Double Trouble

The Fight

Over the next few weeks, I hit the three month mark. Usually, women don't have a baby bump at three months, but because I had two babies inside of me, I had a very tiny bump. If I hadn't had such a flat stomach I probably wouldn't have ever noticed that it poked out very slightly.
I had shown Jimmy and he danced around the room. "My babies are growing!" he shouted which in turn made Titan bark.
I was already excited over my little family and our babies weren't even here yet. I knew that Jimmy and I would be the best parents any kid ever had. And these twins would have the best four uncles who would love and care for them so much.
Today, we were going to a barbeque at Matt's house. Matt loved to have a barbeque quite often and I never missed one if I could help it (college doesn't count). I was wearing my bikini on under a tank top and shorts. I looked at my reflection and sighed.
Soon, I'd have to say goodbye to my perfect figure. I had never been that kind of girl to be obsessed with looks, but I had to admit that I was blessed to have such a flat stomach when most girls would kill for it. I knew that since I was having twins, I was a lot less likely to get my nice stomach back.
On the way to Matt's house, I couldn't help but rub my baby bump. I had been doing this a lot since I'd found out I was pregnant. I had never thought that far into my future before, even if I had, I don't think I would have ever seen my future being this perfect.
In Matt's backyard, I stood with Val as we talked about baby names. I hadn't really decided on what I wanted yet and I knew Jimmy and I would figure it out when we learned the sex of our babies. I did know I wasn't naming them Jimmy Jr one and Jimmy Jr two.
I felt arms snake around my shoulders, but I knew it wasn't Jimmy. I looked down at the hands and saw MARLBORO tattooed across his knuckles.
"Brian," I said. "What are you doing?"
He laughed and let me go. "Hugging my little sister. What's wrong with that?"
I turned and smiled at him. "Nothing at all. I think Michelle is going to be here later."
Brian looked to Val for confirmation and she nodded. "Yeah," she said. "She should actually be here now." Brian ran off through the crowd looking for his girlfriend and we both laughed.
That night, I ate so much i thought I would explode, but I was always hungry. Zacky (Mr. Oh So Sensitive) decided to point this out.
"My God, Brookie," he said, staring at me. "You're eating more than Matt!"
I glared at him. "Damn babies are eating it before it fills me up. So shut your whore mouth."
My boys all laughed while Zack looked at me with surprise. He had expected me to just laugh it off. Now he knows not to fuck with a pregnant woman.
Jimmy wrapped his arm around my shoulders as he took another swig of his beer. I had always known he drank a lot, hell, all of us did, but Jimmy had been taking it kind of far lately and with his heart condition, I knew he should take it down a notch.
I elbowed his side gently. "Baby, calm down on the drinking ok? That's your sixth beer since we've been here. Plus you had three shots when you first got here and Jack at home."
Jimmy scoffed. "So? What are you saying?" he said, slurring a bit.
"You need to tone it down a bit, Jimmy. You know about your condition. This much acohol in your system all at once is dangerous," I said sighing.
He took another drink. "My health is fine. I'm as healthy as a fucking race horse!" Jimmy shouted and made almost everyone look at us.
Matt leaned over and said. "Maybe you should take him home, Brookie."
I nodded and started leading Jimmy to the door as I said goodbye to the others. But Jimmy wasn't having any of this. He stomped his foot and sat on the ground. "I'm not going anywhere. There is nothing wrong with me and I can drink if I want to! Drinking is fun."
I sighed again. "Yes, but with your condition, baby, you shouldn't drink that much in that short amount of time." I pulled on his hand, "Come on, Jimmy. Please let's just go home and discuss this like a married couple?"
Jimmy finally agreed to come with me, but on the drive home, he stuck his head out the passenger side window and yelled obscenities at any random passerby. I decided to ignore this since he was having fun, but once we got home, I was going to try and reason with him.
We got home, and Jimmy immediately ran to the kitchen and came back out with Jaeger. I took it from him before he could open it and returned it back to the cabinet.
Jimmy turned to me with a pouty look on his face. "But, Brookie! I want to drink."
I shook my head. "No, Jimmy. You've had enough tonight. You need to think about our future."
"What are you talking about?" Jimmy said crossing his arms over his chest.
"I'm talking about the fact that you have a health problem and drinking that much that soon is dangerous," I said and I rubbed my stomach. "You have two babies that are coming into this world in only six months. You need to think about that."
He rolled his eyes. "I'm always thinking about that. I'm going to be a kick ass father."
"But not if you're not here!" I shouted and I could feel tears coming to my eyes. "The doctor told you on more than one occasion that you shouldn't drink like this. I'm only trying to help you!"
"I'm fine!" Jimmy shouted back. "Nothing is going to happen to me! I can drink as much as I want and you can't say shit because you're not my mother!"
I took a step back. We were having a fight while he was drunk. I knew this wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I was worried about him.
"No, James, I'm not your mother. I'm your wife and the mother of your unborn children," I said in a quiet rage. "If you don't take me or the doctor seriously, your heart isn't going to be able to take it. Your children will have no father! I will have no husband and think about your friends! You have to think about others Jimmy!"
Before he could respond, I walked around him, grabbed my keys and walked out the door. I had to get away and calm down before I did something I really regretted.
It was already ten o'clock but I had to call the one person I knew I could go to. I pulled my phone out and dialed Val's number as I drove to her house.
"Hello?" she answered.
"Val? It's Brooke. Hey is everybody still at your house?" I asked.
"Nope. They just left and Matt is upstairs playing Call of Duty. Why? What's wrong baby?" Val asked me. I knew I could turn to her with this. Jimmy was usually my strong rock, but right now I needed a girl to lean on. I needed somebody who would listen, give me ice cream and let me cry.
"Jimmy and I had a huge fight. I'm headed your way for some girl-time-chill-out-therapy," I said wiping at my watery eyes so I could see the road.
"Of course, Brookie. My door is always open for you. And my freezer is always stocked with ice cream for times like this," Val said and it made me smile.
"Thanks, Val. I'll be there in a few," I said before I hung up.
Jimmy and I had fought even when we were just friends, but it was never like this. Before when I had told him to calm down because of his health, he would listen to me. But for some reason, the last couple of weeks he had been drinking so much and he acted like he was invincible.
I pulled up to Matt and Val's house and wiped at my eyes and cleaned up my face. I didn't want to walk in there with runny mascara.
I made my way up to the door and before I could even knock, it opened up and there stood Val in pajamas holding a gigantic bowl of mint chocolate ice cream for me.
I smiled as I took the bowl. "You are so amazing," I said as I walked into her house.
She nodded and headed for the living room. "I've already got Edward Scissorhands in the DVD player and Matt has strict instuctions to not interrupt us at any time."
I hugged her. "What would I do with out you?"
Val shrugged. "Probably go get drunk at some sleezy bar."
We sat and started to watch one of our favorite movies. By the time it got to the point where Edward was cutting the neighborhood women's hair, I was feeling so much better and ready to go home and talk to my husband.
I told Val that I wanted to get home now before I chickened out and she agreed. I was putting my shoes on when I saw Matt come down the stairs jumping them three at a time with a panicked look on his face.
When he saw me, his eyes got even wider. "Brooke, we have to go to the hospital. NOW!"
I looked at him shocked. "What are you talking about, Matt? What happened?"
"It's Jimmy!" he shouted. "He was over at Brian's after you left and he was drinking more. He collapsed, Brooke. And he wouldn't wake up."
