The Final Decision
Chapter VIII
“NOOOO!” I screamed and fell to the ground. Zack picked me up and held me. We both cried, hysterically. We didn’t understand how our baby girl was gone.
“How could this happen?” I cried into Zack’s chest.
“Why the fuck didn’t you call the ambulance, Amber?” Zack snapped.
“She was already gone when I checked on her. I called Lex immediately.”
“They could’ve revived her, goddammit! We should’ve never trusted you!” I screamed.
“Don’t talk to me like that!” My mother screamed at me. “I did everything I could!”
“Except call the fucking ambulance! Val, please do it.” Val nodded and walked out. “Get the fuck out now.”
Not even five minutes later the ambulance was here and they were doing everything they could to bring Avery back. Zack held me as we watched them try with everything they had, but there was no hope.
“I’m so sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Baker. We’ve done everything we can.” I cried out. “We’ll take her for an autopsy, if you’d like.”
“Yes, we need to know what the cause of this was.” Zack said, voice cracking. “I’m hinting towards fucking murder.”
“Yes, sir. We’ll take her in the ambulance and you guys should hear from us soon.” Zack nodded and they took Avery away. My life was torn away from me.
“C’mon Lex. Let’s go home, okay?” I nodded and asked Val to drive my car. I got into the passenger seat of the car and leaned my head against the window and cried. Val was driving right behind us. Once we got to the house, I slowly made my way inside. I couldn’t explain what I was feeling. I just lost my child. The only child I’ll probably ever have.
“Let’s sit down here for a while. We need to let everyone know.” I nodded and sat down. Val walked in seconds later.
“Honey, here are your keys. I’m going to go get your stuff and some of mine. I’m going to stay here.” I nodded and she left.
Zack’s POV
I couldn’t believe Avery was gone. I had to stay strong and it was getting very difficult. I sat down next to Lexi and grabbed my phone. I know the guys at the studio all must be frantic wondering what the hell was going on. I dialed Matt’s number.
“Hey, what the fuck is going on?”
“Put me on speaker.”
“Okay.” I heard some noise. “Can you hear me?”
“Yeah, is everyone in there?”
“Yes. Now tell us what the fuck is going on!”
“Avery’s gone. Lex’s mom put her down for a nap and went to check on her and she wasn’t breathing. We called an ambulance and they did all they could. They took her for an autopsy, but we won’t hear anything back for a little bit.” The other end of the phone was silent. I finally heard an oh my god and some crying.
“Uh, where’s Lex? Where are you?” Matt asked.
“The house. We both are.”
“We’re coming.” Before we could protest the phone clicked. I hung up and just grabbed Lex. I held her and we both silently cried.
