Desire of the Soul

Brian’s POV

It’s the third day now since Ana was in coma. She was relocated to another room yesterday and now we can all sit by her, actually I’m sleeping here, too.
I was talking to her the whole time and hoped that she would hear me.

The doctor said that the most dangerous time lay past us now and we must wait for her to wake up. She had different medical test this morning which would tell us why she was still in coma. Iwas impatiently waiting for results because the time had stopped for me on the night of the accident. I just wanna hold her in my arms again and then I would know that everything is good. My only hope was that she didn’t feel pain while she was asleep.

“You really don’t have to sit here with me” I said to all of my friends, also sitting beside Ana’s bed. They only went home to sleep and every morning they back here, we were eating dinner together, we were joking at least a little, they tried to cheer me up they tried everything to turn my attention from the accident just for a short moment.

The door opened and two doctors came inside, one of them holds a stack of papers in his hands.
“Finally, we have all the test results” he said and my heart started to beat way too fast.
I looked questioningly at him and he continued.
“It seems that everything is going to be good, there are no serious brain injuries but we still have to wait until she finally wakes up to be 100% sure.”
“So it means that we still don’t know when she will wake up?”
“No, not for sure but we think that it should happen within the next 24 hours.”
“Oh, thank god” I said. That was a progress, finally a progress.
“But.. There is one more thing..” The doctor continued.
Nooo! My heart was squeezed in pain again, I couldn’t stand more bad news.
“What is it?” I finally wanted to know.
“ We can’t be sure if the child is okay. The blood test show that it still living, but we can’t see anything on the USG, because of the broken ribs and..”
The words sank slowly inn, that did he just say? The child?! Did he really say child?
“Wait, wait.. About whose child are you talking about?”
“About your child?! Or, well about Mrs. Evans child.. Wait? You didn’t know anything about the pregnancy?”
Wow. I need to sit down. I felt dizzy. “A Baby?”, I repeated.
“Yes, she is in approx. the fourth week, but we can’t be 100% sure, right now.”
“I’ll be a Dad?!”, I was so shocked and the word ‘Dad’ was like Wow! It blew me away!
“It seems so yes, but like I told you, we can’t be sure if the fetus will survive. You know that was a really strong hit through the accident and actually we didn’t know that she was pregnant and through the operation and medication we had to give Mrs. Evans there could be done a permanent damage.”
“Is there any chance that my ba..ee..bab-yy.. will live?”
“I am sorry it’s not more than a 50/50 chance. We have to go now and we hope that at the next time we can talk with your fiancé ourselves.”
They went out, and I looked at everyone, they looked as shocked as me, because for first time since they were here, they had stopped the talking.
“I’ll be … a dad?!” I asked more to myself.
“It’s fucking awesome! I will be.. I’ll be an uncle?! Do you understand? I will be Jimmy fucking-the-best- uncle in the whole world!” Jimmy with his enthusiasm, I wanted to smile at that, but I couldn’t. “Damn, we don’t know. What else can happen now? I just found out that we’ll have baby and one second later it turns out that our baby could die.” I wanted to scream but I didn’t want to startle Ana, even if she still was in coma.

It makes me feel even worse. If I’ll be dad- wow, that would be amazing. We haven’t planned it, but wow, we would be a real family. I wonder if Ana had known about it. But I don’t think so, my Ana would have told me about that. I was sitting next to her bed again and holding her hand. I looked over at her perfect face, she wasn’t looking like a person who was fighting for her life, she lay so still. Suddenly I felt something move beneath my fingers. I opened my eyes wide and looked around.
“She raised her hand! I promise, I felt that!” I said loudly and everyone around me looked at Ana.
“Ana! Ana, can you hear me?!” I said to her and leaned over her bed. I began to stroke her cheek softly. She lazily opened her eyes, and I saw these familiar green irises.
“She wakes up!” I yelled.
Everyone comes closer and looked even closely all with a big smile on their faces. Ana looked confused around. At the next second one of the doctor and a nurse ran into the room and towards her bed.
“Please make some space, we need to take a look at her. Hello Mrs. Evans, can you hear me? You’re in the hospital”
For the first time since the accident I was happy.
Damn, my girl, my little girl woke up.
God, thank you!
