The Skies Have Washed Ashore

I feel a sin comin' on

Vacaville, CA 10:00 A.M.

My alarm clock on my phone went off and I slowly but surely slid the bar to shut it off. Rubbing my eyes, I sat up and went through my normal routine of getting ready for the day. I stood in the door length mirror looking over my outfit to make sure it was decent for the occasion and nodded at my appearance.

I had to make sure they got a good image of who I was and what I was about, and what better way than to show off my beautiful art. I admired the images that adorned my body for a minute and walked away from the mirror.

I grabbed all of my bags and called my dad to help me take them downstairs. My mom was, surprisingly, still home and sitting at the table with a cup of coffee in front of her.

“Mom, why aren’t you at work?”

“I wanted to see you off, honey. I called in and told them that I would be running a little late because of an early appointment. A little lie never hurt anyone.”

Yeah, you would know.

“Oh, well thanks, but it’s not like I’m not coming back.” “I know, but I wanted to wish you good luck because I know how excited you are about meeting your family. So, have a safe trip and let them know that we said hello.”

“Okay, mom, will do.”

She stood up to hug me tightly and kiss my cheek. My dad helped me out to the car and put all my bags in the trunk. “Well, like your mother said, I want to wish you good luck and a safe trip. Make sure you come back now.”

“I will, I will. Hey, can you do me a favor and check on the shop and Jacoby while I’m gone, dad?”

“I’ll do anything for you, baby girl. Now, it’s getting late and you should get on the road. That’s a pretty lengthy trip you’ve got ahead of you.”

I nodded and squeezed him tightly while he chuckled and kissed the top of my head. I waved and got in the car, starting it up and letting the sounds of Straight Line Stitch blast through my eight speakers as I backed out and began the trip to Huntington.

Huntington Beach, CA 12:25 A.M.

There were cars lined up in the driveway and people running around the inside of Brian Haner Sr.’s residence. They were all excited for the arrival of the newest Haner, Alliyah. Suzy and all the Avenged girls were in the kitchen helping to make food and snacks, while the boys were helping Papa Gates set the table and tidy up the place a bit.

“I can’t wait to see what she looks like!” Jimmy yelled, throwing a pillow to hit Johnny in the face. “Come on man, stop throwing stuff at me! That’s like the third time," Johnny whined.

“There are many more to come, my short friend,” Jimmy giggled. Matt rolled his eyes and threw away some small pieces of trash. “I just hope you freaks don’t scare her away,” he said with a smile.

“If anything, she’ll be scared of you, you big monster,” Zacky commented, fixing the pillows that Jimmy just messed up for the second time.

“Oh God, what if she looks just. like. Brian?!” Jimmy yelled.

“That would be so sad.” They all laughed and Papa Gates slapped them in the head. “Hey now, no insulting my children, at least not while I’m standing here. Let’s see, is there anything else that needs to be done?” They guys all groaned and fell onto the chairs nearest to them.

“Wow, you guys are a trip. I’m going to go take a shower and change my clothes. Keep the house clean, guys. Hopefully, Brian will stop being a little bitch and actually show up.” Once again, the boys erupted in a fit of laughter while the eldest Haner male trudged his way up the stairs.

“Man, Papa Gates is one cool motherfucker,” Zacky said, messing with his phone. “Yeah, I wish my dad was half as cool as he was,” Jimmy sighed. The girls came in and sat down their men respectively while both Suzy and McKenna sat on the love seat.

“I really hope that she isn’t what Brian thinks she is, or else I’ll have to kill a bitch,” Michelle stated and everyone looked at her.

“What do you mean? What did he say?”

“He thinks that she’s going to be stuck up, prissy, act like she’s had a silver spoon in her mouth all her life, lazy, good for nothing, shall I go on?”

“Geez, how can you say all that about someone you don’t even know?” Gena asked.

“That’s the same thing I said! I told him he was just being jealous that the attention wouldn’t always be on him now.”

“That sounds about right. I’m sure she’s nothing like that. Sure, Vacaville’s a really nice part of Cali, but not everyone from there is like that,” Matt explained. Everyone nodded and just enjoyed the time they were having before Alliyah showed up.

