Where Are You Now

Here's To The Past

Marilyn's Point of view

I stepped out of the cab after it pulled up in front of my childhood home where my parents still lived. I'd be lying if I told you to being here in Huntington Beach wasn't effecting me, it is. I wish I had another option but after failing on numerous accounts to get Charlie to let me back in to our apartment, home was my only option.

"That'll be forty dollars, miss." The cab driver said to me from inside the cab. Good thing I took that fifty from Charlie's dresser before he kicked me out.

"Here ya go." I said as I handed him the money and waited as he made change.

"Marilyn?" I heard a very familiar voice call from behind me.

I took the change from the cab driver and turned around to see my mom, Alice, standing on the front porch.

"Hey, Mama." I said with a small smile as I started walking towards the house.

"What are you doing here?" She asked giving me an unsure look.

"I need you, Mama." I said, honestly.

"You're a mess. Come on inside and get cleaned up. Your bedroom is still the same." She said with a sad smile.

"Thank you." I said as I gave her an appreciative smile and walked inside.

I walked inside and instantly regretted ever coming here. My mom had pictures of me and Jacob everywhere.

"Marilyn, are you alright?" Mom asked.

I walked over to her mantle where these pictures were and laid them all down so I couldn't see my little boy or the person I used to be, before answering her, "I'm fine now."

Once I was clean and dressed again, I walked down stairs to find that my mom had set the pictures back up and was sitting in the dining room holding one of Jacob and I, tears rolling down her face.

"Um, I need to find a job? Do you have any leads?" I asked, not really wanting to talk about what has my mother moved to tears.

"Really, Lyn?" She asked aggravated.

"Yeah, Mom. I need a job so I can get back on my feet." I replied.

"Why? So you can fuck it up again?" She snapped.

"Fuck this." I said before getting up and walking out towards the front door. Once the door was open she yelled out to me "Yeah, go fucking shoot some more heroin! That'll fucking solve everything!" I slammed the door hoping that no one was out on our street to hear that. I was hoping to leave that part of my life back in LA. But I wasn't that lucky, there were all kinds of people outside, some with their families, and they are all staring me down, the judgement dripping off them.

"Thanks, for that mom." I said to know one and started walking.

"Marilyn?" I heard a voice call.

I turned around to see a face I hadn't expected to see at all looking at me.

"Charlie? What are you doing here?" So much for leaving that part of me in LA.

"I came here to get you."

"I don't wanna go with you." I said.

"I didn't ask you that, Mar." He replied.

"Fuck off." I said, as I started to walk in the park just to get away from him.

On the drive down from LA, I had plenty of time to think about all the things that I've put up with from Charlie just so he'd keep me stocked up with dope and the list was shameful. I don't want to be that person anymore.

I thought that I was fear of him but apparently I was wrong.

"You're not getting away from me that easily, Marilyn." Charlie stated as he grabbed a hold of my arm an twisted me around to face him.

"Let me go." I said, my voice full of disdain. I've let him treat me like this for long enough.

"I thought you were smart enough to know that good sluts don't talk back." He replied with a smirk.

"Fuck you!" I yelled in his face.

He raised his hand to slap my face like so many times before. I braced myself for the pain but it didn't come.

"I suggest, you get back in your fancy car and drive back to whatever hole you crawled out of."

Why, of all the people in Huntington Beach did he have to be the one to intervene. Fuck, I would rather of let Charlie fucking beat the shit out me than face him again.

"I don't know who you are, asshole, but this isn't any of your fucking business." Charlie replied. I used the distraction to pull my arm from his grip.

"Let's go home, Marilyn. Now." He said turning back to face me.

"No, you kicked me out. I don't need you." I replied confidently.

"You might not need me but you need my heroin."

"You heard her. She's not leaving with you. Now get lost." Brian said after he moved to stand between me and Charlie.

"Fine. This isn't over, Marilyn." Charlie said while putting his sunglasses on.

I flipped him off just before he turned around and walked back towards the way he came.

Brian turned to face me and spoke, "What the hell was that about?" He asked.

"I don't see how that's any of your business." I spat as I walked towards the picnic table.

"Well, considering that I'm now on that guys bad list I think I have the right to know who he is." Brian said as he followed me.

"Fine, his name is Charlie. I used to fuck him and now I don't." I snapped back. I pulled my phone from my pocket and looked for my mom's number. It's to late to go job hunting now and I'm tired of walking.

"Marilyn?" Brian said as he sat down across from me at the picnic table.

"Why are you still here?" I asked. Please don't ask why I left you?

"I-Why?"

"Why what? Did I stop fucking him?" I asked trying to either distract him from the path his was on.

"No, why did you leave me?" He asked.

"Brian, I'm tired and I don't wanna talk to you."

"What did I do?" He asked.

"Why the fuck do you care?" I asked back.

"I just, always wondered why?" He asked

I didn't reply I just texted my mom and asked her to come and get me.

"Marilyn, don't you at least owe me an answer?" Brian questioned, I could tell by his tone of voice that he was getting pissed.

"I don't owe you shit." I spat back.

"Why are you being like this? You didn't think that by coming back here you'd have to talk to me about this?"

"I actually thought that you'd moved away so it was safe to come here again. I was wrong." I said.

God, Mom drive faster!

"Yeah, you were obviously safer where you were because I didn't just stop some asshole from hitting you." He replied sarcastically.

I looked up at him and we locked eyes for the first time in years and I told him the truth, "You hurt me more than Charlie or anyone ever could."

He looked back at me confused. I was grateful for my phone going off, it was a text from my mom saying that she was here.

I stood up and walked away from Brian and hoping that I'd never have to see him again.
