This Is How It Goes

During the first Nightmare on elm Street Ellie was grabbing my hand a lot. Jimmy really must have given her a fright with this movie because she jumped even when the suspenseful music led to nothing. Then came the scene where Johnny Depp’s character fell asleep. Ellie went from holding my hand to holding me with her face buried in my neck. Suddenly everyone screamed and I saw why that scene would freak Ellie out so much. I held her head and rubbed her back softly. The scene finished but Ellie didn’t move away. Instead she cuddled up to my side and lent her head on my shoulder the away she did whenever we watched movies. I kept my arm on her back as she held my other hand.
“You okay Elle?” I asked as she nodded.
“Yeah, I just feel more comfortable when I watch movies with you.” Ellie whispered as I smiled.
“I love watching movies with you.” I whispered as she blushed. I looked over at Zacky who wasn’t even watching the movie anymore. He was just glaring at me holding Ellie. I smiled as I took her hat off of her and put it on myself making Ellie laugh. We sat quietly hugging with the occasional jump from Ellie until the movie finished. There were twenty minute intervals between the movies so we had time to talk. As soon as the movie finished Zacky lent over.

“Hey Ellie.” Zacky said. Ellie pulled away from me and turned to Zacky. “Do you want to come outside for some fresh air?” Zacky asked. Ellie looked at us then nodded and followed Zacky who was holding Ellie’s hand. I sighed and Val patted my back.
“You okay Brian?” Val asked.
“He confronted me at the snack bar and told me to back off.” I said.
“And who died and made him king? Ellie will date who she wants.” Matt asked.
“If he liked her so much he should have said something by now.” I said.
“Let him do whatever he wants, she doesn’t like him Brian. Not like she likes you.” Val said.
“Yeah but I’d still follow them and see what happens.” Matt said as I got up and went outside. I stood in the cinema and could see Ellie and Zacky sitting on a bench as he had a cigarette. Ellie was sitting next to him. She shivered and Zacky wrapped his arm around her.

“You want a drag?” Zacky asked as Ellie shook her head.
“No thanks Zacky.” Ellie said as Zacky finished the cigarette and turned back to Ellie.
“Ellie, there’s something I have to tell you.” Zacky said.
“What is it Zee?” Ellie said as Zacky’s face blushed red.
“Ellie, we have been friends since we were little and I want you to know that I like you.” Zacky said.
“Aw Zacky, I like you too.” Ellie said as I felt myself go cold.
“No I mean I love you Ellie.” Zacky said as Ellie bit her lip.
“I really like you Zacky but I don’t want to date anyone at the moment. I want to focus on my grades.” Ellie said as Zacky looked away.
“You don’t feel the same” Zacky said sounding hurt as Ellie sighed.

“Zacky I don’t want to lead you on okay? I’d rather be honest than hurt you later on.” Ellie said.
“You know I’m not the only person that likes you.” Zacky said. “Brian likes you as well.” Zacky said as Ellie’s draw dropped.
“You’re kidding me.” Ellie said as Zacky looked up and saw her face.
“So that’s who you like? You like Brian? What does he have that I don’t?” Zacky asked.
“I don’t know Zee. I can trust him with anything.” Ellie said as I saw Zacky let out a few tears. Ellie pulled out her hankie and wiped away Zacky’s tears. “Zacky I’m sorry.” Ellie said. Suddenly Zacky took Ellie in a tight hug and kissed her cheek softly. I could feel my blood boiling as I held back.
“I love you Elle, you’re all I want.” Zacky said as Ellie sighed.
“Come on, let’s go back and watch the movies.” Ellie said as she kissed Zacky’s cheek and I felt a cold wave wash over me. She kissed his cheek. Was that out of guilt or was she too afraid of hurting him and just going to go along with it? I quickly ran to the mens bathroom before they saw me. I walked back in a few minutes after them. As soon as I sat down the movie started.

During Freddy’s Revenge Ellie was fine. At some points she was even silently quoting the movie. She only jumped a few times. Every now and then Zacky would lean over and whisper something to Ellie about what was happening in the movie. I couldn’t hear but I saw him pointing. Even though they weren’t kissing and cuddling it was still getting under my skin. Finally the movie ended and Val whispered something to Matt. Matt nodded as he stood up and stretched.
“I’m going to go get some more food. You want anything Val?” Matt asked.
“Just some candy. Ooh jelly beans!” Val said.
“Anyone else coming?” Matt asked.
“Yeah I need some food.” Zacky said as he got up. “Want anything Ellie?” Zacky asked.
“No I’m fine, Brian and I went to Ruby’s before coming here and I’ve already had popcorn and soda.” Ellie said.
“Really? How nice.” Zacky said as he stormed out of the cinema. Ellie sighed and shook her head.

“What’s up with Zacky?” I asked pretending to sound concerned about him.
“He told me he loves me. That was weird, I had an idea that he liked me but not loved me. Then I told him that I didn’t feel the same about him and he got upset.” Ellie said.
“Sounds like Zacky needs to learn to respect your honesty and let it go.” I said.
“I just don’t want to lead him on when I have feelings for someone else.” Ellie said.
“And who would that be. Come on, you can trust me.” I said as she shook her head.
“No Bri, I just can’t.” She said. I held her hand and smiled.
“Well whoever he is, he is lucky to have someone like you wanting him.” I said.
“Why is he lucky?” Ellie said. I sighed and looked her in the eyes.
“Because you would make the most amazing girlfriend on the planet.” I said as she turned red.
“Hey Brian, can we switch seats so I can talk to Ellie?” Val asked winking as I caught on.
“Sure, if that’s okay with Ellie.” I said as Ellie nodded. Quickly I moved to Matt’s seat, Ellie moved to Val’s, Val moved to mine and sat Matt’s hat on Ellie’s chair leaving Zacky sitting next to Matt far away from Ellie. When Zacky came back he looked at us confused.

