Savior
Chapter 1
Maddie looked excitedly out of the windshield at the Orange County scenery. It was a typically hot day and the sun drenched the whole landscape in light; she sighed happily, looking around at her new hometown. In her happy daze she hadn’t noticed that she’d actually gotten lost.
“Shit.” She mumbled, fumbling around the passenger seat for directions to her new apartment in Huntington Beach. She managed to find her way onto the road she was looking for, along the seafront. She gasped as she saw the light reflecting on the waves and contemplated how her new life would turn out. Life in Ohio had been far from exciting, and she longed for something new and different. She finally managed to navigate her way through the town, and pulled up outside the apartment building and started to take her things inside. She hadn’t brought much; she’d wanted to leave as many reminders of her childhood behind. Life with an alcoholic mother and no father is far from fun, as she’d found out the hard way. Maddie shook her head, trying not to think about the past and focused on getting her stuff in her scarcely furnished new home. Once she’d unpacked everything, she plopped down on the sofa and sighed, debating whether to go out or not. Her first instinct had been definitely no… but this was her new life, why not do something she wouldn’t normally? Before she had time to think about it further, she grabbed her keys and left.
She walked for about 10 minutes until she found a nice looking bar. She went in and sat at the bar; the girl working there brought her a beer. As she said thank you, a man sitting on the other side of the bar looked up. The light was quite low, but his eyes immediately drew her in. They were the most gorgeous eyes she had ever seen; hazel and so deep she felt she could see into him. She didn’t know how long they’d been looking at each other, but she quickly looked down when she realized what she’d been doing. She flushed scarlet and peeked up through her hair to see he was still looking at her; to avoid his stare her eyes roamed over the rest of his body. He was wearing a tank top so she could see his large, muscly arms; they were covered in tattoos. She was so busy looking at his tattoos she didn’t notice that he’d been moving towards her, so when he spoke to her, she jumped.
“Hi.” He said smiling, holding out his hand “I’m Matt, what’s your name?”
“I’m, uh, Maddie” she replied, trying not to be distracted by his eyes and shaking his outstretched hand.
“I haven’t seen you in here before, where are you from?” he asked.
“I just moved here from Ohio actually, starting a new life” I chuckled.
“Ah well I think you’re going to like it here. I’ve lived in Orange County all my life, it’s perfect. What do you do for a living?”
“Well in Ohio I worked in a shop, boring I know, but I was planning on doing something different here. What about you?”
“I’m in a band actually”
“Oh cool,” She said interestedly “ I love your tattoos by the way”
He laughed; the sound was deep and sexy.
“I did see you looking.” They continued talking for what seemed like hours, about his tattoos and his band and life in Huntington. He was 25, and his band was quite popular from what she could make out- although she was sure he was being modest and downplaying its success. Every few minutes she had to force her eyes away from his to try again not to get caught up in his stare, which sent her heart racing.
At about 11pm he said,
“ It’s getting late and I have to be up early tomorrow… so I should probably leave, but can I have your number?” She gave it to him, he said goodbye, and left. She turned back to face the bar, heart rate trying to slow to a normal place again. She just couldn’t get his eyes out of her head. After a few minutes, she left the bar and walked back to her apartment. She felt butterflies in her stomach. She felt endless possibilities as to where this new life could take her, and especially what could happen with Matt. In what felt like seconds she was back, so she went in and went straight to bed, it’d been a long day of travelling, but it’d been so worth it.
