and pressed it to his ear then got up, walking to the bathroom. Within a few minutes, he was out. "Looks like we're leaving tonight." He said, shoving his phone in his pocket.

"He sounds like boyfriend material."

"See, I told you." He said, sitting down. "Give him a chance."

"I will if he takes me for a tour when we get there." I said. "Sounds wonderful to be around.; and that voice though..." I groaned playfully. He chuckled.

"Alright. You stay with Zack when we get there, and I'll stay with my brother and sister, Brent and McKenna until Zack gets your shit drove up there."

"You're trusting me to stay the night with a stranger?"

"He may be a stranger to you, but he's been my best friend for ages." He replied. I furrowed my eyebrows. He never told me about Zack, nor talked about him, before a couple of days ago.

"Huh." I huffed. "Alright then."

He nodded. "Yeah. When you put the keys back in the car, make sure that you put them somewhere hidden and then tell me where they are so I can tell Zack's friend where they are." He said. I nodded back.

"Mkay." I replied. "I can do that."
