Friends and Alibis
Chapter 26
So he wasn’t going to do anything. That’s okay. Really. But I still couldn’t sleep.
Currently my clock was reading 5.36am, Friday. And I had not slept at all. I had been tossing and turning for a good 8 hours. So I decided to get up and do something.
I dressed myself, grabbed my keys and went for my car. Once I was inside I made my way towards the beach. Since it was this early I really hoped that there would be nobody there. I wanted space. The walls of apartment made me feel anxious and I just needed to get out.
Once on the beach I took off my shoes and took in a deep breath. The water was calm and except for a few teenagers doing god knows what the beach was – as far as I could see – empty.
I turned around and went back to a dryer place so I could sit down. A little bit down I could hear a group of girls laughing to themselves. I smiled slightly to myself – until I saw who it was.
“Oh girls, look who we have here,” she snarled.
“Leave me alone, Amelia. Don’t you have a wedding to get ready for?” I asked, trying to sound bored (and not bothered).
“But that’s exactly what I’m doing,” she answered and her friends laughed. “It’s my hen night.” She fluttered her lashes at me.
Of course, I thought. “Well, then I won’t bother you any longer,” I stood up and grabbed my stuff but before I could step away she grabbed my arm.
“I know what you two did,” she hissed. “And I’m not happy about it. But he’s not going to leave me, so you can try as much as you want. It’s. Never. Going. To. Happen.”
I nodded. “I know,” I answered. “Good luck.”
I turned around and left her looking confused. Apparently she wanted to start a fight again. But I had lost already, so I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of riling me up.
I was halfway on the way to my car when suddenly my phone rang. I frowned at it and saw that it was Matt.
“Why are you calling me at,” I looked at my phone screen, “6.20 in the morning?”
“Listen, it’s important,” he sounded frantic and I immediately perked up, “he’s blowing off the wedding. We don’t know what happened. We were just busy with his stag night when we lost him for a bit and when he came back he announced that he wouldn’t marry her. You really fucking did it.”
I just stood and gaped and couldn’t believe it.
“Thank you, Matt,” I laughed into the phone and hung up.
Letting out a breathy laugh I looked up and saw that Amelia and her horde weren’t too far away. I debated on whether I should tell her or if I should leave it to Zack. But I had already decided.
“Hey Amelia,” I yelled.
“What?” she sneered.
“I really hope the wedding turns out the way you wanted it to!” I smiled. “I’m sure you deserve every moment of it!”
She just looked confused and turned away from me. I was happy. I couldn’t believe that he had actually said he would blow it off. He could still change his mind but that was not like the Zack I knew.
He had actually done it.
