Chapter Thirteen

I opened my door and jumped out of the car as Matt yelled at me to get back in. "Ma'am, I need to ask you to get back in your car," an officer said, walking up to me.

I looked at the officer to see it was one of my classmates. "What's going on Wolfie?" I asked calling him by his nickname, completely ignoring his previous instructions.

"Someone broke into the call center," he briefed me.

"How?" I asked, still confused.

"Broke through the second floor windows," Wolfie pointed towards the broken windows.

"How the frick did they get up there?" I muttered , moodily. "Are they still going to take calls or are they switching them to the other call centers?"

"Sending them over, I guess," Wolfie shrugged.

I nodded. "They still in there?" I asked, softly, holding my hand to my face tying to block out the sun as I searched the broken glass for signs of life. Wolfie paused for a second then nodded, "Yeah,"

With that confirmation, I walked quickly back to the car. "Thanks Wolfe," I said, calling him by his last name.

"Drive...now," I ordered Matt once I was in the car, keeping my voice in check.

We were halfway home before Matt decided to let me know my constant looking behind us, was making it hard to do the speed limit. "Is something following us?" Matt finished his somewhat lengthy rant a couple blocks later.

I was quiet for a couple seconds, before replying, "Not yet,"

Matt stared out the window ahead of us, his jaw clenched, as he tightened his grip on the steering wheel, making me nervous. I mean from what I've seen and heard, he's a really nice guy, but I still didn't trust him completely...yet.

"Listen," I started out quietly, not looking at him. "I can understand if you're having second thoughts about me. Really, I do," I looked at him, as he glanced at me in disbelief. "I mean, look at me...I'm a freak,"

"No you're not," Matt interrupted me. "Do you know how many people would kill to be in your position?"

I gave Matt a weak smile. His intentions were meant well, but he had just delivered it wrong. "I'm not sure they'd enjoy the poking and prodding to get them," I replied, trying to joke back, but my voice came out too serious.

Matt seemed to sense this, and changed his tone. "Well, I mean, in all seriousness, you're unique, and you should be happy with the unique gifts you possess,"

I gave Matt another small smile as we pulled into the gas station close to my house.

"See, there's a smile," Matt pointed at me, right before he got outside.

We got to my house a couple minutes after we gassed up. The guys were surprised that I wasn't at work. "Someone broke into the call center, " I explained to them as Karla and Alex walked into the room.

"What do you mean someone broke into the contact center. That place is terrorist proof," Karla stated, incredously.

"Broke through the second floor windows," I replied, nonchalantly.

"But, there's no way to get to those windows without a ladder," Alex pointed out.

I gave Alex and Karla a weak smile, as their brains clicked with the only plausible answer. Karla jumped on me a few seconds later. "They're not taking you away!" she yelled, hugging me to her.

"Can't...breath," I gasped, trying to loosen Karla's grip.

"Karla, calm down," Alex chided Karla. "They're not taking either of them, because we're going to stop them."

Karla slowly released her grip around my neck as she thought of the multiple things they could do to keep me and Hazel safe. "You guys really don't need to do anything for me," I started, trying to keep them from getting themselves killed.

"Well, too bad," Alex rolled her eyes at me.

"Seriously," I tried again.

"Too bad," Karla growled at me, ending my retorts about them.

"We can help too," Matt suggested, shrugging.

I shook my head no, "Now that's were I draw the line,"

"Why can't we help?" Matt asked, about ready to tear his hair out.

"Because they're a lot stronger than you!" I shouted at him my hands balled into fists. "You don't get it! They can easily kill you...with a flick of a wrist! You're not experienced in fighting something as strong as them. Only an experienced fighter would be able to fight them, and even then it would be pure luck that they won. Hell, I can barely fight them," I ended in a whisper, tears in my eyes.

"Why are they helping, then?" Jimmy asked, clearly offended I had just called all of them weak.

"Because they know how to fight them, without getting hurt," I explained, calming down, slowly. "they've helped me a lot with this and they know what they're up against,"

"I still don't see why not," Matt crossed his arms.

"Ugh!" I threw my hands in the air. "Go sit at the table, we're arm wrestling," I ordered Matt.

"How's that going to prove anything?" Brian asked as Matt sat at the dining room table, waiting for me to join him.

"You'll see, "I muttered under my breath as I joined Matt. I took Matt's hand and braced myself.

"Ready?" Karla asked, waiting for Matt and I to shake our heads yes. "Go!"
