Promises Broken and Words Left Unspoken

Christmas Plans and Secret Conversations

Brian’s P.O.V
It had been a few weeks since Madi was let out of the hospital. She hated using crutches and I felt bad watching her gimp around. What made it worse, was that I felt it was all my fault she was in this condition. I mean, the light had been green… So it really wasn’t my fault but that didn’t stop me from feeling like it was my fault. I stopped in front of her house and waited for her to walk out. She had been excited that it was almost winter break. I smiled as she gimped her way up to the car. She put the crutches in the back seat and let herself into the passenger seat. “Hi Brian,” She stated softly. She seemed upset about something.

“What’s wrong Madi?” I asked softly as she smiled weakly.

“It’s not something huge. I’m just frustrated with the way this thing is working out… And on top of it this is gonna be the first Christmas without my brother. And I guarantee my dad won’t show up for Christmas either,” She stated with a sigh. “And I really don’t want to spend Christmas by myself,” I nodded in understanding and took her hand with mine as I drove us to school. I parked and placed my parking tag in view and went around to help Madi out. She leaned on me lightly as I pulled out her crutches.

“I’m sorry. I’m sure my parents would be happy to have you over for Christmas,” I stated with a small smile. I really didn’t want her upset. She smiled at me as she took her crutches. She kissed my cheek and then spoke up.

“I don’t want to impose,” She said before adding. “But it’s really sweet of you to offer,” I cut her off by putting a finger to her lips.

“Please? For me? My family is scary on Christmas,” My eyes widened as I mocked a scared face. She giggled before hugging me and gimping away. “Don’t you gimp away from me, Madison,” I stated in a jokingly stern tone. She laughed again as she waited for me to catch up. “Thank you,” I stated as we walked towards the courtyard.

When we walked up to the table; Matt was talking about his science homework with Val, who was trying to explain it. Meanwhile, Zacky, Jimmy and Johnny were looking over a piece of paper. “Hi guys,” Madi stated softly as she sat down. I looked across the courtyard to see Amy talking with the cheerleaders and glaring towards us. She had been pissed that it wasn’t just me who no longer liked her. None of the guys or Val would talk to her unless we had to… like for a class.

Madi pulled out a note book and went back to a paper she’d been going back to for awhile. She won’t let me near it. All I’ve been able to see on it is the title: Emma’s Song. She had explained one night… it had been the anniversary of Emma’s death. She had snapped at Val and then apologized saying that the day was a bad one. She frowned in frustration and closed the notebook before looking off into the distance. I held her hand lightly and got her attention before walking her to her first class.

After school we met back up by the table in the courtyard. I saw Matt was bent over Madi’s notebook with her. He was muttering something quietly and she was nodding with a warm smile. She threw her arms around him and thanked him happily. I now felt very confused.
