Scream
Silence
Brian.
His arms were tight around my waist and I couldn't move without waking him. I relaxed and moved a little closer to him, feeling his bare chest against my back through my shirt. Luckily, his eyes opened only seconds later.
"Hey, baby," he whispered, tightening his grip a bit more.
"Hey," I murmured back. He sensed my feeling of guilt and disgust right away and sat up, bringing me with him.
"Please don't say you hate me," he said almost pleadingly. I stared down for a few seconds.
"I don't." He let out a sigh of relief. "But we're blood related, Brian. What we did..."
"Is wrong," he finished. "I know." The doorbell rang and Brian got up, pulling his jeans on. He walked out and I watched him disappear down the hall, sighing. I couldn't deny it, Brian was sexy. All those tattoos? And the nose piercing? Hot. As. Hell.
"Hey, bro," Brian greeted someone. One of the guys.
"Hey, Syn." It was Matt. "Can I stay here for the day? Val is having one of those days..." Brian chuckled.
"Yeah, it's all good." They started walking down the hall and Matt appeared in the doorway.
"Hey, Court. What are you doing in Brian's bed?" He looked a little confused. Who knew what was going through his head?
"She had a nightmare, so I let her sleep in my room last night," Brian said smoothly. It was like he'd rehearsed it.
"Oh," Matt said, looking at me. "Can we go down to the studio? Just to do some brainstorming?" Brian nodded and walked past him to the stairs that led to the studio in the basement. Matt smiled one last time at me and followed. I got up quietly and crept down after them, sitting at the top of the staircase where they couldn't see me so I could listen to what they played. Right now, they were talking. About me.
"Don't you think she's a bit old for that, Bri," Matt asked. "She's 14, you're 28..."
"I'm her brother, Matt," Brian retorted. "I would never do anything that a brother wouldn't do." He paused. "Plus it was the nightmare." Matt looked at him with a surprised look on his face.
"Are you serious?" Brian nodded. "I thought she stopped having that years ago."
"I thought so, too, but she woke up in the middle of the night screaming and crying." Brian looked as if it were all real. The pain in his eyes, the guilt... as if it all really happened this morning. "She wasn't exactly sure of what was going on, but she kept saying, 'I can't sleep here, I can't sleep here,' so I carried her to my room."
"Being carried didn't wake her up?" Brian shook his head. "That night really fucked her up. It's like every night she's gonna be taken back to that highway."
"I know. It kills me every time it happens..." They went on to a different topic, so I went back upstairs and walked around, looking for something to do. I decided to lie down on the couch and watch TV. After about two hours, Brian and Matt came back up, but I was too zoned out to notice at first.
"Courtney," Brian snapped his fingers in front of my face. I jumped and looked up at him. He looked oddly at me first, but then looked normal. "You okay?" I nodded and returned my absent-minded gaze to the TV. He stared at me for a short second then sat at the dining table with Matt. They talked about random stuff until an hour later when Valary called Matt asking him to come home.
"All right, I'll be home in ten minutes. Okay, bye,' he said, hanging the phone up.
"I'm guessing she's better," Brian asked.
"I dunno, I'll text you later and tell you what her problem was." Matt walked over and kissed the top of my head. He always did that when he left. "Bye, Courtney. I hope you feel better." I smiled at him without saying anything, so he returned it. He left and Brian kneeled down in front of me.
"Is this what you're gonna do all day," he asked. I shrugged. He didn't answer as he stood back up and did things around the house. That's pretty much how the whole day went. When dinner time came, he made me something and set it on the coffee table without a word. I ate as much as I could, which wasn't much, but he just took the plate and put it in the dishwasher. When it got to eleven o' clock that night, he stopped his busy walk around and looked at me.
"Are you sleeping on the couch tonight?" I shook my head. "When do you plan on going to your own bed?" I shrugged. He sighed and turned the light off. He sat down on the edge of the sofa. "I'll wait for you to go to bed, I'm not leaving you out here." I didn't even acknowledge him as I stared at the rerun of Family Guy. As soon as it was over at midnight, I just got up and went to my room. Brian didn't say anything as I heard him down the hall turning the TV and lights off. I heard his feet against the wooden floorboards as he reached my door and stopped. He walked in slowly and leaned down to kiss my forehead.
"Goodnight, Courtney," he whispered against my skin. I remained silent as he walked out, heading to his room for the night. I suddenly felt terrible for not speaking to him practically all day. The feeling went away as soon as I shut my eyes.

"Courtney, wake up," Brian said urgently, trying to stop me from moving. "Come on, baby, wake up for me." I opened my eyes and felt my heart pounding in my chest, seeing a tear in my sheet. I looked at him, not sure what to say. He sighed like he had earlier. "You had it again. The nightmare."
