Savior
Chapter 2
The next morning Maddie was woken up by the harsh sunlight coming in through the window, she turned to look at her clock and saw it was 8:00 AM. She rolled back over and groaned; debating with herself whether to get up or just go back to sleep, for what would inevitably be the whole morning. In the end she managed to convince herself to get up and get changed into a T-shirt and shorts over a bikini before heading to the beach. She walked along the road, breathing in all the city smells. It was a Sunday, and there was hardly anyone around as it was still early, and so the town still had a sleepy feel to it. She got to the beach and looked around; there were a dozen surfers or so and the odd dog walker but no one else. She sat down on the sand and watched the people in the sea. There was one guy who seemed to be showing everyone up with his surfing, he was quite far out so she couldn’t see much of him. She’d been watching him for about 20 minutes when he started to come out of the sea with his board. She then traced shapes in the sand absentmindedly whilst thinking about the previous night; she wondered if Matt really would call or if in getting her number he was just being polite. As she was thinking she was suddenly in the shadow of someone standing before her, she looked up angrily to tell them to get out of her sunlight before gasping to see Matt standing before her.
“Fancy seeing you here,” he said smirking “are you stalking me or something?”
“Ha Ha,” she said un-amused “you wish. I came to see the beach for the first time before it got too crowded actually.”
“So how’d you like it?” he asked sitting next to her on the sand. She was acutely aware of the water dripping off his body, without a shirt she could see the tattoos on his chest; he’d clearly seen her staring and said “hello?” with a smug look on his face.
“Oh, yeah it’s great” she said quickly, blushing and looking down. There was a few seconds of silence before she added, “I saw your surfing by the way, very impressive.” He chuckled,
“Thanks, I come here all the time and surf, it’s one of my favourite things to do in the world. Can you?”
“What surf?” she asked incredulously, “Oh God no, I can just about swim but that’s as far as it goes I’m afraid. I wish I could though, it looks so fun.”
“Well maybe I could teach you?” he said. She stared at him, to see if he was being serious. He stood up, “Come on Maddie, it’ll be good.” He held out his hand for her to take, smiling.
“I’m still not sure about this Matt…” she said, now ankles deep in the sea in her bikini. “Seriously I’ll be really crap.”
He laughed, waist deep in the water himself, “you’ll be great, just trust me!”
He persuaded her eventually and then proceeded to tell her how to lie on the board and stand up, like he’d told her when they were on the sand. They went out further and she lay on the board waiting for a wave with him swimming next to her.
“Ooh there’s one coming now,” he said “remember what I told you!”
“Oh fuck.” She said as she saw the size of it. He started shouting stuff for her to do but she couldn’t hear over the noise of the wave. Before she even had a chance to try and stand up the water had forced her off her board and flipped her into the sea. She resurfaced only to hear him laughing at her from a few feet away. She gave him a stare before he apologized, still laughing.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry it wasn’t funny. No one gets it on their first go, let’s keep trying.” They kept trying, and eventually she stood up shakily for less than a second, before falling off backwards, arms flailing. Another wave came up and rolled over her, preventing her from reaching the surface, she tried to swim up but a strong arm grabbed her from behind and pulled her up, as she gasped for air.
“Maddie are you OK?” Matt asked turning her around, looking concerned, his arm still tight around her waist, their bodies close together.
“Uhh…Uh, yes I’m fine,” she said, his eyes so close to hers she couldn’t help but look into them. “That was fun,” she grinned. He smiled widely, their lips were just inches apart. Keeping their eyes locked, he moved his face towards hers very slowly; he paused and then gently pressed his lips to hers as she closed her eyes. Much too soon he pulled away, smiling as he saw her face; clearly angry he’d ended the kiss. He then pulled her out of the water, on to the sand.
“I’m glad you enjoyed yourself,” he said smirking.
“I hope you did too,” Maddie said to him.
“What do you think?” he replied as he turned her chin up and kissed her gently, but not as softly as before. After a few seconds he pulled away again and smiled down at her. “What are you doing later?” he asked.
“Nothing that I’m aware of” she said grinning.
“Well you’re coming out with me; I’ll pick you up at 7.” He said. After asking where she lived he turned and walked down the beach, leaving her standing at the edge of the water, still wondering if what had just happened was real.

“What do you think?” he replied as he turned her chin up and kissed her gently, but not as softly as before. After a few seconds he pulled away again and smiled down at her. “What are you doing later?” he asked.

“Well you’re coming out with me; I’ll pick you up at 7.” He said. After asking where she lived he turned and walked down the beach, leaving her standing at the edge of the water, still wondering if what had just happened was real.
