The Final Decision
Chapter X
Lex’s POV
It’s been a week in a half since Avery’s funeral and I was still miserable. I’ve accepted it, though. I needed to begin my healing process. Zack and I have been distant, but I was expecting that. I knew that we needed to talk soon, but I just kept putting it off. I don’t want to tell him I cheated on him only a few weeks after he lost his daughter. I would have no heart at all. Plus, I don’t want to lose him. That’s a huge part of me putting it off. I knew exactly what was going to happen when I told him. My phone broke me out of my thoughts.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Lex. Is it okay if I come over?” Val’s voice came from the other end of the phone.
“Uh, yeah. That’s fine.” She said okay and then hung up and I made my way to the room where Zack was laying on the bed. “Hey.” I half smiled.
“Hey.”
“How are you today?” I asked. Currently, we weren’t sleeping in the same bed, so we had very little communication.
He shrugged. “I’m okay, I guess.”
“Um, Val’s going to stop by. Do you need anything?” He shook his head and I decided to just walk away. There was no use in having a conversation with him.
A few minutes later, the front door opened and Val came in holding a packet of papers. I wonder what those are.
“So I did some research and errands for you.” She said sitting down.
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yes, um, I figured with Avery’s passing you haven’t thought much about what was going on before.”
“No, I have thought a lot about it, actually. I’ve been sleeping on the couch since I came back. Zack and I aren’t talking.”
“That’s what I thought. Well I got the stuff you need.”
“The divorce papers?” I asked.
“Yes, I just had my lawyer take care of it. She basically told me for you two to sign and bring it to the courthouse.”
I sighed. “Well hopefully he won’t want this.”
“I hope so too, honey. You wanted to be prepared though.”
“Yeah, I know. I guess I better go talk to him. I better do it while I have the confidence too. If I think too much about it, I’ll freak myself out and never do it.”
She nodded. “I just wanted to bring this to you. I know you wanted them and I know you were putting it off.”
“Yeah, I was. But thank you. I appreciate it.” I stood up and gave her a hug.
“Call me if you need anything. My door is always open.”
I smiled at her. “Thank you. I’ll call you later.” She nodded and then walked out. I shakily made my way upstairs with the packet of papers in my hand. Zack was still sitting exactly the same as when I left him before.
“We need to talk, Zee.” He looked over at me.
“About what?”
“You know what.” I sighed. “Come downstairs.” He nodded and I walked back down to the living room and sat on the couch. A few seconds later Zack was sitting right next to me.
“So, what happened?” He asked.
I sighed. “Okay, well the night of our party I got wasted. I don’t remember anything, but I did lie to you. I didn’t wake up on Brian’s couch. I woke up in his bed. I woke up in his bed naked. Zack, I’m sorry, but I did cheat on you. And before you flip the fuck out, which you have a right too, I wanted to go ahead and hand you these.” I handed them the papers. “They’re divorce papers, because I know you’ll want it.”
Zack was silent for a moment. “So I was right?” His voice cracked.
I nodded. “Yes, you were.”
“And you left and made me look like the fucking bad guy?”
“Yes.”
“What the fuck, Lex?!” His voice raised. He stood up. “Get out.”
“What?” I looked at him confused.
“Get. Out!” He pointed towards the door.
“You don’t even want to talk about this?!” I yelled.
“What the fuck is there to talk about?! You cheated on me. That’s all I needed to know.”
“So you do want the divorce?” My voice cracked.
“Right now, yes. Am I going to make any drastic fucking decisions while I’m angry? No. Now, please, just get out. Go stay wherever you were staying before. I need space and I need time.” I nodded and went and packed a bag up. Once I got it packed I made my way out of the house without even looking or talking to Zack. Once I was in my car, I called Val.
“Hey, sweetie. I just got home. That was quick. What happened?”
“Um, he kicked me out.”
“What? Are you serious?”
“Yeah, I’ll explain the whole thing when I get there. Is it still okay for me to stay there?”
“Of course it is.”
“Thank you.” I hung up and drove over to her house. Once I got there, I grabbed my bag and walked up to the door and knocked. She opened it and let me in.
“So tell me what happened.”
“Well I told him about that night and he flipped. He just asked rhetorical questions and then asked me to get out.”
“So you guys are getting a divorce?”
“I don’t know. He said right now he wants one but he’s not going to make any drastic decisions.”
“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry Lex.”
“I was expecting it completely. I deceived him.”
“Yeah, but still.”
“There’s nothing I can do. I can only let it play out and only hope for the best.” I sighed and lay back on the couch.
