Where Are You Now

Brian's Son

Marilyn's Point of View

"Brian?" I asked form my spot on the couch of our shitty little apartment.

"Yes, love?" Brian replied from the kitchen which was in the same room.

"Do you ever think about our future?" I asked. I know that I'm pregnant but I have to test the water with him before I tell him.

"Yeah, sometimes but only like what are we doing tomorrow." He said as he came back to the couch with a beer in his hand.

"So, you don't ever think about having kids or anything?" I said, waiting for the impending doom.

"God no. I don't want kids at all. I'll be too busy for that kind of life. Which is fine by me." He said.

And there it is.

The sound of a car horn blaring behind me pulled me from my thoughts. My mom was kind enough to lend me her car to get a job, which I did. I'm a waitress at Johnny's Bar now.

I gave my turn signal and turned down the road that lead to home. Being home wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Seeing Brian the other day was hard, Jake looked so much like him, but after our conversation I think he'll leave me alone now. Which means I can bury all that shit again and hopefully stop using drugs to do it. These past few days I've been taking pills that I bought from some guy here in Huntington but once those are gone I quit.

Zacky's Point of View

I walked up the walkway to Marilyn's Mom's house and knocked on the door. It blew my mind when Brian told me she was back, I never thought she'd come back here but lo and behold, she did. I'm glad she did because I've missed talking to her. The thing Brian fails to remember is that we were all close to her, maybe not as close as him but still, she was my best friend. I always wondered why she just disappeared. I know she shut Brian down on the topic but she has never shut me out before. Well, other than leaving the way she did.

"Zack?" Marilyn's Mom asked from in front of me.

"Oh, sorry. I didn't know you opened the door. Is Marilyn here?" I asked a bit embarrassed.

"Oh, She's not here, honey." She said with a faint smile.

"Brian told me he talked to her yesterday. I know she's home." I pressed.

"She's back, yes. But She's out."

"Do you think I could wait for her?" I asked.

"Sure, come on in." She said.

I walked inside the living room and noticed that it hasn't changed much in the years that it's been since I've been here.

"You can wait in the living room for her. She should be back soon. Would you like to stay for supper?" She asked.

"No, thanks." I replied with a smile after which she turned and went to the kitchen.

I walked over to the mantel to get a closer look at the photos. There were some of Marilyn when she was younger and then there were some that had to have been took after she left. I'm not sure who the little boy in the picture is though. I reached up and took the picture from it's place and walked over to the couch and sat down. Why does this kid look so familiar? Once I reached the kids face it clicked in my head. This is Brian's son.

A wave of understanding washed over me. That's why she left. She was pregnant. Did Brian know?

"What the fuck are you doing?" I heard a voice I haven't heard in years exclaim from the doorway.

"Marilyn, -" I started but not sure what to say next.

She walked over and took the photo from my hands and placed it face down on the mantel before doing the same to all the others of the boy.

After a minute she walked back out into the living room and stop when she was in front of me.

"Get out." She said.

"Can we please talk, 'Lyn?" I asked.

"There is nothing to talk about, Zack." She stated in a firm voice as she walked towards the stairs.

I sat there wondering what I could say or do that would make her talk to me. After a about five minutes she came back down the stairs and in different clothes than when she first came in.

Her mom walked in from the kitchen and took in her daughters appearance.

"Where are you going?" She asked in a worried tone.

"Out."

"Out where?"

"I'm not a god damn teenager. I finally got a job so I'm going to celebrate."

"Celebrate with what?" Her mom pressed.

"With cock and dope." She said in a dismissive half joking manner.

I decided I would speak up and ask the only question that came to mind.

"Where is he?"

"Who?" Alice asked.

"The boy in the pictures. Brian's son."

Marilyn looked over at me and I've never seen so much pain and hate in her eyes before in my life. The more I looked into them the more I could see she was on something.

"You wanna know where Brian's son is? Brian may have been his father but he never loved him. He didn't want him. He didn't want us."

"Did he say that?" I asked.

"Yes."

"Where is he, Marilyn?"

"Don't fucking ask me that again, Zacky." she warned before grabbing her phone and walking towards the door.

"Please be safe. I can't lose you too, sweetheart." Her mother pleaded.

What am I supposed to do now?
