Our So Called Lives

Baseball

Amber sat and gazed out the window. Tears fell down her cheeks. What do I do? She thought as she closed her eyes.

All she could see was the anger in her uncle's eyes as he swung at her.

She couldn't sleep because when she did, she saw her uncle and thought brought fear to her. She sighed and got ready for school. She made sure that all bruises were covered.

I'm not going to say anything. Amber thought. I want to stay in Huntington Beach where I actually have friends.

Amber nodded her head at her decision and took a deep breathe before leaving the house for school.

Lunchtime at school came and Amber sat down with her friends.

"Oh! Guys next week we play Long Beach High." Zack said.

"Nice I love seeing us whoop their ass." Matt stated.

"So everyone in to go to the game?" Zack asked.

'Yeahs' were heard all around, except from Amber. Amber was silent since she heard who they were playing against. My old high school. She thought.

"Amber?" Zack

Jordan nudged her, which got Amber to snap out of it.

"Huh?" Amber

"You going?" Zack

"To the game?" Amber said. She continued after she saw Zack nod his head 'yes'. "I'm not sure."

"Aww your parents won't let you go?" Brian teased.

Amber looked at him. "I don't live with them. I live with my aunt and uncle, which I don't care if they will let me go or not."

"Sorry." Brian replied. "Why do you not wanna go?"

Should I tell them? Amber thought. No. I won't. I'll just tell them this, "Long Beach high is the school I got expelled from." Amber finished the last of her thought out loud.

Everyone's eyes were on Amber immediately after she said it.

When Amber took notice of everyone looking at her she asked, "What?"

Brian acted like he was cleaning out his ear and asked, "Did you say expelled?"

"Yeah." Amber answered.

"You got expelled?" Courtney questioned.

Amber nodded her head. "Yeah, why?"

"Your smart. I don't see why or even how you would get expelled." Matt explained.

The rest nodded in agreement.

"I'm not that smart." Amber mumbled.

"What did you get expelled for?" Brian asked.

"Does it have to do with your tattoo?" Zack posed.

"You have a tattoo?" Jimmy exclaimed. "Let me see!"

"I almost forgot you had one." Matt stated.

"How do you know she has one?" Brian inquired.

"Bitch ass Kennedy saw it and practically announced it to the whole class." Matt responded.

"Ah." Brian paused. "I want to see."

Amber took her gaze to her wrist and lifted up her jacket sleeve. She then held out her wrist for them all to see the tattoo.

"Annabelle Smith. June 14, 1981-1998." Brian read aloud.

"Whose Annabelle?" Jimmy asked.

Amber pulled her sleeve back down and replied, " She is..was my sister."

"Oh." Jimmy replied.

"Is that part of the reason why you got expelled?" Jordan asked.

"Not really. It has nothing to do with the tattoo itself. It's more like it kind of has to deal with..." Amber stopped. I don't want to say bullied. Hmm. Ah. I know. "It kind of has to deal with the accident that happened with my sister."

"What do you mean kind of?" Brian questioned..

"Accident?" Stephanie piped in.

"What happened to your sister?" Jimmy asked.

After seeing how uncomfortable Amber was, Val said. "Guys leave her alone. She doesn't want to talk about it."

Amber mouthed 'Thank You' to Val. Val smiled in acknowledgment of what she said.

"Okay. Anyways. Will you at least think about going to the game?" Zack asked.

"I'll think about it." Amber answered.
