Life's Little Miracles

It's a girl

"Daddy, come here." I heard her call me from the kitchen. I walked into the door way, she was
sitting at the table, decorating cookies. I couldn't help but laugh. She was covered in flour.

"I made you a cookie, Daddy." she smiled, running over to me, handing me a heart shaped cookie.
"Just for you, Daddy." I reached down, picking her up, holding her close to me.

"That's so sweet of you, honey. Give Daddy a bite." I stated. She held the cookie up as I took a bite
from it. "That's really good, baby. Thank you." I smiled.

"You should make Mommy one too, don't you think?" She nodded with a wide smile. I kissed her
temple, taking the rest of it from her, before putting her back down.

I watched her make her way back over to the table, grabbing another heart shaped cookie, then
looking back at me. "Come help me, Daddy. It can be from me and you."

I smiled, making my way over to the table sitting down next to her. She handed me a jar of pink
sparkling sugar. "You put that on." I did what I was told, and sprinkled the sugar all over the heart
shape.

"That's pretty, Daddy. Mommy is gonna like this cookie."

"You think so?" I asked.

"Mm hmm." she said, licking some frosting off her finger. "Want some?" she asked, sticking her finger
out to me with a dab of red frosting on the end. I leaned forward to take it when she smeared it all
over my lips, laughing.

"You look like you're wearing lipstick, Daddy. That makes you pretty." I laughed, grabbing her up from
the chair, kissing her cheek, smearing the icing all over her face.

"Now, look who's pretty." I stated. She looked at me with that vibrant smile that I loved so much

"Daddy. I'm always pretty."

The weeks seem to fly by as my health steadily seemed to decline. I was staying more tired lately
and I was getting weaker by the day. My mom had arranged a small baby shower for Kay this
weekend. I figured I should have fun while I could. I was scheduled for another round of chemo the
following morning; right after Kay's 20 week check up. We were finally going to find out what we
were getting. I wanted a girl so bad.

I could just see it, in my mind. She would be a 'Daddy's girl', in her little dresses, with Kay's smile,
with my personality. I couldn't ask for anything more than that. Then I suddenly remembered that I
was sick. It's funny how the good things sort of block that out and when you finally come back to
reality, it hits you like a ton of bricks.

"Honey, you ready to go?" I heard her say, walking into the living room. I looked over to her and
smiled. She saw right through me. "Baby? Are you thinking about stuff again? She snaked her arms
around my shoulders, kissing my cheek.

"Yeah. I was just thinking about later on. Like when the baby is older and what not." I smiled through
my fear. That very familiar fear that I couldn't seem to get rid of. That fear that rode in the back of
my mind every single day. That fear that my thoughts and dreams would never become reality.

"What were you thinking about, baby?" I sighed, turning to her.

"You two were in the kitchen, and she was about 4 or 5 I'm guessing."

"She?" she questioned. I smiled.

"Yes. You were making cookies with her. She had decorated one for me. It was heart shaped, and it
was 'Just for me'." She smiled, running her hand over my cheek.

"That's so cute, sweetie." I smiled again.

"I hope that's how it goes for real." I stated, noticing what time it was. "If we're going to make it to
that Dr's appointment we had better get going." I smiled, leaning over kissing her forehead, taking
her hand. "Let's go find out if we're buying pink paint, or blue."

I felt her lips crash against mine. It was a feeling, that if the worst happened, I was surely going to
miss.

"Let's go, daddy." she said, pulling my hand to help me up off the couch. I smiled, getting up and
walking with her to the car.

------

After the Doctor's visit, we went to get something to eat. I had absolutely no clue what to order.
Everything on the menu made me want to vomit. I was becoming impossible to order for. I wasn't
long before I decided to go with a salad. Who doesn't like salad, right?

On our way home, Kay made her way to the parking lot of the baby store. Since we knew what we
were getting now, it definitely made it easier to look for things. Sadly we didn't really have time to
look for anything. I hadn't realized we had spent so much time at the restaurant. We were running
late. I looked at my watch.

"Come on, baby. We need to go. We're running late." I said, watching her make a pouty face. I
smiled. "Don't do that. We will have plenty of time to come back and shop for things." I took her
hand. "Right now, we have to get to that party where we can tell everyone the news."

She smiled as she leaned over and kissed my lips softly, then laid her head on my shoulder. "I can't
wait to tell everyone." she said. I kissed her forehead.

"Neither can I."

It wasn't long before we found ourselves pulling up to Brian's house. I unbuckled my seat belt and
reached for the door.

"Zack." I heard her say my name. I looked in her direction. She smiled, before taking my hand into
hers.

"I love you." She stated. I smiled, leaning over to her, kissing her gently.

"I love you, too". I said as I pulled away. "Come on." I opened the car door, climbing out. I waited for
her by the car, as she made her way around to my side of the car. She reached down, lacing her
fingers with mine, before leading me toward the house.

The door flung open, before we even got the chance to ring the doorbell. Michelle stepped out, taking
Kay into a hug.

"Look at you!" she said, referring to the large bump that had formed over the past few weeks. Even I
couldn't believe how much her belly had grown in such a short amount of time. "Zack." She took me
into a hug. "How are you" I smiled.

"I'm doing as good as I possibly can." She smiled, rubbing my shoulder in a friendly gesture.

"Brian's in here. Come on in, guys." She stepped aside allowing us to enter the foyer.

I looked up to see Brian coming down the stairs, holding Pinkly. She looked like she was struggling to
get away. I watched as he walked over putting her behind a doggy gate, that devided the Living room
from the kitchen, before turning to me.

"How you doin', man?" he asked, walking over to me. I nodded.

"I'm doing alright, bro." I stated, before making my way over to the couch to sit next to Kay. I
watched as Brian took the opposite couch across from us. He breathed in, the let out a long sigh.

"Well, What is it? He asked. I looked at Kay, to see her reaction on whether to tell him or not. I knew
she wanted to wait til everyone got there. She looked at me and smiled. For a second I was thinking
she was going to tell them.

"We're waiting til everyone gets here." she stated. "We want you all to find out together. I reached
down and laced my fingers with hers. Brian put his hands up in a sign of surrender. I chuckled.

It wasn't long before everyone started filling the house. All the girls were greeting Kay and oogling
over her belly. I stood in the walk way of the dining room, watching everyone. I felt an arm snake
around my shoulder and looked up to see Arin standing there.

"You're looking good, bro." he stated. I smiled.

"I'm feeling good, man."

"Zack." I heard Kay yell my name from the living room. "Come on. It's time to reveal the big secret." I
smiled, then walked over next to her. I looked at everyone sitting in anticipation.

I realized at that moment I was the luckiest guy in the entire world. I had an amazing wife, amazing
friends that were supportive of every aspect that was taking place in my life at this point. For the first
time in a long time, I felt happy. I didn't dread my life being sick anymore. It was the most amazing
feeling in the world.

I looked over at Kay with a huge smile on her face. She looked back at me. "Tell them baby." she
demanded. I smiled looking back to everyone.

"It's a girl."