“Why did everyone do a complete switch of chairs?” Zacky asked.
“We decided to play a game of musical chairs.” Val laughed.
“But I was sitting with Ellie.” Zacky said as Matt pushed past Zacky getting annoyed.
“Come on man, just sit down and watch the damn movie.” Matt said as he sat down and gave Val a drink and her jelly beans. Zacky sat reluctantly but eventually started talking to Matt. Thanks to Val, Ellie and I got to watch the rest of the movies without being interrupted by Zacky. We were watching Dream Warriors when this character Phillip was cut open and turned into a human mannequin. But instead of hugging me Ellie brought her knees up to her chest, wrapped her arms around her knees and hid her face behind her arms. I saw Val squeeze Ellie’s hand and when the scene was over and Ellie looked up she had tears in her eyes. Ellie kept her emotions pretty well hidden and it was extremely rare to see her cry. She put her feet back down and as soon as her hand was by her side I held it and rubbed my thumb against her palm.

“Ellie, are you okay?” I asked quietly.
“Yeah I’m fine.” Ellie lied.
“Ellie, you’re crying. You’re not fine.” I said as she shook her head.
“I’ll tell you about it later.” Ellie said as I hugged her.
“Don’t think I’m going to forget, we will talk about it tomorrow.” I said as Ellie nodded. We watched the last three movies with Ellie falling asleep on my shoulder half way through Freddy’s Dead. I softly lent my chin against her head and breathed in the smell of rosewater and I smiled. This was all I wanted. I knew I had to tell her, I just didn’t know how. The last movie finished and the lights came back on. I rubbed Ellie’s arm softly as she woke up and stretched.

“What did I miss?” Ellie asked as I smiled.
“About the last half an hour.” I said as we all got up. We walked outside to see the sun shining as we all groaned and covered our eyes.
“How did we last the whole six movies?” Val asked.
“You slept through parts of them.” Matt said.
“I’m kinda hungry for breakfast.” Ellie said as there were groans of agreeing.
“McDonalds breakfast anyone?” Matt asked.
“Sounds good to me.” I said as Matt, Val and Zacky got in Matt’s car while Ellie and I got in my car and went to McDonalds. We walked in and sat down while we decided what to order. I went to ask Ellie what she wanted but Zacky sat next to her and gave her a tight hug.

“What do you feel like Ellie? I’ll buy your breakfast.” Zacky said.
“It’s okay Zacky, I have some money.” Ellie said as Zacky shook her head.
“Not listening. Now what do you feel like?” Zacky asked.
“A strawberry thickshake and an egg muffin.” Ellie said as Zacky walked off to the counter.
“Man, someone is determined.” Val said as Ellie sighed.
“I told him I’m not interested and he doesn’t seem to want to listen.” Ellie said.
“I’ll try and have a talk to him later.” Matt said as Zacky returned. Matt, Val and I went and got our meals and returned to the table. We sat and talked until Ellie looked at her watch.
“Crap, I told my parents I’d be home by nine and its eight thirty. Dad will kill me.” Ellie said.
“Really? They let you have an eight am curfew?” Zacky asked surprised.
“No, I told them where I was going and they understood it wouldn’t finish until around seven so I told them I would be home by nine” Ellie said.
“Come on then. I’ll take you home.” I said.
“Okay. Bye guys.” Ellie said giving them all a hug as we walked out to my car. We drove back to Ellie’s house singing along to The Offspring. Ellie absolutely loved them and I myself was a fan. I loved listening to Ellie’s voice, she didn’t sing much but she had a great voice. We got to her house as we walked up to her house.

“I had a lot of fun today and yesterday. I wasn’t the biggest Nightmare on Elm Street fan before but you definitely changed that. Even though maybe nine hours was a little long, next time we watch a maximum of two at a time.” I said as Ellie laughed.
“Well at least it was shorter than a Star Wars marathon,” Ellie said as I smiled.
“Well that’s true. So you want to hang out tonight? Matt was thinking of having us all over and drinking.” I said as Ellie nodded.
“A party sounds great. Message me the details.” She said as we got to her front step. I gave her a tight hug and then pulled away. I looked at Ellie and I just knew I couldn’t wait any longer. I moved closer and slid my arms around Ellie’s neck.
“Ellie.” I said as I moved my face closer to the point I could feel her breath on my cheek.
“Yes Brian?” Ellie asked, her face a little pink. I lent it and at that moment her dad opened the door. I heard a slight groan from Ellie as I quickly pulled away.

“Wow, you’re earlier than curfew. Good to know I can trust Brian to get you home on time. Morning Brian.” Ellie’s dad said as I smiled and waved.
“Morning sir.” I said as Ellie smiled weakly.
“Have either of you seen James? He was meant to be home by one.” Ellie’s dad said.
“No I haven’t seen him yet.” Ellie said as her dad shook his head.
“That boy is on my last nerve.” Her dad said as he walked off inside. Ellie stepped inside smiled at me weakly as I gave her a last hug.
“See you later?” Ellie asked as I nodded.
“ Yeah, see you at Matt’s.” I said as Ellie closed the door and I walked off to my car, got in and drove home annoyed at myself. I was so close.
