Promise You Paradise

Why is it always white? As if in the moment of utter confusion it was obligatory to see white, and have those bright lights shining down on you, and blinking makes it worse. You just see them on the inside of your eyelids, and a black smudge clouding your version further. I let my hand fall heavily against my forehead. I had such a headache, at least it felt like one, a very numb kind of headache. The beeping of the machines registered and I turned to look at them. I always hated hospitals. The walls, the lights, the smell and the depressing vibe that dripped from the walls. I tried to look around my room, which was a little difficult in the position I was in, with my leg hung up in a cast. I thought I’d see my mother, or my father, or Hailey. Hailey, no, Hailey was in the car.

I shot up from my laying position and yelped as a pain shot through my body. I heard a chair moving and all of a sudden there was someone next to me. I opened my eyes and looked up. It was Matt. I blinked. “What…” I let my voice trial off, since it barely had a sound to it. I shook my head slightly and cleared my throat.

“Here” Matt said, offering me a glass of water. “This will help.”

I gulped down the water feeling it relieve my achy throat, then I slowly laid back down. I felt like a mess, but if I’m awake, at least that means that I’ll be fine. How long am I gonna have to stay here? The sooner I leave this joint the better. “Hailey…” I uttered. “Where’s” I exhaled feeling all of a sudden exhausted. I closed my eyes. “Where’s Hailey?”

Matt cleared his throat. “She’s two doors down from this room, I think your dad’s in there right now. She woke up about two days ago, but she’s not allowed out of bed. She’s pretty banged up, and well Bailey, so are you. So you rest up. I’ll go get your dad. Your mom’s coming by after work or something.”

I looked up at Matt. He seemed kind of uncomfortable. “No, its fine. I’m just going to fall asleep anyways…” I reclosed because I started seeing two of Matt. I breathed slowly, in and out, in and out. “If Hay’s been awake, they’re better off with her.” I opened my eyes again and focused on Matt. “Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’ve killed me.” I tried to smile nice and wide, but I’m sure it came out as weak and small as I felt. Regardless I knew that look well, and I wasn’t going to dose off without letting Matt know this wasn’t his fault. “I know that look…”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

I smiled a little. “Let me guess, you want me to rest, so you’re going to pretend I’m wrong. Fine.” I shut my eyes and felt the exhaustion drop on me like cotton covers. “You didn’t purposely slam your car into mine.” I said. “So, it’s not your fault, it’s nobody’s fault.” I drifted off to sleep.
