You Think You've Got It, Don'tcha?

Chapter Six

It was the next morning. I stretched, feeling my back pop, and I must have slept in a really weird position, because my body was extremely sore. I didn't appreciate this at all. I got up, slipping on a pair of my flannel pajama pants, and walked upstairs. My bedroom was one of the rooms in the basement, so I had to walk up a flight of stairs every morning first thing after I woke up. It was Monday, and waking up on Mondays in a good mood was extremely rare for me.

After I had walked upstairs to the kitchen, I instantly walked to the coffee maker and grabbed a mug from the cabinet, rubbing my eyes. I could see my reflection in the kitchen window, and it wasn't a pretty sight to see at 7:30 in the morning. I didn't have school, because I graduated already, and neither did Ryden. I had no idea where Matthew was, considering the fact that he didn't bother to show up last night so we could go to the bar. I heard my phone vibrate on the kitchen counter and automatically picked it up and answered.

"Hello?"

"Hello! Brian?? Come over and help me pack my things into my car. We're leaving today." I heard Ryden say. A smiled spread across my mouth and nodded.

"I'll be there soon, Kitty." I said, holding the phone between my shoulder and ear while I poured my coffee. "I still have to get dressed and shit."

"Flannel pajama pants." She said. I sipped my coffee.

"Mhm." I responded. I can just slip on a shirt and my slippers, but I don't want to wear that for two days."

"Your pajamas are comfortable. I don't see why you wouldn't want to spend the day in them."

"I would. Just not two days. And especially not when I'm going to be showing you off to my other friends." I said, shaking my head. I heard her gasp.

"You might as well just move with me. The apartment I'm staying in has two bedrooms, and I wouldn't really mind giving you one." She said. "You have friends up there, and you barely have any here, so why not?"

"Because-"

"I don't wanna hear it, Elwin. Now get your ass over here! I'm too excited to wait and you have some clothes over here that you left while you were doing your laundry a few days ago."

"I thought I grabbed those!" I shouted, "And also, don't call me by my middle name, James."

"I'll call you by whatever I wanna." She said, then hung up. Well, I guess I should probably get dressed, like right now. I finished my mug of coffee, tossing it in the sink and I heard a clatter. I'm in a world of hurt if my parents come home and find a broken mug, I thought. I shrugged it off, and I made my way back downstairs. I hadn't even been up 20 minutes and I had to leave. Hopefully, she'll drive so I can get some sleep.

I got dressed, pulling on a black cut-off and my black jeans, later on smearing on some eyeliner and spiking my hair, just because Ryden loved it like that. I'm gonna admit, I really liked Ryden; I had for a looong time. But now since she's going to have a chance with someone else - that I know of, anyways - I didn't want to say anything that would possibly steal her from Zack. Honestly she's the reason I've been single this whole time. Waiting for her to actually become legal before I said anything, I thought, was a good idea, considering that when we had first met, she was turning 15. Weird, huh?

I slipped on my boots and warn upstairs, and I must have tripped over a stair, because on the last one, I fell. not down the stairs, but up. I landed on my hands, my face just centimeters from the ground and took a deep breath, played it off like it was no big deal, and did a push up. I grabbed my keys, walked outside, and locked the door. The air was really cool, but it was perfect weather to wear a cut off for me. Maybe one of the articles of clothing that I left over there was my jacket, because I hadn't seen that in a few days. In all honesty I never really wore it much anyways, I was a real bad ass when it came to the weather, wearing no jacket and nothing but cut-offs and short sleeved shirts to impress Ryden.

It probably hasn't worked yet, but a man can try.

Walking down the street, I noticed a yellow-greyish car pull up beside me. It was, as I thought, Matt, and he rolled down the passenger side window.

"Syn, what the hell are you doing out here with no jacket? Where are you even going?" He asked. I shrugged my shoulder and stuffed my hands in my front pockets as I walked along and stopped at a crosswalk. Finally, I gave him the attention from me that he wanted.

"I'm going to Ryden's. And I have abso-fucking-lutely no idea why." I lied, pressing the button to change the signal across the street. Matt drove slowly, keeping up with my pace as he asked all these questions, like what are we going to do? Has she talked to you about the other night? I hated the way her name slid out of his mouth. I just hated him saying her name, or talking about her, in general.

"I could give you a lift, if you're not too hard-assed about that." Matt said, pulling over to my side of the street and opening the passenger side door. I shook my head and waved my hand to signify that I wasn't interested, and kept walking. Besides, her house was right there. I didn't need a ride to get there and back. I seen Matthew shrug out of the corner of my eye and he sped off after closing the door.

After walking up to the door of her house, I rang the doorbell. Not even moments later, I heard someone shout, "Ryden, Brian's here!" It must have been her mom, or a friend, because it was definitely feminine. After a few seconds, Ryden opened the door and pulled me inside, hugging me tightly.

"About damn time, you slow poke." She mumbled. The expression on her face looked down, like she was sad; and the tone of voice signified that she had to be sad also.

"I assume that I'll be driving?" I asked, she nodded slowly, sniffling a little. She must have been crying too. I didn't really know since I didn't, or couldn't, see much of her face.

"I'll drive though if you don't want to. When we cross the state border, you can drive, because I don't know the way to California." She said. I rubbed her back assuringly.

"Yeah, yeah." I replied, nodding. "I'll drive the rest of the way there."
