Chapter two

Brian's POV

It was 7.55PM. I told her I'd be over at 8, and I didn't want to seem to eager, so I hung around in my car on her driveway. I knew Sadie would be asking me all sorts of questions about her mom and I. She'd give me the whole, 'what are your intentions?' speech and quite frankly I wouldn't know how to answer. We've only been dating for a month, and in all honesty I'm not sure what my intentions are. For example, I've always wanted a kid and I don't have to be a doctor to work out that's probably not gonna be possible with her soon. She's told me she doesn't want to be married again after her previous disaster with Sadie's father. So if I'm asked that dreaded question, I can't tell her own daughter I just want some fun with an experienced woman. But, maybe that is the case.

Time passed in the car listening to Iron Maiden, it was now 8.04PM. I was excited to get to know Sadie, I'd maybe find out some stuff about her mom that would make me feel better about being with her and it could make my intentions clearer. I waited for Sadie to open her door, but she wasn't showing any signs that she was even home. I looked up to her upstairs windows where a few lights were turned on, so I knocked harder. Eventually, after a few minutes pondering whether to just take off, I saw her silhouette rush down the stairs and she finally opened up.

"Oh-" she stammered. "Y-you're here?" she had black leggings on with bright pink fluffy socks to keep her feet warm against the cold floorboards. She had a giant Scorpion's t shirt on which could easily pass for a dress, and her hair, today, was down, it reached as far as the bottom of her breasts, and it looked like her mom's natural hair. Slightly wavy, a few strands of hair sticking out or curling in random places. She looked embarrassed that I had seen her looking the way she did, but for some reason it made me smile. Sadie had warm chestnut colour hair and pastel white skin with rouged cheeks, making her full pink lips stand out. I was in a complete daze.

"Yeah, promised Aggie-" I stuttered. "-you're mom"

"I didn't think you was actually coming" she half smiled. "Well, please come in" she opened the door wider allowing me to get through with my box of tools. I walked straight into her lounge and noticed the walls were posted with record covers, she had a few Anthrax albums, Black Sabbath, Maiden- her mother never mentioned we'd have this in common. Below the covered walls, there was a bookcase full of records. She'd clearly been collecting for sometime. There was everything from metal to punk, there was some 80's pop and even duplicate copies of certain ones. Next to the bookcase, there was a Gibson Les Paul standard stood leaning against her wall, in my head I prayed these weren't belonging to her crazy ex boyfriend. As I admired her collection, she walked over next to me appreciating the same shelf as I was. She was stood close, close enough I could smell the coconut in her hair. I felt strange, my stomach was turning and dropping. Alluringly, she would blink her eyes from time to time, allowing her eyelashes to flutter like the wings of a butterfly. And again, I was in a daze.

"Your mom never told me we'd have so much in common," I chuckled.

"I work in a record store in town" she spoke, pushing some sleeves back so they were all in line. "I'm surprised she hasn't, she has a box of business cards she gives everyone when they come over"

"No, no she didn't" I admitted. "She didn't tell me you were into this music" I pulled out 'Master of Puppets' by Metallica to show her what I meant.

"She's told you my hideous past but she hasn't told you the good things about me," she joked. It made me think she hadn't told me because it was likely I'd get on with her daughter more than Agnes herself.

"I had this when I was 16," I pulled out a rare 'Maiden Japan' picture disc. "Holy shit!" I laughed as I inspected the record, it brought back so many memories. "I used to listen to this before band practice every Wednesday night- it just got me going, y'know?"

"That's the good thing about working in a record store, you get first dibs" she grinned. "If there's any you've been after or used to have, let me know- you'd be surprised the rarity's I get" her smile faded and she sighed deeply. "Anyway, I'll show you the holes. I really appreciate you doing this" She lead me upstairs and into her bedroom. Her room smelt like freshly washed clothes, or bedding, and the candles burning smelt like blossoms. She had a cabinet full of horror memorabilia, and another one next to it featuring wrestling memorabilia. I looked at the walls she was facing, there were 4 giant holes all spaced apart. "Basically, I need this sorting before I can think about putting the house for sale" she sighed. Her mother told me what happened. About her ex boyfriend, what he did, his temper- and seeing the giant gaping holes made it obvious what a dangerous guy he really was. After what her mom told me, and meeting her, and seeing her today- it kinda filled me with anger how he could waste such a sweet woman.

I began my work on the solid punching bag. She made me a drink as I fixed them for her. She also put on the Metallica album I pulled out earlier. We spent an hour talking about music while I mended her walls. I told her I played in a band, which embarrassingly she'd never heard of. However, after I told her briefly about us, she replied, 'oh with the guy in the Fozzy song!' which I suppose, is better than not hearing of us at all. I must say, it was remarkably nice talking to such a nice girl about music without her frantically fan-girling about me or the band.

"I must ask though," she sighed. "What the hell are you doing with my mom?" we both chuckled, until I realised I had to answer her.

"I-" I began. I put my tools down onto the towel, and sat next to her on the edge of the bed, drinking some of my coffee. "Well, your mom's really great"

"I'm sorry if I'm way out of order saying this, but you're such an odd couple. How did it even come about?" she asked, tapping her fingers to the drum beat of Leper Messiah.

"I just met her in a bar. We were both a little drunk. It just went from there" I admitted. I carried on telling her the story of how we got together, but as I thought hard, I realised I was more into the woman sat next to me than I was my girlfriend. Me and Agnes never had a conversation about music, or my career, yet Sadie she was so willing to learn about me. I've never had that before. I briefly looked into Sadie's eyes, she cringed listening to me talk about her mother, yet she still wanted to learn everything. As much as she didn't want to hear it. I couldn't help but think of how much she deserved a good guy. I can't imagine any guy has come over after work to help her repair drywall before. And she just seemed to love having my company, she loved talking to me, even if it was about her mom.

"As long as you make her happy, and she makes you happy" she shrugged. "That's the most important thing." I definitely made her happy, she just smiles constantly whenever I'm around her. For me, talking to Sadie about music is the happiest I've been in forever. I looked to her again, her mood had seemed to droop at the talk of happiness. The dimples in her cheeks had disappeared and her hair fell into her face. Her emotions were not easily hidden on her innocent face. Her pain was evident in the crease of her lovely brow and the down-curve of her full lips.

Without even thinking, I tucked the strand away. I realise I over stepped the mark, but she didn't react. "You okay?"

"Yeah," she shook her head as if to shake the mood away. "I guess everyone's just so happy around me it's- it doesn't matter, I don't even know why I'm talking to you about this"

"I won't tell your mom, if that's what you're worried about? I know she can be- over protective with that stuff" I replied in a concerned manner, I had the belief that she hadn't had chance to express her feelings about the past before, I felt she trusted me.

"Really, I don't need any advice or anything- I've had plenty of it" she moved away from me. "Thank you though"

I gave her a nod, and finished repairing her walls. After I had finished, she offered me money, which I obviously refused. She looked somewhat disappointed I was leaving, even I didn't want too. I could have sat and spoken to her for hours, like two teenagers in a bedroom again. But I had to put her and tonight behind me. I couldn't think 'what if'. I was with Agnes. Her mother.
