Our So Called Lives

Windows & Ladders

Amber's eyes snapped open and as she went to sit up she immediately laid back down. Oww that hurts. Amber thought as she laid there on her bed. The day before came flooding back to her.

Today is not going to be a good day. Amber mumbled to herself as she looked at the clock to find that it was four o'clock in the morning.

She then heard a knock on the window. Looking at the window, Amber debated on getting up to inspect what is making the noise. After a few seconds, Amber decided to see what it is that is knocking on her window. Slowly, she got off the bed, hissing as she did so. Every step Amber took towards the window, pain ran through her body. When she finally reached the window, she looked outside to find that Zack was the culprit behind the knocking on her window.

Opening the window, Amber poked her head out and asked, "Zack what are you doing here?"

"I came here to talk to you." Zack replied.

"At four in the morning?" Amber raised an eyebrow.

"Yup. So am I coming up there or are you coming down here?" Zack whispered.

"How can you come up here?" She whispered back.

"Easy." Zack then started to climb the ladder that happened to be right there. As he reached the top, Zack then continued by saying, "Like this."

Amber laughed as quietly as she could and then asked, "Zack what do you need to talk to me about?"

"Can I actually come in? I'm not to sure about staying on this ladder for this conversation." Zack replied as he looked down. "That would be a big fall and I for one do not want to fall."

Amber nodded as she moved aside to let him in. She then walked the best she could without showing any pain to her bed. As she sat on her bed she looked at Zack. "Ok Zack, what is it?"

Zack walked to the bed and sat next to her. "I wanted to talk about yesterday."

"Ok. What about it?"

"Matt said when you came back to the field, you were crying. You ok?"

Sighing, Amber ran her hand through her hair. "Honestly Zack, I'm Fine. That place just brings back memories."

Zack looked at her skeptically. "You sure? If somethings wrong, you can tell me."

Should I? Wait what would I tell him, Amber thought.

Zack saw a tear fall from Amber's cheek and wiped it away.

"Can we leave it as just painful memories?" Amber whispered.

Zack pulled her into his embrace. "Yeah we can. Just know if something is wrong you can tell me or the guys or girls."

Amber nodded her head.

"You know we are your friends and we do care." Zack reassured.

"I know. It's just weird for me since I've never really had any friends besides my sister." Amber admitted.

Zack let out an 'oh' and thought for a second before asking, "Who was that guy?"

"He was someone, who I thought was my friend and dated my sister. I introduced them to each other. When she died, he showed his true colors. Well I mean I don't doubt he cared about my sister, but obviously didn't see me as a friend just a pawn to get what he wanted." Amber explained.

"Oh...and the girl? You said you broke her nose? she said she had a restraining order against you because of it? Is she the reason you got expelled?" Zack rambled off.

Taking a deep breathe, Amber pulled away from Zack. " I guess I'm going to be revealing some things I didn't want to say."

"Sorry you don't have to.." Zack started to say, but Amber interrupted him, "Its okay. I'm going to have to say it sometime."

She wiped away the rest of the tears and continued. "The girl is the typical popular rich girl. She gets what she wants no matter what. Her and basically or I should say almost the whole school picked on me. My sister always stood up for me. That guy did stand up for me, but it was because of my sister."

Seeing where it was going, Zack said "You don't have to continue."

"Its fine Zack. I should explain. Besides you guys are my friends, you should know something about me. Right?" Amber

Zack chuckled quietly, "Yeah you are quite mysterious Ambs."

Amber smiled. "Yeah I guess so." She laughed quietly and carried on with the story. "Anyways back to what I was saying. When my sister died...well everyone blamed me or commented that I should have been me. I got tired of everything from school and home that I finally stood up for myself. I punched her in the face and broke her nose. Then I got expelled and really it seemed like they didn't want to expel me especially since it was the only fight I've ever really been in to where I actually hit someone, but of course her being the rich popular kid got her parents to make complaints. She also got other parents to complain and in the end got me expelled. The restraining order I didn't know about till yesterday at the game. Surprised me a bit."

"Wow. Your quite a rebel aren't you?" Zack teased.

"Ha. Ha." Amber said and stuck her tongue out at him.

"Hey if you are going to stick that out you might as well put it to use." Zack grinned.

Amber rolled her eyes and gave him a little shove. "Perv."

"That I cannot lie, but then again I like you so I can't help but flirt a little bit." Zack smirked.

"You call that flirting?" Amber raised her eyebrow.

"Just a little bit. Not much." Zack smiled and then noticed she didn't comment about him liking her.
"So you going to ignore the fact that I just confessed that I like you?"

Amber thought for a moment. "No I'm not ignoring. I just don't know what to say."

"Why do I get the feeling you already knew?" Zack questioned.

"Because you should know that they all tease the shit out of me with saying you like me and to be honest I didn't think they would be right." Amber answered.

"Why's that?"

Amber shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. Maybe because I'm not used to it since no one liked me at my other school."

"Those bastards are crazy." Zack paused, then asked. "Hey Ambs. Can I ask you a two questions?"

"Two questions?"

"Yup."

"Okay. What are they?"

"Well one at a time. First one is Do you like me?"

Amber bit her lip. She did like him. She figured that out last night when she came home. She just wasn't sure how to say it. "Way to put me in the spot Zack."

"Sorry. I just want to know before I ask the second question."

"Yes Zack I do like you."

"But?"

"There isn't a but."

"You sure?"

"Yes."

"Good. Now on to the next question. Will you go out on a date with me?"

Amber smiled and answered, "Yes."

"Awesome." Zack smiled and looked at the time. "Oh shit its 6am. I should get home."

"You probably should."

Zack went to the window and on the ladder. "Hey Ambs come here."

Once Amber got there, Zack gave her a kiss. "I'll pick you up around 4."

Amber nodded. "Okay I'll see you then."

Zack gave her one last kiss. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight"

Zack made his way down the ladder and snuck his way out of the yard.

Amber closed the window and laid back down. As her eyes closed, her lips turned into a smile as she slept.