Huntington Beach, CA 1:32 P.M.

I brought my car to a stop in front of the gorgeous home that belonged to my birth father. There were a few cars here and my heart began to race as I double checked my appearance in my visor mirror. Grabbing my bag, I got out of the car and walked up to the door to knock on it.

Taking a few deep breaths and shifting my weight between both feet, I‘d managed to calm down somewhat. The door opened and I came face to face with Brian Haner Sr. I took in his features and compared them to my own mentally. He was definitely my sperm donor.

“Are you…Alliyah?” “Yes, I am. It’s nice to meet you…I don’t really know what to call you.”

“You can call me Papa Gates, sweetheart, everyone else does. Please come inside.” He moved over and ushered me inside. I followed behind him nervously, knowing that one of my favorite bands was in the other room, waiting to meet me. I just hoped Brian liked me.

“Are you nervous, Alliyah?”

“Please call me Alli, or any other ridiculous nickname you can come with and yes, I’m very nervous, actually.”

“Well, you shouldn’t be. Everyone’s excited to meet you.” We walked into what I assumed was the living room and I stopped dead in my tracks at the sight before me.

The boys of Avenged were wrestling with each other and all the women were huddled in a corner watching them go at it. Papa Gates growled and coughed, making everyone stop and look up at us. The boys quickly untangled themselves and got situated on the couches and the girls sat down as well.

“Would you like to introduce yourself or would you like me to?”

“Nah, I got it.” I stepped into the living room and put a smirk on my face.

“Hello everyone, my name’s Alliyah Lewis and it’s nice to meet all of you.”

“Oh my god, she has Syn’s smirk!” The lead singer yelled, pointing at me. “Didn’t your mother ever tell you it was rude to point?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Uh, well, yeah.” “Then why are you still pointing at me?” He dropped his hand and looked at the ground. Chuckling, I slapped a big ass smile on my face and walked over to him, pulling him into a hug.

“I’m just kidding. It’s nice to finally meet you, Matt.” He pulled away from me and looked at me surprised. “You already know who I am?”

“Did you forget that you were apart of a famous rock band or what?” He shrugged and I looked at everyone else. They all went around saying their names and giving me hugs and smiles. My step-mother walked up to me and pulled me into a warm hug.

“It’s so nice to meet you, Alliyah.” “Dear, she wants us to, and I quote ‘please call her Alli or some other ridiculous nickname you can come up with.’”

“I’m sorry. It’s so nice to meet you, Alli.” I smiled and hugged her back. “The same to you.”

I pulled away and I was met with a hug from the youngest girl in the room, who I assumed was McKenna. “Hi, McKenna right?” “That’s right. I hope you’re cooler than Brian. You don’t seem like any of the things he said.” My eyebrows scrunched up I confusion.

I turned to see Zacky doing the cut off sign and he stopped when he saw that I was looking. “What do you mean, seem like any of the things he said?” I asked slowly.

“Well, he said that-”

“That’s enough, Mickey. Don’t worry about it, Alli.” “No, it’s okay. I’m a tough girl. What did he say, McKenna?”

“He said that you would be stuck up, prissy, good for nothing, and that you’d act like you went through life with a silver spoon in your mouth.” My jaw clenched at her words, but I didn’t show my anger.

“Well, I just want to let you all know that I’m none of those things. I work hard for what I have and I appreciate what is given to me. Now, speaking of my dear brother, would anyone happen to know where he is?”

They all shook their heads and looked down. “He said that he didn’t want to meet you. He’s thoroughly convinced himself that you’re all of those things,” Michelle told me shamefully.

I felt my heart sink at those words and I felt arms wrap around me. I looked up to see Papa Gates smiling at me.

“Don’t worry about your brother, sweetie. We’re all glad you’re here and we want to make the most of it.” I smiled at him and nodded.

“Alright then, let’s get this party started!”

“That’s what I’m talking about!” Jimmy yelled. I giggled at his antics and he just blushed.

I had a feeling I was going to like it here with or without Brian Haner Jr.
