Life's Little Miracles

Urgent

The phone rang, waking me up. I groaned, before rolling over looking at the clock. It was 8:30. Kay
and I had planned on sleeping in today. So much for that. I pulled the phone up to my ear, grumbling
a low, "Hello."

"Mr. Baker?" I heard a woman say from the other end. I pushed myself up on the pillows. I knew it
was either the Doctor's office or the Hospital. I just knew something was wrong.

"Yes?" I stated, more of a question.

"Mr. Baker, this is Sarah, from Dr. Masterson's office. He has ordered me to call you into the hospital
as soon as possible." I gulped hard. I knew something was wrong. I had just had a few tests done a
few days earlier. Maybe it was good news. I tried to keep my thoughts on the better side.

"Do you know why he wants to see me so soon?" I asked.

"I'm sorry. That information will have to come straight from your doctor." I sighed.

"I'll be right there."

I reached over placing the phone back on it's base before turning back to Kay. She was away. She

looked up at me with a smile.

"Everything is going to be ok, baby." She stated. I leaned down and placed a kiss on her forehead,
before throwing the blankets back and heading for the bathroom.

I stood in front of the mirror, looking at the frail person staring back at me. I was trembling. Not
because I was cold, but terrified. I wasn't sure why they needed me so sudden. Was it spread? Can
they not do anything, anymore? Was I going to die? I dropped my head, trying not to cry, as I felt the
tears, tingling my eyes and the huge knot, burning the back of my throat. What would Kay do without
me? I thought. I couldn't hold the tears back any longer. I slumped down on the cold tile of the floor,
resting my back against the cabinets.

"Zack?" I looked up to see Kay standing in the doorway. She had pain in her eyes. The same pain she
had when we found out. I sobbed.

"I can't do this anymore." She made her way over next to me, getting down on her knees to hold me.

"You have to hang on, baby. You have to fight." I could hear the tears, breaking her voice, which was
breaking my heart. She was trying to be strong for the both of us. "You can't just give up."

I knew I had to live. I wasn't sure what was going on at the Hospital or why they needed me there.
Part of me didn't care. That was the moment that i had given up trying. I didn't want any more
Chemo. No more Radiation. If I was going to die then so be it. I didn't want to suffer anymore.

"I just can't." I cried into her chest. "I don't want to do this anymore. Whatever this is, whether it's
good or bad. I don't want the treatment anymore. It's making me worse than it is better, it seems."
She pulled back and looked at me.

I could see the hurt in her eyes. The agony that we've both been dealing with suddenly dumped off
on her. It was a look of worry and doubt, yet, there was something else in there. I could see the
understanding. She knew i was tired. She nodded.

"Okay." she pulled me close to her. "No more." I sighed.

I was scared to death, but I was completely sure this is what I wanted. and I would let Dr. Masterson
know that, first thing when we went in. I was done with treatment.

________

We made our way into the Hospital and over the the front desk, where we were greeted by a black
haired nurse that I had never seen before. She smiled. I returned the favor.

"Can I help you?" Kay smiled.

"We're here to see Dr. Masterson, he said it was urgent."

"Are you Zack Baker?" I nodded. She picked up a file from the basket sitting next to her computer.

"Come this way." She stated, leading us around the corner and down to room 7.

It was room 7. This had to be good news. We stepped inside and I took a seat in the chair, Kay
following in the one beside me. She reached over and took my hand, locking fingers with mine. I
looked at her with a nervous smile.

"Dr. Masterson will be in here shortly." The nurse stated before, closing the door.

"Everything is going to be fine."

There it was again. That feeling that everything was actually going to be okay. I hated that she could
do that. Take me away from reality and make me forget that I was actually.. dying. Instead of being
an ass and arguing with her about the no sugar coated fact that I was in fact sick with cancer, I
smiled.

"I know." I stated, pulling her hand up to my lips, kissing it softly.

We heard a brief knock at the door, before it opened and Dr. Masterson's face appeared.

"Hey, kids." He stated, walking into the room, closing the door behind him. I don't understand why he
calls everyone kids. At the rate I was going I looked at least 20 years older than he actually was.
"How is everything, Zack?" I smirked.

"I don't know. You tell me, Doc." I suddenly remembered that I needed to tell him about the decision
that we had made earlier. "There is something I want to talk to you about." I stated.

"Well shoot. I'm all ears." I looked over at Kay for that not of approval. She surrendered. I looked
back at the doctor.

"I don't want anymore treatment." I stated, in a serious tone. He looked at me blankly.

"There's no sense in giving up, now, Zack. We're almost there."

"It's just not something I want anymore. Is it not my right to choose what goes into my body or
whether I want to whither away to nothing?" He shook his head.

"It is your choice, and If you're sure you don't want anymore treatment then we will stop it." I thought
about it for a moment. Going over everything in my head.

"I'm sure." He shook his head making some markings and writing on my chart, before looking back
over at me.

"The reason I brought you in here today, is.. I looked at your test results and by the measurments we
got from the scan, It looks like the Chemo that you have had, has shrunk the mass enough that it can
safely be removed." I sat up in my seat.

"So you're saying that you can get this out of me?"

"Well, there's not written guarantee that we can get it all until we get in there and start looking
around and seeing what we have to work with, but it we do remove is successfully, you wll go into
remission and won't need the Chemo anymore anyway." I smiled.

"So, when can we do this?"

"I've set you up with the O.R. for today. How does that sound? Is that too soon?" I shook my head.

"No. That's absolutely fine. I'm ready to get this over with."

"Good deal." he stated, marking more stuff on my file, before closing it. "I'll go tell them to get ready
and have you moved down there." I stood, shaking his hand before he left the room.

I looked over at Kay. She was crying. I knew they were happy tears though. There was a possibility
that I was going to be okay. A possibility that all this was gong to be over. That I could live a normal
life again. There was also the possibility that it could turn out the complete opposite.

"I love you." I stated, pulling her into a hug. "I love you, so much"

"I love you, too." I heard her mumble against my shoulder. I pulled back looking at her, brushing a
piece of hair behind her ear.

"You told me everything was going to be ok." She smiled.

"It will be."
